AWS Elemental MediaLive

How to Loop Pre-Recorded Videos in AWS Elemental MediaLive for YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To repeat a pre-recorded file in AWS Elemental MediaLive, set the input attachment’s Source end behavior to LOOP. MediaLive starts ingesting the file again from the beginning when it reaches the end. Then configure a separate RTMP output group with the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room; YouTube recommends using RTMPS where supported.

What you need before configuring the loop

  • A supported file input: MediaLive lists MP4 files with an .mp4 extension and TS files with a .ts or .m2ts extension as VOD inputs. See AWS MediaLive input types.
  • A MediaLive channel with the file input attached.
  • A YouTube live stream’s ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
  • An output profile compatible with both your MediaLive channel configuration and the YouTube event. Available MediaLive codecs and settings depend on the specific input and output configuration.

Set the MediaLive file to repeat

  1. In the MediaLive channel, open Input attachments and select the file input.
  2. Open the input’s general settings and set Source end behavior to LOOP.
  3. Save the channel configuration. When the file ends, MediaLive begins ingesting it again from its beginning. AWS documents this as an input end-behavior setting in the MediaLive User Guide.

Use this control for intentional file repetition. Input-loss handling is a different feature: it governs replacement frames or slate and delivery behavior when an input is lost, not replay after a file completes. See AWS input-loss behavior.

Configure the output for YouTube Live

  1. In the channel’s output configuration, add an RTMP output group. AWS explains the setup in Creating an RTMP output group.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the event. Enter the destination information in MediaLive’s output settings. AWS destination fields include protocol, address, port, application name, and stream name; credentials may be required for a destination. Consult AWS RTMP destination fields and YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  3. Choose the RTMPS URL when it is available and supported by your MediaLive destination configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Do not assume the default URL is the secure one; select the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and confirm the destination protocol and certificate settings are compatible. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to that destination.

Choose encoder settings for the actual profile

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. MediaLive does not necessarily offer every YouTube-listed codec in every channel configuration, so verify the available output fields for your specific channel before choosing a profile. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the matching row in YouTube’s current guidance rather than treating one number as universal. For example, YouTube’s H.264 table, checked on October 3, 2026, lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those specific H.264 profiles, not guaranteed requirements for every codec or configuration.

Choose the right end behavior for your schedule

Goal Input behavior Scheduling consequence
Repeat the same file continuously LOOP MediaLive restarts the file at its end. A following follow input will not take over because the looping input does not complete.
Play one file once, then let a follow input take over CONTINUE The file completes, allowing the channel’s applicable next-input behavior to proceed. AWS says a follow input cannot succeed after a current input set to LOOP.
Replay a static file later as part of a schedule Switch away from the file input, then switch back Re-selecting a static file starts ingestion from the beginning of the file or clipped section. This is scheduled re-selection, not continuous LOOP behavior.

For the follow-input constraint, see the MediaLive User Guide. For replay after switching away and back, see AWS’s file-input documentation.

Test and monitor before relying on the stream

  1. Start the channel and YouTube event using the intended output profile.
  2. Use a test segment with motion and audio similar to what you plan to stream. Confirm YouTube receives the picture and sound and that the stream health display reports an acceptable signal.
  3. Allow the file to reach its end and verify that the video begins again from the start. This checks the loop behavior separately from initial ingest.
  4. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room during operation and adjust the profile against YouTube’s current encoder guidance if the event reports an issue.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. The exact ingest URL, key, codec options, bitrate fields, and account controls can vary by event and configuration; confirm them in the current consoles.

Troubleshooting common problems

The file plays once and then stops

Check the input attachment’s Source end behavior. CONTINUE plays a file once; set it to LOOP when it should restart at end-of-file.

The next input never takes over

Check whether the current file input is set to LOOP. A looping input restarts at end-of-file, so it does not complete for a follow input. Use CONTINUE for the preceding source when the next input is meant to take over.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Verify the URL and stream key against the event in Live Control Room, check the RTMP destination fields and protocol, and confirm that the key has not been mistyped. If using RTMPS, ensure MediaLive’s destination protocol and certificate settings support the selected secure URL.

YouTube reports a format or stream-health issue

Compare the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance for that profile. Do not assume a codec listed by YouTube is available in every MediaLive configuration. Test with representative video and audio, then monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health status.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Looping changes how often the file is sent; it does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material in it. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules before scheduling a long-running broadcast. Repeated playback alone does not establish that content is original or authorized.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploaded quality is streamed as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
