One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo lower GPU temperature, first check whether the card is actually exceeding its model-specific limits, then clean dust, improve airflow, and reduce unnecessary GPU workload. If temperatures remain high, a fan-curve adjustment, power limit, or carefully tested undervolt can help; persistent overheating may require professional service.
There is no single safe temperature for every GPU. Compare readings with the limits for your specific card and judge them under a consistent workload, taking noise, performance, and ambient temperature into account.
Check GPU temperature before changing settings
Record a baseline under a repeatable workload before making changes. Note the GPU core temperature and, if available, hotspot or junction and VRAM temperatures, along with utilization, clock speed, board power, fan speed, FPS, room temperature, and the game or application being tested. Repeat the same workload for a similar duration after each change; an idle reading alone does not show how the card behaves under sustained load.
Sensor availability varies by GPU, driver, firmware, laptop manufacturer, and monitoring software. Tools such as MSI Afterburner, GPU-Z, HWiNFO, AMD Software, NVIDIA App, and Intel graphics utilities may expose different readings on different systems. MSI documents Afterburner monitoring of GPU frequency, memory frequency, voltage, and temperature, and says its settings can be restored to default: MSI Afterburner support.

For supported NVIDIA systems, the command nvidia-smi -q -d TEMPERATURE displays current GPU temperature and temperature-related limits. NVIDIA documentation describes the command. NVIDIA FrameView can also log temperature, clocks, utilization, power, and FPS: FrameView user guide.
How hot is too hot?
Temperature limits vary by GPU model, so check the specifications for your particular card. NVIDIA says typical graphics-card temperatures are approximately 40–90°C, but workload, airflow, and dust affect readings; that range is not a universal target or a guarantee that every card should reach its upper end. See NVIDIA’s maximum-temperature guidance and its overheating guidance.
A sustained gaming or rendering temperature is not directly comparable to an idle reading. Room temperature matters, and core, hotspot, and VRAM sensors measure different parts of the card. Watch for falling clocks or performance during a sustained workload, repeated temperature-limit events, fans running near maximum, crashes, or visual artifacts. GPU Boost can adjust clocks and voltage in real time according to power and thermal conditions, so a warmer card is not automatically faulty: NVIDIA GPU Boost.
Seven ways to lower GPU temperature
1. Improve case airflow
The graphics card needs a steady supply of cool air and a way for hot air to leave the case. NVIDIA recommends a front-to-back airflow path, with front fans bringing air in and a rear fan exhausting warm air: NVIDIA overheating guidance.

- Shut down the PC and disconnect power before inspecting it.
- Check that front or bottom fans are configured as intake and rear or top fans as exhaust.
- Move cables or other obstructions away from the GPU’s air intake, and check whether the card has adequate clearance below it.
- If the case has little intake airflow, consider adding a suitable intake fan.
- Clean filters regularly and test with the side panel closed. You can briefly compare temperatures with the panel open; a substantial drop suggests case airflow may be restricted.
Do not assume that more fans will solve every problem. Compact cases, vertical GPU mounts, radiator placement, and a restricted cooler intake can all affect airflow. Permanent panel removal is not a preferred fix because it can increase dust and disrupt the case’s airflow path.

2. Clean dust from the GPU and case
Dust on heatsink fins, fans, and filters can restrict airflow. NVIDIA recommends checking and gently cleaning components because dust accumulation can inhibit cooling: NVIDIA overheating guidance.
- Power off and unplug the PC, then move it to a ventilated area.
- Remove dust from the GPU heatsink fins, GPU fans, case filters, and intake and exhaust areas using short bursts of compressed air.
- Hold fans still while cleaning so compressed air does not spin them freely at high speed.
- Avoid blowing dust deeper into the heatsink or into the power supply.
- Reassemble the PC and repeat the same workload used for your baseline.
Do not spray liquid cleaner inside the PC, use a household vacuum directly on sensitive components, or remove the GPU cooler for routine dusting. If cleaning does not help, a blocked or failed fan, poor heatsink contact, or worn thermal material may need attention.
3. Set a more effective fan curve
A fan curve that raises fan speed earlier can lower GPU core temperature under load, at the cost of additional noise. It will not fix a seriously restricted airflow path or a defective cooler. Do not copy a single fan curve as a universal setting: tune it for your card’s limits, noise, and sustained-load temperature.
On systems where Afterburner supports fan control, MSI documents this setup: open Settings, select the Fan tab, enable Enable user-defined software automatic fan control, adjust the curve, and click Apply. See MSI’s Afterburner support page.
- Start with the default behavior at low temperatures.
- Increase fan speed progressively around the temperatures you observe during sustained use.
- Compare the temperature reduction with the added noise, and watch for repeated fan ramping.
- Check that the setting persists after restarting the computer.
Some laptop fan controls are set by firmware, and a software curve may not be available or may be overridden. A more aggressive curve can also make a worn fan noisy or leave hotspot and VRAM temperatures high even if the core reading falls.

