Maintain a first-generation Honda NSX by following the owner’s manual for its exact model year and market, performing each service at the mileage or time limit that arrives first, and documenting every job. The priorities are a verified timing-belt and water-pump history, frequent oil and coolant checks, age-related cooling-system inspection, brake and fluid service, and a careful review of belts, hoses, steering, suspension, tires, driveshaft boots, fuel lines, exhaust and the underbody. An NSX with missing records should receive a documented baseline inspection from a technician who regularly works on these cars.
Start with the exact car, not a generic NSX schedule
The classic NSX covered here is the first-generation car commonly identified as NA1 or NA2. Honda and Acura sold different model years, markets, engines and transmissions, so an interval from one owner’s manual cannot automatically be applied to every car. Find the vehicle identification number, model year, transmission type and original market before choosing a schedule or ordering parts.

Honda’s manuals state that maintenance is due at the indicated mileage or time, whichever comes first. That rule matters on a low-mileage collector car: fluids, rubber parts and seals age while the odometer barely moves. Use the manual issued for the car, then record the date, mileage, work performed and parts used in a service log.

- Photograph the odometer, VIN plate, engine-bay labels and any maintenance stickers.
- Collect invoices, inspection reports and timing-belt labels; treat an undated verbal claim as unverified.
- Ask a specialist to inspect for leaks, corrosion, damaged wiring, previous accident repairs, non-original components and overdue fluids.
- Set a known starting date and mileage for every service item that cannot be proven. Do not assume a part was replaced merely because the car runs normally.
The documented maintenance intervals
The figures below are examples from American Honda Motor Co., Inc. owner’s manuals for U.S.-market cars. They are not a universal schedule for every first-generation NSX.

| Service | Published interval | Application and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | Every 3,750 miles (6,000 km) or six months | 2000 U.S. owner’s manual; use the first limit reached |
| Engine coolant | 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 10 years, then every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or five years | 2002 U.S. owner’s manual example |
| Manual-transmission fluid | 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or six years | 2002 U.S. owner’s manual example |
| Automatic-transmission fluid | 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or six years, then every 90,000 miles (144,000 km) or five years | 2002 U.S. owner’s manual example |
| Brake fluid | Every three years | 2002 U.S. owner’s manual example |
The 2000 manual also includes timing-belt replacement with water-pump inspection, engine-coolant and transmission-fluid service, brake-fluid replacement, and recurring brake and tire inspections. It does not make a generalized third-party interval a substitute for the schedule for your specific car.
Timing belt: verify the history before driving hard
A timing-belt service is a priority because a missing or unreliable record leaves the belt’s age and condition unknown. Honda’s schedules list belt replacement and water-pump inspection, but the correct interval must come from the applicable model-year manual and service information. If the car’s history cannot establish when the belt was replaced, have the work assessed and scheduled before treating the car as ready for long trips, high engine speed or track use.
A specialist supplier advertises a timing-belt and water-pump kit around 90,000 miles or six years. That is the supplier’s service guidance, not a universal Honda interval. A complete quote should state whether it includes the pump, gaskets, seals, idler or tensioner components, accessory belts, filters and the labor needed to inspect related parts.

Water-pump fitment needs verification
Science of Speed notes that 1991–96 NSXs used a pump with a short weep nipple and that a longer-nipple design appeared in 1997; early cars may already have been updated. This is a fitment note, not proof of what is installed on an individual car. Have a qualified parts source identify the fitted pump and cover by VIN, model year and part number before ordering a kit.
Checks at every fuel stop and routine visits
The 2000 U.S. manual tells owners to check engine oil and coolant at each fuel stop. Park on a level surface, allow the engine to cool when checking coolant, and look for a changing level rather than topping up indefinitely without finding the cause. A falling level, fresh residue, a sweet smell or visible wetness warrants diagnosis.

