Keep adjustable dumbbells clean and follow the care instructions for your exact model. If a BowFlex SelectTech selector will not turn, first make sure the handle is fully seated in its cradle and the selector is aligned with a setting—not caught between settings. Never force the dial or take apart the handle or base; stop using the dumbbell if its plates may not be locked.
Routine care for adjustable dumbbells
Care instructions vary by brand and model, so check the owner’s manual before cleaning or lubricating your dumbbells. BowFlex’s BD1090i manual recommends wiping a soiled handle assembly, plates, or base with a cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a small amount of mild soap, then drying with a separate cloth. It warns against solvents, harsh detergents, chemicals, and bleach. Read the BowFlex BD1090i owner manual.

That BowFlex manual says the internal mechanism is lubricated and generally does not need additional lubrication. If lubrication is considered necessary where plates contact the selection discs, it specifies silicone lubricant, preferably food grade. This is not a remedy for a stuck selector and is not universal advice for other brands; do not spray lubricant into a handle or apply it to an unspecified mechanism.

Safe first checks for a stuck BowFlex SelectTech selector
These checks apply to BowFlex SelectTech guidance, not every adjustable dumbbell. Consult the manual for your own model, and keep the checks non-invasive. Do not twist hard, pry at plates, or lift a dumbbell if you are unsure the plates are secured.
- Seat the handle. For the cited BowFlex SelectTech troubleshooting guidance, check that the handle is fully depressed into the base before trying to turn the knob.
- Align the selector with a setting. Turn each adjustment knob to the desired number and allow it to settle into its notch with a click. BowFlex warns that a knob left between settings can lock and prevent the handle from being removed. Read the BowFlex SelectTech FAQ.
- Inspect the base and plate arrangement without forcing anything. BowFlex troubleshooting guidance identifies backward or misplaced plates and dirt, debris, or another obstruction in the base as possible causes. Check only as described in the manual for your specific model, and return any inspected plates to their correct positions. A third-party Sportsmith SelectTech troubleshooting article also describes handle and plate checks; use your manufacturer’s manual to verify the procedure.
If the selector still will not move with ordinary adjustment, or the plates do not appear locked, stop using the dumbbell and contact the manufacturer or retailer. These checks do not identify every possible cause or failure.

When to stop and arrange service
The BowFlex BD1090i manual describes a locking-mechanism functional test and directs owners to repeat it monthly. If the mechanism operates unsatisfactorily, the manual says to stop using the product until approved service is available and to contact the retailer or BowFlex. It also describes a locking test after parts replacement, before returning to exercise use. Follow the exact test in your model’s manual rather than improvising one.

The same manual states: “Do not attempt to disassemble the dumbbell handle or base assembly. These items are not designed to be user serviced.” Suspected internal faults should go to manufacturer-authorized service, not a home repair attempt. Consult the BD1090i manual or your model’s equivalent documentation.

Why the exact model matters
Adjustable dumbbells use different selector designs and have model-specific care and service instructions. A procedure documented for BowFlex SelectTech should not be assumed to apply to another brand or even every SelectTech model. Identify the make and model from the equipment and use its manual or official support channel before changing cleaners, lubricant, or troubleshooting steps.
