Keep sermon audio consistent by building a clean, dedicated stream mix; setting gain from the microphone outward; balancing speech, music, and transitions; and monitoring the actual OBS output. Use compression to control routine variation and a limiter only to catch peaks. Test and record a representative service before relying on the setup for a nonstop broadcast.
Why the pastor can sound quiet online when the room sounds fine
The room mix and the livestream mix serve different listening environments. A room microphone may capture reverberation and audience sound rather than a clear, close sermon feed. Room speakers can also make an in-person voice feel present even when the signal sent to the stream is weak.
Where the church console allows it, send a dedicated mix or matrix output to the streaming computer. Build that feed for viewers: keep the sermon intelligible at ordinary listening volume, and make sure worship music, transitions, and other sources do not jump unexpectedly above it. The exact routing depends on the mixer and software; it is a production choice, not a YouTube requirement. Yamaha’s livestreaming guide also treats livestream audio as a production mix rather than simply a room sound pickup.
Set gain from the microphone to OBS
- Start with the source. Ask the preacher to speak at normal volume and at the strongest level expected during the service. Set the microphone preamp or console input gain so the strongest speech stays clean.
- Check each stage in order. Follow the signal through the mixer output, interface input, operating-system audio path if used, and OBS source. Confirm that each stage receives a healthy, undistorted signal before adjusting the next.
- Watch the OBS input indicator. OBS recommends checking levels at the device and again in OBS. Lowering only the OBS fader cannot repair clipping that has already occurred at the microphone preamp, console, or interface.
- Record and listen back. Make a recording of a normal session and listen before going live. Check for distortion, changes in microphone level, room noise, and differences between speech and music. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide for its monitoring guidance.
OBS describes an alignment level of -20 dBFS and a permitted maximum meter level of -9 dBFS. These are OBS meter conventions, with headroom intended for peak behavior; they are not instructions that every sermon must average -20 dBFS or peak at -9 dBFS. In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the maximum representable level, so a signal pushed above it can clip and distort. OBS’s meter documentation explains the meter’s behavior and limits.

Balance preaching, worship music, and transitions
Set repeatable fader positions for the sources used in the stream, and write them down for volunteers. Check each microphone and service segment: a guest microphone, a lectern mic, and a handheld may not deliver the same level even when their faders match. Keep speech easy to follow without making music or transitions startlingly loud.
- Listen to the stream mix on headphones, not only to the sanctuary sound.
- Check quiet speech as well as emphatic preaching; the loudest moment is not the only test.
- Compare sources by listening as well as by meter. Different sounds can seem differently loud even when their meter readings look similar.
- Do not expect a limiter to make a distant or poorly gained microphone sound like a well-positioned one; aggressive processing can bring up room noise and change the voice.
OBS’s audio guide cautions that source type and perceived loudness matter when balancing levels. The goal is intelligibility and a controlled, natural mix—not identical meter readings for speech and music.

Use a compressor and limiter for different jobs
Compression for ordinary level variation
A compressor can reduce the difference between softer and louder speech. Use it gently: too much compression can make preaching sound unnatural, cause the level to pump, or raise room noise during quiet passages.
Limiting for brief peaks
A limiter is peak protection, not a substitute for good gain staging or a balanced mix. In OBS, place the limiter last in the relevant filter chain. OBS describes its limiter as a special compressor with a fast attack and high ratio, and says it should be the last filter. Its documented default threshold is -6 dB; that is a software default, not a universal target for every church. Listen to the processed output and adjust based on the actual signal. See the OBS Limiter Filter guide.

What OBS audio levels should you aim for?
Use the OBS meter to spot peaks and possible overload, but do not treat it as a complete loudness measurement. OBS documents a peak-program indication and a separate RMS-style indicator that responds more like loudness. The meter has limitations as a loudness meter, so combine it with careful listening; if you need a formal loudness measurement, use a meter suited to that objective.
There is no established universal YouTube live-sermon LUFS target in the sources cited here. Do not treat “-14 LUFS” as a YouTube live requirement. EBU R 128 Supplement 2, version 3, published 21 November 2023, discusses loudness leveling for streaming, while AES TD1008 gives recommendations for internet streaming and on-demand audio. Those are useful engineering context, not proof of a fixed YouTube live target. A church may set its own measured production goal, but should label it as a local standard and verify it by listening.

YouTube offers viewer options including Stable volume and Voice boost, which can affect perceived playback for some viewers. They are not a reliable substitute for a well-mixed source. See YouTube’s explanation of video and audio quality enhancements.
Test the complete stream before service
- Run an unlisted or otherwise suitable test using the actual microphones, music, operators, encoder, and internet connection.
- Include quiet speech, the strongest expected preaching, worship music, and transitions. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream; its encoder settings guidance covers stream setup.
- Listen through headphones at the source and through OBS monitoring. Check that the source is clean and that the outgoing mix remains intelligible.
- Record the test and listen back on typical devices available to you, such as a phone speaker, headphones, or television. OBS recommends recording and listening back before going live.
- Document device selection, gain positions, filter order, and settings. Keep a short preflight checklist so a volunteer change or restart does not silently alter the stream mix.
Monitor a nonstop broadcast and protect the archive
Assign someone to monitor the outgoing audio and video and watch stream-health indicators during transmission. Keep a local recording as a backup, and verify that the file is growing and usable while the stream runs. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend continuous monitoring and checking the local archive.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an on-demand archive matters, do not assume a nonstop broadcast will be preserved: divide the broadcast into suitable sessions or use a verified local recording and editing workflow. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Troubleshoot uneven sermon audio
| What you hear or see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The pastor is quiet online, though the room sounds fine | The stream feed may be relying on a room mic or may not have a dedicated speech mix. | Check the console routing and build a stream mix that prioritizes clear speech. Verify the feed at the interface and in OBS. |
| The voice distorts even after lowering the OBS fader | Clipping may have happened earlier in the signal path. | Check microphone/preamp gain, console output, and interface input in order. Lower the level at the stage that is clipping. |
| Music or transitions suddenly overpower speech | Sources may have inconsistent fader positions or different perceived loudness. | Set and document repeatable stream-mix levels; listen to each source in context instead of matching meter readings alone. |
| Quiet passages sound noisy or the voice pumps | Compression may be too strong or may be raising room noise. | Reduce compression and retest quiet speech and strong preaching. Use a limiter for brief peaks rather than heavy compression for every variation. |
| The stream seems fine live, but the archive is missing or incomplete | A long stream may not be captured by YouTube, or the local recording may not have been verified. | For broadcasts beyond 12 hours, plan separate sessions or a local archive. Check that a local recording file is growing and usable during the event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
The workflow above is for producing a live sermon mix from your church’s audio setup. If your nonstop YouTube channel instead needs to play uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start with StreamNeo’s free day.
