How to Loop Guided Body Scan Meditations in FFmpeg for YouTube Live

Use FFmpeg’s input loop option to repeat a finished guided body scan while sending a properly paced, tested feed to YouTube Live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a finished body scan meditation file continuously with FFmpeg, place -stream_loop -1 before the file’s -i option, pace the file with -re, and send the encoded output to the server URL and stream key YouTube provides. The example below assumes one video file containing both picture and audio; separate audio or video inputs need their own looping and synchronization decisions.

What you need before you start

  • A finished meditation media file you have the right to use, including its narration, music, ambient audio, and visuals.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer that can stay powered on and connected for the duration of the broadcast.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming available, and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio.
  • A stable upload connection with enough headroom for the output bitrate.

Check the file’s streams before building the command. For example, run ffprobe -hide_banner "body-scan.mp4" and confirm whether it contains video, audio, or both. The command below expects both. A video-only file needs an audio source or an intentional silent track; an audio-only file needs a visual source if the stream is meant to show video.

Configure the YouTube live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube describes the key as the information that allows it to accept the encoder feed; treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository, or shared log.
  3. Use the ingestion method YouTube shows for the event. The example here uses RTMP-compatible FLV output; YouTube recommends the secure RTMPS variant of RTMP where available. Do not use an RTMP destination with an HLS workflow or vice versa.
  4. Keep the key outside public command history where possible, such as by supplying it through a protected environment variable or a private local script. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to that event.

YouTube’s encoder guidance currently lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance before a broadcast.

Build a continuous-loop FFmpeg command

This is an illustrative starting command, not a tested or universal configuration. It assumes a file with video and audio, H.264/AAC output, 30 fps, and an RTMP-compatible FLV destination:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "body-scan.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the filename, ingest URL, and key with your own values. Avoid placing a real key in a command you may share or a shell history others can read.

Why the loop works

-stream_loop -1 is an input option: it tells FFmpeg to repeat the following input indefinitely. It must come before the -i it applies to. -re reads a file at its native rate so the output is paced like a live feed rather than sent as fast as FFmpeg can process it. FFmpeg cautions against using low-rate reading on an actual live or capture input; this workflow is for a stored file. Do not confuse -stream_loop with FFplay’s separate playback option, -loop.

Match keyframes and bitrate to your output

At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, or a keyframe every two seconds. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP to preserve the desired interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The sample video bitrate is not a universal recommendation: choose from YouTube’s current table for the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec you plan to send, and make sure your upload connection has headroom. For example, YouTube’s current table recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30; it gives different values for other combinations.

The command fixes output at 30 fps but does not specify a scale filter. The resulting resolution will depend on the input and encoder behavior, so inspect the output and explicitly scale if your event requires a particular resolution. If the source is variable frame rate or has unusual dimensions, test the converted output rather than assuming the example matches it.

Separate audio and video files

Looping a video input does not automatically loop a separate finite audio input. Apply looping to every finite input that must continue, for example by placing -stream_loop -1 before each relevant -i, and map the intended streams explicitly. Separate narration and music tracks also need deliberate mixing and synchronization. If the audio ends before the video, viewers may see the meditation continue without sound; test past the end of the shortest source.

Adapt the command to the meditation file

  • Audio-only meditation: Add a visual source such as a still image or prepared video and map it alongside the audio. Ensure the visual source is also kept alive for the full broadcast. Do not assume an audio-only input will produce a valid video stream.
  • Video with no audio: Add an audio track or configure a silent audio source if the event expects audio. Verify that the chosen output mapping includes the streams YouTube should receive.
  • Image or slideshow: Still-image inputs generally need an explicit frame rate and duration treatment rather than the file-video assumptions in the example. Confirm how your installed FFmpeg build handles the source and test the full output.
  • Need a different resolution: Use a scale filter deliberately, preserving aspect ratio and avoiding unintended stretching. Choose a bitrate that matches the resulting resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s table.
  • Different codec or ingestion workflow: The example is H.264/AAC to FLV over RTMP(S). YouTube also documents HLS as a separate workflow using a rolling playlist, TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds; HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Do not combine HLS endpoint and segment settings with the command above.

Test the feed and monitor it live

  1. Run FFmpeg before the intended public start, using the same file, audio, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and network path planned for the event.
  2. Watch the encoder output for connection errors, timestamp problems, or repeated restarts. Confirm that video and audio remain present as the input reaches its end and begins again.
  3. Check YouTube Studio’s stream-health panel after the feed connects. Resolve warnings before relying on the stream.
  4. Check the viewer-facing watch page from a separate device or browser where practical, so you can confirm the public output and audio rather than only the local encoder log.
  5. For recovery behavior, FFmpeg documents RTMP examples that continue processing at real-time rate during temporary failure and retry streaming. This is not a guarantee that a failed network, source, encoder, or YouTube event will always reconnect successfully; watch the logs and YouTube stream health.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Runtime, archives, copyright, and monetization

YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold is not a guarantee that a continuously looping stream will be preserved as one uninterrupted archive. Decide whether your audience needs a finite live event, an intentionally restarted event, or a separate on-demand upload, and check the current behavior in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Looping a file does not establish permission to broadcast it or make it eligible for monetization. You need appropriate rights to every component, including the guided voice recording, background music, ambient sounds, and visuals. YouTube’s channel monetization policy, clarified on July 15, 2025, says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy. It also says, “What’s important is that the substance of each video should be materially varied and deliver creative, educational, or other value.” A single recording repeated continuously may be reviewed in the context of the channel and its content; no monetization outcome is guaranteed. Read YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The video plays once and stops -stream_loop -1 is missing, or it appears after the input it should affect. Put it before the relevant -i, then verify the output continues beyond the source duration.
Video continues but audio ends Audio is a separate finite input and was not looped, or the selected audio stream is shorter. Inspect streams with ffprobe; loop every required finite input and test the mapping and synchronization.
YouTube does not receive the feed Wrong event URL or key, incompatible protocol/container, or an event that is not ready to accept the encoder feed. Re-copy the URL and key from the correct Live Control Room event, confirm the selected ingestion method, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error.
Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems Output bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or settings may not match the chosen format. Run a speed test, lower the bitrate to an appropriate value from YouTube’s current table, preserve upload headroom, and repeat the preflight test.
Keyframe warning GOP cadence does not match the frame rate or exceeds the interval YouTube recommends. Set a two-second GOP for the output frame rate; do not exceed four seconds.
Stream disconnects and does not recover A retry option cannot fix a dead source, persistent network failure, invalid key, or ended YouTube event. Check both FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health, restore the underlying connection or event, and reconnect with a valid URL and key if needed.
FFmpeg rejects an option or behaves differently Installed version or build may differ, or the command may not fit the source format. Check ffmpeg -version and the installed documentation, then adapt and test the input and mappings before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer and home connection to stay on, StreamNeo can keep an uploaded recording looping to YouTube from the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload the meditation video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
