The Applitools MCP Server lets an AI assistant help configure and author some Eyes visual tests, investigate existing results, and resolve checkpoint changes—but setup and checkpoint-authoring tools are currently limited to Playwright TypeScript/JavaScript Fixtures. Inspection, review, and resolution can work with existing Eyes results from other supported SDKs. Treat differences as evidence to investigate, not automatic permission to update a baseline.
What the Applitools MCP Server does
The server connects an MCP-capable assistant to Applitools Eyes workflows. Applitools describes it as helping users “create, update, review, and resolve visual tests using Applitools Eyes across any of our supported SDKs.” The breadth of that description has an important boundary: the documented project setup and checkpoint insertion tools are for Playwright TypeScript/JavaScript Fixtures, while result inspection and resolution can operate on existing Eyes data from supported SDKs. See the Applitools MCP Server documentation.

Eyes captures screenshots during a test and compares them with stored baselines for the test state and environment. A difference is a review item: it might be an intended redesign, a defect, or a dynamic element such as a timestamp. The MCP workflow can gather evidence to help decide; it does not make every visual change safe to accept. Applitools’ Eyes overview describes the visual-testing system and baseline comparison.

Check whether the tools fit your project
- Runtime and client: the documented requirements include Node.js 18 or newer and an MCP-capable assistant or client.
- New setup or checkpoint authoring:
eyes_setup_project,eyes_setup_ufg, andeyes_add_checkpoints_to_testare documented for Playwright TypeScript/JavaScript Fixtures and require access to the project source. - Existing-result investigation: inspection, review, and resolution tools can work with existing Eyes batches, sessions, and DOM data produced by supported SDKs, regardless of the source language.
- DOM investigation: DOM-based inspection depends on DOM capture having been enabled during the test run. For example, session inspection may return no data when the relevant run did not capture DOM.
- Credentials: your credential policy must allow the relevant read or write access. Read-only investigation can be separated from baseline-changing operations.
Install and connect the server
Applitools recommends using its VS Code or Cursor extensions. It also documents a manual MCP connection using a stdio server launched with npx --yes @applitools/mcp@latest. Client setup screens and configuration formats can change, so use the current connection instructions for the assistant you have chosen rather than copying a configuration intended for another client.

For a manual connection, configure the MCP client to launch that command as a stdio server, then provide the credentials needed for the operation. Node.js 18 or newer is required. Confirm that the client can see the Applitools tools before asking it to modify project files or inspect results.
Choose keys by operation
Applitools separates execution credentials from result access and mutation permissions. Do not assume that an execution API key grants the read or write access the MCP task needs.

Capture checkpoints, then investigate differences
Set up or add checkpoints where supported
For a Playwright TypeScript/JavaScript Fixtures project, ask the assistant to use the setup tools to configure the project or UFG, or to add checkpoints to a test. The setup and checkpoint tools need source-code access, so review proposed edits as code changes and run the tests through your normal process. Use current Playwright, Node.js, and Playwright JavaScript Fixtures SDK versions as Applitools documentation recommends.

For other supported SDKs, the MCP server can still help investigate existing Eyes results, but the documented setup and checkpoint insertion tools do not establish that it can author tests in those projects. Keep test execution and screenshot capture in the project’s existing supported SDK workflow.
Ask a focused, read-only question first
Start with the smallest scope that matches the issue: batch, scenario, session, or step. Example prompts include:

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- “Review my last batch and tell me what changed.”
- “Just show me what changed in this batch, don’t resolve anything yet.”
- “Is this diff on the timestamp element dynamic, or a real change?”
Inspection can expose sessions and batch statistics, DOM differences, searches within the DOM, active match regions, and a node’s history across runs. Review can gather evidence such as images, DOM differences, and history. Use the image and available DOM/history evidence together: a recurring change in a dynamic node may suggest a volatile element, while a one-off or broad visual difference may warrant checking the product change and test state before deciding.
Resolve only after the evidence supports a decision
Resolution tools can accept or reject checkpoints and add, remove, or update match regions. Review can run in inspect or resolve mode, but review itself does not commit a baseline. Applitools states that saving or resetting a baseline is a separate request: ask separately for eyes_resolve_save or eyes_resolve_reset, and each still requires explicit approval. A prompt such as “Reset this batch’s baseline to what it originally ran against” should therefore be treated as a consequential reset request—not as an ordinary request to summarize differences.

- The assistant cannot find the Applitools tools: check that the MCP client is configured to launch the server, that Node.js 18 or newer is available to that client process, and that the selected extension or manual stdio setup follows the current client-specific instructions.
- A tool reports a missing key: provide the key for the operation. Test execution uses
APPLITOOLS_API_KEY; inspection/review needAPPLITOOLS_READ_KEY; resolution and resolve-mode review needAPPLITOOLS_WRITE_KEY. - Setup or checkpoint authoring does not fit the repository: the documented tools are limited to Playwright TypeScript/JavaScript Fixtures and require source access. Use the repository’s supported SDK workflow for authoring, while using MCP to inspect existing Eyes results where supported.
- Session or DOM evidence is missing: DOM-based inspection depends on capture being enabled for that test run. A tool cannot recover DOM data that was not captured; use the available image/result evidence or enable DOM capture in a subsequent run.
- A review reports a difference but you are unsure whether to accept it: inspect the screenshot, relevant DOM difference, match regions, and history before changing a baseline. Ask for a read-only explanation first if the cause is uncertain.
- A baseline did not change after review: that is expected. Review is separate from save/reset; request the appropriate resolution action and provide explicit approval when ready.
Or skip the browser setup: use ScreenshotNeo for standalone screenshots
Applitools MCP is for Eyes visual-test workflows; if you need a clean website screenshot returned by an API instead, ScreenshotNeo offers a single GET request. This does not replace Eyes baselines or its review and resolution workflow. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free without a card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000.

Can the Applitools MCP Server inspect tests written in languages other than JavaScript?
It can inspect and review existing Eyes results from supported SDKs; the documented setup and checkpoint-authoring tools are the narrower Playwright TypeScript/JavaScript Fixtures scope.
Does reviewing a batch automatically update its baseline?
No. Saving or resetting is a separate resolution request and requires explicit approval.