4. Cap FPS and reduce unnecessary rendering
If a game renders more frames than you need, a frame-rate cap can reduce GPU workload, power draw, heat, and fan noise. NVIDIA documents a Max Frame Rate control for limiting the maximum frame rate of a 3D application: NVIDIA Control Panel reference.
- Choose a frame rate appropriate for your display and the experience you want.
- Set a cap in the game first, or use a driver or GPU utility if the game lacks a suitable limiter.
- If needed, reduce especially demanding settings such as ray tracing, resolution scale, supersampling, shadows, volumetric effects, or anti-aliasing.
- Retest temperature, power, and frame-time consistency.
A cap helps most when the GPU is doing more work than necessary; it may not help much when an application is CPU-bound. A low cap may also affect responsiveness, so choose one that suits your use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Lower the GPU power limit
A lower power limit restricts how much power the GPU can draw. This generally reduces heat, but it can also reduce sustained clock speeds and performance. Make a modest change, retest, and keep it only if the temperature and noise benefits are worth the performance trade-off.
- Open the GPU’s supported tuning utility and find the power limit or power-tuning control.
- Reduce the limit gradually rather than applying an extreme change immediately.
- Run the same workload and compare temperature, board power, clocks, and FPS with your baseline.
- Restore the default if performance becomes unacceptable or the change causes instability.
NVIDIA Control Panel provides power-management modes that trade performance against power consumption and fan noise on supported systems: NVIDIA power-mode reference. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition also provides power-tuning controls: AMD performance features. A power limit will have little effect if the GPU is not drawing near its limit, and it will not repair obstructed airflow or a faulty cooler.
6. Undervolt the GPU
Undervolting reduces the voltage supplied to the GPU at a chosen operating point. It can reduce power and heat, sometimes with similar performance, but results vary by card and workload. An unstable setting can cause application or driver crashes, visual artifacts, or lost work, so test it carefully and keep a way to restore defaults. MSI describes the potential benefits and risks in its Afterburner undervolting guide.

- Install Afterburner from MSI’s official page or Guru3D; MSI warns that fake download sites exist.
- Record baseline temperature, voltage, clock, power, and FPS.
- Open the voltage/frequency curve editor by clicking its button or pressing Ctrl+F.
- Adjust a target voltage and frequency conservatively, then apply the setting.
- Test demanding games or applications and check for crashes, freezes, black screens, artifacts, or unstable clocks.
- If problems occur, use a slightly higher voltage or lower clock, or restore the default profile.
- Test across the workloads you actually use; a brief benchmark cannot prove long-term stability.
Reducing a power limit is a simpler alternative if you do not want to tune a voltage curve. Supported NVIDIA and AMD software also offer GPU tuning controls; availability varies by system. See NVIDIA App performance tuning and AMD Adrenalin performance features.
7. Service the cooler or seek manufacturer support
Consider professional service if temperatures have risen markedly from the card’s previous behavior, a fan has stopped or makes grinding noises, hotspot temperatures remain unusually high, or the GPU throttles despite clear airflow and clean filters. Possible causes include a failed fan, loose heatsink, poor mounting contact, or deteriorated thermal interface material.
Do not treat repasting as the first fix for every warm GPU. Opening a card can complicate warranty coverage, damage connectors, misalign thermal pads, or worsen heatsink contact. For a recently purchased card, contact the manufacturer or seller before opening it. Replacing thermal pads requires correctly specified materials and careful installation.
Laptop GPUs often share cooling hardware with the CPU and have fan behavior controlled by the manufacturer. Prioritize unobstructed vents, a hard surface, clean intake and exhaust areas, the manufacturer’s power or performance modes, and an FPS cap. A cooling pad helps only if it improves airflow for that particular laptop. If cleaning and sensible software changes do not help, seek manufacturer service for a failing fan or cooling system.

FAQ
Is 80°C too hot for a GPU?
Not necessarily. Limits vary by GPU model, and a sustained load reading should be compared with that card’s specifications, not a universal cutoff. Also consider hotspot and VRAM readings, ambient temperature, clock behavior, and whether performance is throttling.

Why is my GPU hot even when the case is clean?
Possible causes include restricted case airflow, hot air recirculating into the GPU, an ineffective fan curve, high GPU workload, a failing fan, or poor heatsink contact. Compare readings under the same workload and inspect clocks, power, and available temperature sensors.
Will a more aggressive fan curve damage my GPU?
A fan curve can lower temperature but increases noise and may add wear to the fans. Tune it gradually, listen for unusual fan noise, and avoid relying on it to compensate for blocked airflow or a failing cooler.
Is undervolting safe?
Undervolting is a reversible software adjustment, but an unstable setting can cause crashes, artifacts, or lost progress. Make changes conservatively, test with the applications you use, and keep a default profile available.
Should I open my GPU to replace thermal paste?
Not as a first step. Clean dust, improve airflow, and test power or fan settings first. Opening the card can affect warranty coverage or damage the card; contact the manufacturer or seller if it is under warranty or recently purchased.
