For reliable captions on a 24/7 YouTube kirtan stream, send captions through a supported live-caption feed or embed EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the encoder. YouTube’s English automatic captions can be a fallback for eligible streams at normal latency, but they are not guaranteed to handle sung lyrics accurately or remain on the finished recording. Plan live captions and archive captions as separate tasks.
Choose a live caption method
YouTube documents three practical routes: its built-in automatic captions for eligible streams, captions embedded in the encoded stream, or a caption feed delivered through a signed ingestion URL. The right choice depends on the language and accuracy needed, whether a caption source is available continuously, and whether normal latency and a broadcast delay suit the channel.

Set up captions sent with the stream
Embed captions in the encoder
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s Setup settings and enable Closed captions.
- Select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder and caption source to send EIA 608 or CEA 708 caption data in the stream. The exact encoder controls depend on the encoder and caption workflow; confirm that captions are actually being sent, not merely that the YouTube option is selected.
- Test the live output in YouTube with the intended caption track before relying on the continuous broadcast.
YouTube currently supports one caption track. If the channel needs multiple languages, do not assume that one live entry point can carry separate simultaneous tracks through this method.

- Enable captions for the live event in YouTube Live Control Room and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to a captioner or supported captioning software configured to deliver captions to YouTube.
- Keep the system clock accurate, as YouTube recommends, and verify synchronization in the live output.
- For an event workflow, YouTube instructs creators to add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. Confirm whether that delay fits the particular continuous-stream setup before using it.
YouTube’s live-caption documentation lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS version 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (version 5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net. These are examples listed by YouTube, not a guarantee that every listed tool, version, or service is suitable for continuous sung kirtan captioning. YouTube also maintains a third-party tools and services directory; its inclusion of a provider does not establish that provider’s language coverage, lyric accuracy, or 24/7 availability.

Use automatic captions only with realistic expectations
YouTube’s live automatic-caption instructions describe gradual availability for eligible English channels streaming at normal latency when professional captions are unavailable. Captions must be enabled for each stream; the setting is not a channel-wide default. In YouTube Live Control Room, open Go live, choose Stream, turn on Closed captions, select Automatic captions, and choose the video language. The documented live option is English-only. Check YouTube’s current automatic captioning guidance for current eligibility and availability, which may change.
Kirtan is sung, so speech recognition may struggle with the music, lyrics in a non-English language, overlapping voices, or the mix of instruments and vocals. That is an inference from YouTube’s general limitations, not a kirtan-specific accuracy result: the cited guidance does not establish how accurately automatic captions recognize sung devotional lyrics. YouTube warns that “Automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise.” Poor sound, long silence, complex or lengthy audio, and unsupported languages can also affect results.

Test the actual sound before depending on captions
- Check a representative passage in the language and style used on the channel, including vocals, instruments, overlapping singers, and the actual broadcast mix.
- Review whether captions appear, stay synchronized, and communicate the words clearly enough for the intended audience.
- If lyrics need to be dependable, use prepared or human-reviewed captions delivered through an appropriate live workflow rather than assuming automatic captions will be correct.
- Plan for coverage across the full schedule. A method that works for a short test does not by itself establish continuous caption coverage for a 24/7 stream.
Handle the recording separately
Live captions and captions on the video after the broadcast are separate operational tasks. YouTube says live automatic captions will not remain on the finished video; it may generate new captions through its VOD process, and those may differ from the live captions.

YouTube does not recommend transcript auto-sync for videos over an hour or with poor audio. A full-day recording is well beyond that duration, so do not assume that pasting a transcript for the entire stream into auto-sync is an appropriate workflow. Check YouTube’s current subtitles and captions instructions; if managing the archive in sections, treat that as an editorial choice, not a YouTube requirement.

Check the accessibility goal
WCAG 2.0 success criterion 1.2.4 states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media. (Level AA)” This is a general accessibility benchmark, not a determination of the legal obligations that apply to a particular channel or jurisdiction. The criterion is in the W3C’s WCAG 2.0, dated December 11, 2008.
