Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo loop one gaming VOD indefinitely, put FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i, then use -c copy to pass the existing audio and video streams through without decoding or re-encoding. For a sequence of VODs, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer instead. Neither method makes an incompatible file YouTube-ready: stream-copy cannot change codecs, bitrate, resolution, keyframes, or timestamps. Check the files against YouTube’s ingest requirements before going live.
What you need to check before choosing a command
FFmpeg stream-copy is fast and avoids quality loss caused by re-encoding, but it copies the source packets rather than fixing them. A file can therefore loop locally yet fail at YouTube ingest, or play with a discontinuity at the loop point. Check each VOD before you build the command.

- Inspect its container, video and audio codecs, number and layout of streams, time bases, duration, and timestamps.
- Confirm the copied video and audio streams are accepted by your chosen YouTube ingest profile.
- For a playlist, confirm every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Matching filenames or resolutions alone is not enough.
- Check whether the upload connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate with headroom.
No single stream-copy command is guaranteed to work for every gaming VOD or container. Treat the examples below as patterns to adapt and test against your files and FFmpeg build.
Loop one gaming VOD indefinitely
Use -stream_loop -1 as an input option immediately before the input it applies to. -c copy requests stream-copy for the output streams. In this pattern, replace the file path, YouTube ingest URL, and key placeholder with your own values; do not publish or share the real key.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i "gameplay.mp4" -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a pattern, not a tested universal command. It assumes the source streams can be copied into the chosen output container and are suitable for YouTube. If your FFmpeg build, file layout, or ingest endpoint needs explicit stream mapping or different output handling, adjust it only after inspecting the streams and validating the result. The process continues until you stop it; stopping FFmpeg ends its outgoing feed.
Loop a sequence of VODs with the concat demuxer
For a playlist, create a text file with one entry per VOD in the order you want them played. For example, save this as vods.txt beside the media files:

Then use the concat demuxer as the input and loop that input:

-safe 0 allows paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; use it only with a list you control. The concat demuxer presents the files sequentially as one input and is FFmpeg’s documented no-re-encode concat route. Its inputs need matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Timestamp adjustment depends on file durations: inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts, and unequal audio/video stream lengths can create gaps. Test the playlist from beginning to end, including the transition back to its first file.

Match the copied streams to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and CBR as recommended. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, described as a secure extension to RTMP. These are ingest requirements and recommendations, not transformations FFmpeg performs in copy mode. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
The recommended H.264 bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s published recommendations recorded in 2026 include:

| H.264 picture setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | YouTube guidance, 2026 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | YouTube guidance, 2026 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | YouTube guidance, 2026 |
These figures are for the listed H.264 modes; do not apply one row to a different codec, resolution, or frame rate. In copy mode, FFmpeg cannot bring a source bitrate or keyframe interval into line with YouTube’s guidance. If a VOD does not fit the ingest profile you need, prepare or re-encode it before streaming, or use a workflow that can transform it. That gives up the no-re-encode constraint.

Connect FFmpeg to your YouTube live stream
- Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command example, article, screenshot, or log you share. Use a placeholder when documenting a command.
- Insert the URL and key in your local command. Use the ingest destination YouTube gives you; the sample above is not a substitute for your own current Control Room values.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check picture, sound, stream health, and the loop or playlist transitions before relying on it for a public live session.
Plan for a stable upload connection
Your upload connection must carry the outgoing stream continuously. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and testing the connection before streaming. For example, a stream sent at 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps of stable upload capacity; the recommendation is to leave additional capacity rather than run the connection at its limit. See YouTube’s streaming tips. Monitor stream health during the live session, since a speed test does not guarantee a stable connection throughout.
Choose stream-copy or re-encoding
| Approach | What it does well | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
-c copy |
Passes the existing compressed streams without decoding and encoding them; avoids re-encode quality loss and reduces processing compared with encoding. | Cannot change codecs, bitrate, resolution, keyframes, or apply filters to repair the source. Container or ingest incompatibility can still prevent output. |
| Re-encoding | Can convert or adjust streams to meet a target codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or filtering need. | Requires decoding and encoding, uses more processing, and is no longer a no-re-encode workflow. |
If preserving the original compressed streams is the priority, first select files that already fit the intended YouTube ingest profile. If they do not, the practical choice is to prepare compatible files or accept conversion; stream-copy cannot satisfy both goals by itself.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg exits with a codec or muxing error: the source streams may not fit the chosen output container or destination. Inspect codecs and container, and verify that YouTube accepts the copied streams. A different output format may help only if it can carry the existing streams; changing formats does not convert codecs.
- The feed connects but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: compare the source codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. Copy mode cannot alter those encoded properties; prepare a compliant source if needed.
- Audio or video has a gap at a playlist transition: check that files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and that audio and video durations align. The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps based on file duration, so inaccurate duration information or unequal stream lengths can cause artifacts or gaps.
- The loop point stutters or jumps: inspect the end and beginning of the VOD for a natural cut, timestamp discontinuity, or stream mismatch. Infinite looping repeats the file; it does not create a seamless edit.
- The stream drops or buffers: check the connection’s sustained upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Review stream health and test again before a longer session.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: confirm the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, that the key has not been mistyped or exposed, and that the FFmpeg process is still running.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than managing a persistent FFmpeg process and upload connection yourself, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streaming to YouTube, not camera-based live video. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
