There is no single router setting that reliably doubles 5GHz Wi-Fi speed. The most useful place to start is the 5GHz channel and channel-width configuration: leave both on Auto unless you have evidence of local congestion, then test one change at a time. Whether a change helps depends on the router, Wi-Fi client, signal at its location, and broadband connection.
Which router setting should you try first?
Start with the 5GHz band’s channel set to Auto and channel width set to Auto or the router’s option to use all supported widths. Auto lets the router select settings based on its capabilities and environment; a manually chosen channel or the widest fixed width is not automatically faster.

Intel recommends Auto channel width for its 802.11ax-capable client adapters, with the access point determining width. It also advises leaving the router channel on Auto unless you can assess which channel is least congested. Apple similarly recommends Auto for channel selection and Auto or all widths on 5GHz. These are compatibility-oriented recommendations, not a guarantee that every router interface uses identical options.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

If your router offers a width setting, Auto is a sensible baseline; test a fixed width only if your router and client support it and you can compare performance in your actual use location. Intel’s recommended 802.11ax settings and Apple’s Wi-Fi router recommendations describe these trade-offs.

How to test a channel or width change
- Record a baseline. Use the same device in the same location and run the same speed test more than once. Note the results and whether you experience dropouts or slow loading.
- Open your router’s wireless settings. The exact menu name varies by manufacturer; look for the 5GHz band’s channel and channel-width controls. Keep a note of the original values so you can restore them.
- Change one setting only. If Auto is already enabled and you have evidence that nearby networks crowd a particular channel, try a less-congested channel your router offers. Otherwise, leave channel selection on Auto. Do not change channel and width together, because you will not know which change affected the result.
- Reconnect and repeat the test. Keep the device, location, test method, and approximate network conditions as similar as possible. Compare speed and stability, not just the best single result.
- Keep the change only if it helps consistently. If performance worsens or becomes less stable, restore the original setting or Auto and test a different factor.
Intel’s guide to Wi-Fi channels and channel widths discusses configuration choices, but selecting a manual channel is useful only when you can identify a less-congested option. A speed test measures the end-to-end connection, not just the wireless channel.
When to try a non-DFS channel
DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection) channels can give a router more channel choices, but equipment using them must scan for radar and may change channels if radar is detected. Intel suggests trying a non-DFS 5GHz channel as a diagnostic if DFS use is associated with Wi-Fi drops or an access point that does not appear. The available channels and behavior depend on your country and equipment, so use the options shown by your router rather than relying on a universal channel list.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If switching away from DFS resolves the problem, stability may improve even if a speed test does not show a higher peak rate. D-Link’s router configuration manual describes radar scanning and channel changes; Intel’s channel guide lists drops and an unseen access point as reasons to try a non-DFS channel.

What can limit 5GHz speed besides the channel?
- Distance and walls: 5GHz can offer faster throughput and more channels with less congestion than 2.4GHz, but its range is shorter and walls or other obstacles weaken it more. A client far from the router may therefore perform worse on 5GHz.
- Client capability: A router setting cannot make a phone, laptop, or Wi-Fi adapter support a channel width or wireless mode it does not have. For 802.11ax features, Intel says the access point and client both need compatible support.
- Broadband service and household load: The internet plan, router, number of connected devices, and other network activity can all constrain a speed test. A faster wireless link cannot exceed a slower internet connection when testing internet throughput.
- Placement and extenders: A weak signal at the device’s location may be the real issue. Ofcom notes that extenders can affect speed and responsiveness, so diagnose placement and the connection path before assuming a router purchase will help.
Microsoft’s home-layout guidance explains the range and obstacle trade-off between 5GHz and 2.4GHz. Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance covers device capabilities, connected-device load, and extenders as possible factors in slow performance.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
When is an equipment upgrade worth considering?
Consider an upgrade only after checking whether your current router and client support the wireless features you need and whether the problem persists with a strong signal and a suitable channel. A Wi-Fi 6 access point can provide 802.11ax benefits only when the client also supports them. New hardware will not by itself fix a slow broadband plan, crowded local airwaves, or a weak signal caused by distance and obstacles.
