The exact command depends on the replay’s codecs and your FFmpeg build, so test the file and preview the stream before going public. Also confirm that you have the rights needed to rebroadcast the replay and its audio.
Before you start: file, channel, and permissions
- A local replay video: FFmpeg needs a video file it can read. This guide does not cover exporting a replay from a particular Fortnite version; the export process and available formats can vary.
- YouTube Live access: First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Check access in YouTube Studio before scheduling a broadcast. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A compatible FFmpeg build: Available encoders and options vary by build. Check the documentation matching your installed version and test against the actual file. FFmpeg documentation.
- Rights to rebroadcast: Access to a replay does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights and permissions that apply to the tournament footage, game content, overlays, and any music or other audio in your particular file. The permissions for a specific replay are not established here.
Do not treat a stream key as public configuration. Anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s labels can change, so use the current Studio controls for your account.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s setup guidance says to enter these in the encoder’s output settings. YouTube encoder setup.
- Keep the key private. Avoid pasting it into a public post, screenshot, shared script, or repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your FFmpeg configuration.
- Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where supported by your setup. Confirm the exact server URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming that an address copied from another stream is current. YouTube recommended encoder settings.
Prepare the replay and choose how FFmpeg will send it
Inspect the actual input file
Do not assume every Fortnite replay export has the same container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, or frame rate. Those details determine whether FFmpeg can send the streams as-is, remux them, or must transcode them. The file-specific choice cannot be made without inspecting the input.
Use real-time pacing and indefinite input looping
FFmpeg supports file inputs, looping, and real-time pacing. The usual command shape is to set the input loop count to indefinite, pace file reading at real-time speed, then send an FLV output to YouTube’s RTMPS URL with the stream key. The order and exact spelling of options matter: input options belong before the relevant input, and output options belong with the output. Check the installed build’s help and documentation before adapting a command. FFmpeg command-line documentation and FFmpeg formats documentation.

- Darkfire Bundle: Including 3 outfits (with LEGO Styles) and back blings; Dark Power Chord, Dark Six String, Molten Omen, Molten Battle Shroud, Shadow Ark, Shadow Ark Wings, plus 3 wraps, 3 dual-wielding pickaxes, and an emote!
- Deep Freeze Bundle: Cool off with the Deep Freeze set and 1,000 V-Bucks. Includes the frostbite outfit (with LEGO Style), freezing point back bling, chill-axe pickaxe, and cold front glider.
- The Fortnite – Darkfire & Ice Bundle includes 10+ cosmetics and 1,000 V-Bucks!
No universal ready-to-run command is safe to prescribe without knowing the file’s codecs, installed FFmpeg version, and YouTube URL format presented to your account. In particular, do not blindly copy a command from another source: verify that its loop option is attached to the input and that the chosen output format and stream mapping work with your file.
Decide whether to copy or transcode
If the input streams already match the encoder profile you intend to send, stream copy or remuxing may avoid unnecessary quality loss and CPU work. If they do not match, choose a supported video and audio codec and transcode to the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. FFmpeg supports stream selection and processing options, but the correct mapping and codec settings depend on the file and the installed encoders. Test a representative segment before relying on a long broadcast.

Set YouTube ingest quality and network headroom
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, constant bitrate, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. RTMPS is recommended. Choose settings your source can support and your upload connection can sustain; higher resolution does not improve a lower-quality source. YouTube recommended encoder settings.
Recommended Free Tools
| Example H.264 profile | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Those two values are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated H.264 profiles, not universal targets for other codecs, resolutions, or frame rates. Consult YouTube’s full settings table for the profile you choose. YouTube advises keeping total outgoing bitrate within your upload capacity and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Account for all outgoing traffic on the connection, not only this stream. If the connection cannot reliably carry the selected bitrate with headroom, reduce the profile rather than relying on a setting that repeatedly overloads the upload path.
Test the stream before making it public
- Start FFmpeg with the stream configured as private or unlisted while you test, using the visibility controls available in Live Control Room.
- Wait for the correct stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that it is the intended channel and event.
- Check video, audio, motion, and stream health. Listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly repeated audio, and watch for freezes or dropped frames.
- Let it run long enough to verify that the loop returns to the beginning cleanly and that the output remains stable. A file ending and restarting can produce a visible or audible transition.
- Monitor upload capacity while testing. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring and upload headroom. If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate or profile and test again.
- Only switch to public when you have confirmed the content, permissions, preview, and stream health.

Choose DVR and understand long-stream behavior
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. For streams longer than 12 hours, rewind may be limited or unavailable. Separately, YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for longer broadcasts. Decide whether DVR and an archive matter for your channel, and check the relevant Live Control Room settings before starting. YouTube DVR and YouTube encoder stream setup.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm that the stream is live in Live Control Room, the server URL and key belong to that stream, the key has not been reset, and the FFmpeg output protocol and format match the encoder setup. |
| FFmpeg exits or reports an option or encoder error | Check option placement and spelling against the documentation or help for the installed build. Verify that the build includes the selected encoder and that FFmpeg can read the input file. |
| Video or audio is missing | Inspect the file’s actual streams and verify FFmpeg’s stream selection and output codec choices. Test the file locally before another live attempt. |
| Stream health is poor or the output disconnects | Check total upload use, lower the video bitrate or resolution, and leave the recommended 20% upload headroom. Monitor the connection during a representative test. |
| Loop transition is abrupt | Check whether the source ends with a cut, silence, or an incompatible boundary. The loop option repeats the file; it does not smooth the transition between its end and beginning. |
| Viewers cannot rewind or an archive is missing | Check DVR settings and stream duration. DVR rewind may be limited beyond 12 hours, while YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to encoder streams under 12 hours. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder configuration. |
Keep the source file and local storage in mind
FFmpeg reads the replay from local storage, so the computer must remain on and able to access the file for this method to continue. The replay and any local archive also consume storage. YouTube advises checking local archive integrity and confirming that archive size is growing when you are recording locally. An external drive is optional if existing storage is insufficient; it is not required for a prerecorded-file workflow. YouTube live streaming tips.