- Check the oil level and note sudden consumption or discoloration.
- Check the coolant reservoir and inspect nearby hoses, clamps and connections for staining or softness.
- Look beneath the car for new oil, coolant, brake-fluid or transmission-fluid drops.
- Confirm that warning lights, temperature readings and brake-pedal feel remain normal.
- Inspect tire pressure, tread condition and sidewalls before extended storage or driving.
At scheduled visits, inspect belts, cooling hoses and connections, fluid condition, brakes and brake lines, steering, suspension, driveshaft boots, exhaust, fuel lines, lights and the underbody. On a car more than two decades old, condition and documentation are more informative than mileage alone.
Cooling system and rubber parts
Cooling-system reliability deserves special attention because an old hose, clamp, radiator connection or belt can turn a routine drive into an overheating event. Replace coolant according to the exact manual; the 2002 U.S. schedule is 120,000 miles or 10 years initially, followed by 60,000 miles or five years. Do not extend that figure to another year or market without checking its manual.
What to inspect
- Upper and lower coolant hoses, smaller bypass and heater hoses, clamps and hard-line connections.
- Radiator, thermostat housing, water-pump area and signs of dried coolant.
- Drive belts for cracking, glazing, fraying or incorrect tension.
- Cooling fans, electrical connectors and evidence of previous overheating.
- Underbody panels and surrounding areas where a leak could remain hidden.
A secondary NSX guide flags coolant-hose deterioration as a recurring inspection lead. Treat that as a prompt to inspect the actual hose age and condition, not as a diagnosis based on reputation. A specialist should pressure-test the system when the level changes or a leak is suspected.
Fluids, brakes and tires
Engine and transmission fluids
Use the correct fluid specification in the vehicle’s manual and record the product, quantity and date. The 2002 U.S. schedule lists manual-transmission fluid at 120,000 miles or six years. For an automatic transmission, it lists 120,000 miles or six years initially, then 90,000 miles or five years. These are schedule examples for that manual, not a promise that an unknown fluid is healthy because it looks clean.
During a fluid service, inspect drain plugs, sealing washers, case joints and nearby wiring for leaks or damage. A transmission that is difficult to engage, noisy, or contaminated with metal needs diagnosis rather than a simple interval reset.

Brake fluid and brake hardware
The 2002 U.S. manual calls for brake-fluid replacement every three years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture with age, so a low-mileage car can still be overdue. Inspect the reservoir, master-cylinder area, hard lines, flexible hoses, calipers, pads, discs and parking-brake mechanism. A soft pedal, pulling, vibration, grinding or fluid loss is a fault requiring immediate attention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTires and wheels
Check pressure against the vehicle’s specification, not a number printed on a replacement tire. Inspect for cracking, bulges, uneven wear and damage from storage. Confirm that wheel fasteners are correctly tightened and investigate any vibration before highway use. Old tires can be unsafe even when tread depth appears generous.
Belts, valve clearance and engine inspections
The official schedules include belt inspection and instruct owners to have valve clearance checked and adjusted when the valves are noisy. Do not treat a quiet engine as proof that every clearance is correct, nor use an improvised adjustment interval from another Honda engine. A technician familiar with the NSX can listen for abnormal noise, check the applicable specifications and document any adjustment.
During engine-bay service, inspect vacuum lines, fuel lines, electrical connectors, grounds, intake plumbing and exhaust heat shielding. Look for brittle insulation, oil wetness, chafing and repairs that could fail under heat. Record compression or leak-down results only when a qualified shop performs a properly controlled test; do not infer engine health from one cold start.
Steering, suspension, driveshafts and underbody
Honda’s schedules call for recurring checks of steering, suspension, driveshaft boots, exhaust, fuel lines, lights and the underbody. Raise the car safely on approved lift points and inspect rather than relying on a visual glance from ground level.

- Check steering joints, rack boots and power-assist plumbing for play or leakage.
- Inspect control-arm bushes, ball joints, dampers, springs and mounting points for wear, cracking or corrosion.
- Look for split driveshaft boots and grease flung onto nearby components.
- Examine fuel lines, exhaust hangers, heat shields and underbody fasteners.
- Confirm that lighting, indicators, horn and warning systems operate correctly.
Any looseness, torn boot, leaking damper or damaged line should be itemized in the inspection report, with a recommendation based on safety and condition rather than age alone.
Known-issue lists are inspection prompts, not diagnoses
Secondary NSX guidance discusses several issues that may appear on individual cars: coolant-hose failure, early manual-transmission snap-ring concerns, climate-control electronics, window regulators and ABS faults. Their presence and severity depend on model year, equipment, previous repairs and actual condition.
Some 1991–92 manual cars are reported to fall within a snap-ring serial-number range, but the range was not established here from an official Honda bulletin. Ask an NSX specialist or an Acura/Honda service source to check the individual transmission and chassis history. Do not declare a campaign status from a forum list or assume every early car needs the same repair.
For climate controls, windows and ABS, test every function: operate each window repeatedly, run all climate modes and fan speeds, check ABS warning behavior during the start-up self-test and scan for stored faults with suitable equipment. A failed function is evidence to diagnose that car, not proof that the entire model has an inevitable defect.

