How to Maintain a Swimming Pool When You Can’t Get Your Usual Supplies

When usual pool supplies are unavailable, testing, circulation, and debris removal can help—but they do not replace sanitizer. Here’s how to manage the wait safely.

If you can’t get your usual pool supplies, test the water before making changes, keep filtration and circulation running, and remove visible debris. Those steps help, but they do not disinfect the pool: if you cannot confirm that the water has an appropriate sanitizer level, keep swimmers out until it is corrected. Use a product labeled for your pool system and follow its directions and local requirements.

What to do first when pool supplies run short

  1. Keep swimmers out if you cannot verify safe disinfection, if circulation has stopped, or if the water is contaminated or its condition is unknown. Clear-looking water and a familiar smell are not substitutes for testing.
  2. Test chlorine and pH with a pool test kit and follow the kit instructions. A DPD kit is more accurate than strips, according to the CDC. Do not add chemicals based on a guess or an unverified reading.
  3. Keep filtration and recirculation operating according to the equipment maker’s instructions. If the pump or circulation system fails, leave the pool closed to swimmers until it is working again.
  4. Remove debris by skimming leaves and brushing accessible surfaces with pool-appropriate equipment. Empty baskets as appropriate for your system.
  5. Reduce contamination by asking swimmers to shower first, avoid swallowing pool water, and stay out if they have diarrhea.
  6. Get a compatible, labeled product from a reputable pool supplier or qualified service professional. The right choice depends on your existing sanitizer, pool volume, test results, stabilizer level, and product label.

Test the water and use the right targets

The CDC recommends that residential pool owners test chlorine and pH at least twice a day, and more often when the pool is heavily used. It recommends a pH of 7.0–7.8 and at least 1 ppm chlorine for pools. For pools using cyanuric acid stabilizer—including those using common dichlor or trichlor products—the CDC recommends at least 2 ppm chlorine. These are general CDC recommendations; product instructions and applicable local rules still matter. CDC: Home pool and hot tub water treatment and testing

Check both measurements before adjusting the water. The CDC says a DPD kit is the most accurate way to measure chlorine and pH, while test strips are less accurate. Follow the directions supplied with the test kit. A chlorine level above 10 ppm can bleach out some tests and produce a falsely low or zero reading, so do not respond to a suspicious result by blindly adding more chemicals.

pH affects how well chlorine works: higher pH reduces its ability to kill germs, particularly above 8.0, while very low pH can increase corrosion risk. A chlorine reading alone does not establish that every pathogen has been eliminated. For example, the CDC lists an approximate 15,300-minute (10.6-day) chlorine kill time for Cryptosporidium at 1 ppm free chlorine, pH 7.5, and 77°F (25°C), in pool water without cyanuric acid; it says disinfection times are longer when cyanuric acid is present. Those conditions are specific, and the figure is not a reason to treat a pool as safe based on one measurement. CDC: Home pool and hot tub water treatment and testing

What helps while you wait—and what does not

Keep the water moving and clean

Skimming debris, brushing pool surfaces, and maintaining filtration and recirculation support pool maintenance. They do not replace a sanitizer. CDC public-pool guidance discusses cleaning and operating filtration and recirculation, but its public-facility requirements are not automatically residential-pool rules. For a home pool, follow your equipment maker’s directions and applicable local guidance. CDC: Operating public pools

Limit what swimmers add to the water

Sweat, dirt, urine, and fecal matter consume chlorine and can contribute to illness risk. Ask swimmers to shower before entering, avoid swallowing water, and stay out when sick with diarrhea. These habits reduce contamination; they do not make an inadequately disinfected pool safe. CDC: Preventing diarrheal illnesses

Do not mistake a clear pool for a disinfected pool

Physical cleaning can make the water look better without correcting its sanitizer level. The CDC says residential owners are responsible for regularly checking chlorine concentration and pH to help protect swimmers from illness. If you cannot measure or restore suitable disinfection, keep the pool closed.

Can you use household bleach instead of pool chlorine?

There is no universal bleach substitution or safe dose for every pool. Household bleach and pool products can differ in concentration, additives, labeling, and directions; the CDC’s residential guidance does not provide a general household-bleach dosing recipe for pools. Only consider a sodium-hypochlorite product if its label expressly permits the intended pool use, and only when you know the pool’s volume and current chemistry. If any of that is uncertain, ask a qualified pool professional or local authority rather than improvising.

Never mix chlorine products with acid or other chemicals. Keep products in their original containers, secured from children and pets, and use the protective equipment specified on the label. CDC: Pool chemical safety

Why other sanitizers are not simple replacements

Do not switch a pool to hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide, or PHMB as a quick substitute for chlorine. The CDC’s 2024 Model Aquatic Health Code technical annex says hydrogen peroxide and chlorine dioxide are not EPA-registered for recreational-water disinfection in the discussion reviewed, and describes important operational limitations for PHMB. This technical guidance is not a homeowner conversion recipe. CDC: Annex to the Model Aquatic Health Code

PHMB is incompatible with chlorine or bromine and requires a separate oxidizer. The annex warns that adding 3 ppm chlorine to a properly maintained PHMB pool can cause PHMB to precipitate as a sticky mass on pool surfaces and in the filter. If your pool already uses PHMB or another system you do not recognize, do not add chlorine or change products without checking the system’s label and getting qualified advice. If you have a saltwater pool

A saltwater chlorinator generates chlorine in the pool water by passing salt through an electrolytic cell; the pool is not chlorine-free. Continue testing free chlorine and maintaining the system. A separate chlorinating product may still be needed for shock treatment or remediation, and it must be compatible with the system and used according to its label. CDC: Annex to the Model Aquatic Health Code

When to call for help

Contact a qualified pool professional or local health department if you cannot restore sanitizer readings, the water is cloudy or contaminated, you are unsure which sanitizer system the pool uses, chemicals may have been mixed, or circulation equipment has failed. For public or shared pools, follow the operator and jurisdiction’s requirements; residential guidance is not a substitute for those rules. CDC: Operating public pools CDC: Pool chemical safety
