You can run recorded CAT preparation classes as a continuous YouTube Live feed by connecting a looping video source to an encoder and the encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. Before going live, verify the channel, test the stream, clear rights for every recording and embedded asset, and choose whether uninterrupted viewing or reliable YouTube replays matters more: YouTube may not archive a stream longer than 12 hours.
Before you build the stream
- YouTube channel: It must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Recorded classes and rights: Confirm you have permission to rebroadcast each class and every included slide, clip, music track, or other third-party work. Buying or possessing a recording does not itself establish rebroadcast rights.
- Encoder: Use a software or hardware encoder that can play your recordings in a sequence and loop them. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance does not endorse a specific looping application; check that your chosen one supports playlist looping and the recovery behavior you need.
- Reliable source and connection: The computer or device running a local encoder and its internet connection must remain available for the DIY method. Test the actual upload connection at the intended output settings.
- Archive plan: Decide in advance whether a continuous destination or complete individual replays are more important. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Prepare the class playlist
Arrange lessons for a viewer who joins midstream
Order recordings deliberately—for example, by CAT section, topic, or a clearly labeled revision sequence—rather than assuming viewers will arrive at the beginning. A short slate or on-screen schedule can identify the lesson currently playing and what comes next. That is an editorial choice, not a YouTube requirement.
Check picture and sound
Review representative recordings before adding them. Make speech intelligible and levels reasonably consistent between classes; check that video orientation, slides, and any embedded material appear as intended. Keep a separate local copy if preserving the recordings or making a backup archive matters.
Choose an output the connection can sustain
Set the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate to suit the source and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s published guidance lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps; that is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can maintain it. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). Check the appropriate bitrate for your chosen format and output in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Set up the YouTube Live connection
- Enable live streaming and check eligibility. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming setup flow and complete channel verification if required. Confirm there are no active restrictions that prevent streaming; initial activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live in Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and chat options. Make the title clear that this is a CAT preparation stream and describe the lesson rotation accurately.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The key is a credential: keep it private, do not show it in screenshots or a public screen share, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Select encoder settings. Use a YouTube-supported video and audio format, CBR, and the recommended two-second keyframe interval. Choose the bitrate for your actual resolution and frame rate, not a generic number. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion.
- Load and test the playlist. Use a representative class with similar audio and video to the intended broadcast. Confirm the encoder is playing the correct sequence and can loop it; verify the audio, picture, and overlays in Live Control Room preview before making the event public.
- Start the broadcast. Start the encoder feed and use Live Control Room to start the event when the preview is ready. Check the public viewer page in a separate browser or device so you know what viewers actually see.
- Monitor it while live. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and check for audio dropouts, frozen video, or an unexpected end. Verify any local recording by opening the resulting file; do not assume a backup is usable just because recording was enabled. Choose continuous viewing or dependable replays

The 12-hour distinction is about archive and DVR behavior, not a promise that a shorter event will always produce a complete replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Clear copyright and Content ID before launch
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If its system detects third-party content, the stream may be replaced by a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID.

- Check rights for slides, screenshots, music, film or news clips, and any other material embedded in the recording.
- If a licensor uses Content ID, ask whether it must allowlist your channel before the broadcast.
- Do not treat a successful private test as proof of copyright clearance; it cannot establish that you have the necessary rights.

Troubleshoot common failures
- You cannot start a live stream: Check verification, whether live streaming is enabled, and whether the channel has a current live restriction. If you have just enabled live access, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Live Control Room shows no preview: Confirm the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are entered correctly, and the selected output format and bitrate are supported. Recheck the preview before starting the public event.
- The feed buffers or stream health degrades: Lower the output bitrate or resolution to a setting the sustained upload connection can support, then test again. A published bitrate recommendation does not mean the local network can reliably deliver that rate.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced: Check YouTube notifications and the stream page for a copyright or Content ID issue. Review rights for the entire recording and seek channel allowlisting from the rights owner when applicable.
- A long broadcast has no complete replay or rewind: This can be expected for an event beyond 12 hours. Use shorter broadcasts when YouTube replays matter and keep a local recording for backup.
- The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly: Check the encoder’s playlist order, loop setting, file availability, and any configured stop behavior. Confirm the application supports the continuous playback and recovery you expect; YouTube’s setup documentation does not guarantee those encoder features.