Choosing a dealer, specialist or DIY approach
| Option | Best use | Questions to ask before authorizing work |
|---|---|---|
| Honda or Acura dealer | Access to factory systems, service information and parts channels | Who has current NSX experience, and will the quote identify exact model-year fitment? |
| Independent NSX specialist | Complex timing-belt work, diagnosis and cars with extensive modifications or incomplete history | How many first-generation NSXs does the shop service, and how will it verify updated components? |
| Competent DIY owner | Documented routine checks and straightforward fluid or inspection work when the correct tools and information are available | Do you have the year-correct manual, safe lifting equipment, torque data, fluid-handling equipment and a plan for unexpected parts? |
Compare providers on six practical points: NSX experience; access to correct service information; model-year, market, engine and transmission fitment; an itemized scope; part-number verification; and warranty and recordkeeping. For timing-belt work, ask specifically whether the water pump, seals, gaskets, accessory belts and any already-updated components are included. A lower initial quote can represent a narrower scope rather than a lower total cost.

There is no universal repair price for a classic NSX. Location, parts availability, corrosion, previous modifications, shop rates and the work discovered after disassembly all change the estimate. Request a current written estimate that separates labor, parts, machine work, fluids, taxes and recommended follow-up.
Finding parts when availability is uneven
Honda Heritage Works provides NSX parts-catalog material and a continuing-supply list, while warning that some parts have been discontinued. Catalog illustrations are not disassembly drawings, and an old catalog price should not be treated as a current price or proof of stock.
Before ordering, provide the dealer or parts specialist with the model, chassis number, exact part number and required quantity. Ask whether the part has supersessions or updated versions. For timing-belt kits, confirm every component against the car’s model year and fitted water-pump arrangement. A generic belt advertised for another Honda model is not evidence of NSX fitment.

- Identify the specification: record VIN, model year, market, transmission and major modifications.
- Establish safety: check tires, brakes, steering, suspension, fluid leaks, lights and warning systems before extended driving.
- Verify the major service: seek dated proof of timing-belt replacement and water-pump inspection; if absent, obtain a specialist assessment.
- Refresh age-sensitive fluids: compare oil, coolant, transmission fluid and brake-fluid dates with the correct manual.
- Inspect cooling and rubber: examine hoses, clamps, belts, boots, seals and fuel lines for deterioration.
- Test electrical equipment: operate windows, climate controls, lighting, gauges, ABS functions and charging systems.
- Inspect beneath the car: document corrosion, leaks, exhaust damage, underbody repairs and suspension wear.
- Create the new record: save invoices, part numbers, photographs, measured findings and the next due date.
This sequence separates immediate safety work from preventative maintenance and gives a future buyer evidence of what was actually done.
Adjusting for severe operating conditions
The 2000 U.S. manual directs owners to use the severe-conditions schedule when the car is mainly driven on short trips, in extreme heat, with extensive idling or stop-and-go traffic, in mountainous areas, or on muddy, dusty or de-iced roads. If the NSX sees those conditions, select the severe schedule in the year-correct manual rather than applying the normal schedule by habit.
Storage also creates work: maintain the battery according to safe storage practice, keep tires from sitting under-inflated, inspect for rodent damage and leaks before restarting, and recheck fluid levels and brake operation before a long drive. The exact storage procedure should match the owner’s manual and the equipment installed on the car.
Keep records that make the next decision easier
A useful record includes date, mileage, service description, fluid specification, part number, supplier, technician, findings and next due date. Attach photographs of removed parts and the timing-belt label when available. Note whether a recommendation was completed, deferred or declined, and why.
When parts are discontinued or superseded, retain the correspondence that identifies the replacement. This protects future fitment decisions and prevents repeated diagnostic work. It also lets a future owner distinguish a verified update from an assumption based on the car’s age.
