To repeat an MP4 indefinitely, put FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to. For example, this illustrative command sends a looped video to a continuous output:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv OUTPUT_URL
Replace OUTPUT_URL, the container, and the codecs with values supported by your destination. This option repeats the input; it does not guarantee a black-screen-free transition. To find a black frame at the join, inspect the source’s ending and beginning, check how the command handles the streams, and test the actual output in its intended player or destination.

Set up an indefinite whole-file loop
- Check FFmpeg’s version. Run
ffmpeg -version. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, and its documentation index recommends checking local documentation for older versions. If an option’s availability or behavior differs, consult the help and documentation for the version installed on your system: FFmpeg documentation. - Put the loop option before the input. Use
-stream_loop -1before the-ifor the file you want to repeat. FFmpeg documents-stream_loopas an input option:0means no repeat, while-1means repeat indefinitely. Its documentation says, “Set number of times input stream shall be looped.” See the FFmpeg command-line documentation. - Choose how to handle the output. The example below encodes video as H.264, audio as AAC, and uses FLV as the output format. Those are illustrative choices, not a guarantee of compatibility with every endpoint or FFmpeg build. Check the requirements of your actual destination.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv OUTPUT_URL
Replace input.mp4 with the file path and OUTPUT_URL with the destination address. Options generally apply to the next input or output, so their position matters. In this command, the loop option precedes the input it controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDiagnose a black frame at the join
-stream_loop -1 repeats an input; FFmpeg does not document it as a universal fix for black frames. The actual result can depend on the source’s first and last frames, its streams and timestamps, whether the command copies or encodes the streams, the output container, and the playback or streaming client.

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Inspect both ends of the source. Look at the last visible frames and the first visible frames in the MP4. If the file itself has a black tail or head, that segment will recur with every whole-file loop.
- Check for stream copy. If your command uses
-c copy, FFmpeg copies packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. That path cannot apply a video filter. If the copied output has an unwanted join, compare it with a re-encoded test; re-encoding is a diagnostic option, not a guarantee that the transition will be fixed. See FFmpeg’s stream-copy documentation. - Verify option placement and input. Confirm that
-stream_loop -1comes before the relevant-i, and that this is the input you intend to loop. An option placed against the wrong input will not configure the one you mean to repeat. - Test the real output path. Play the resulting output in the player or destination where the black frame occurs. A client-specific transition cannot be diagnosed from FFmpeg’s option documentation alone.
Choose the right kind of loop
Repeat the whole input with -stream_loop
Use -stream_loop when you want an input file or stream to recur. It is an input option, so place it before the corresponding -i. A value of -1 means indefinitely; 0 means no repeat.
Repeat selected video frames with the loop filter
FFmpeg’s video loop filter repeats a buffered range of frames; it is not the same as replaying an entire MP4. The filter documentation gives loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 as an example that repeats the first frame indefinitely. That freezes one frame rather than looping the whole video. See the FFmpeg loop-filter documentation.

Make a finite repeated file instead
An indefinitely looped input does not, by itself, define a finite output duration. For a bounded file, decide how many repeats or how much output time you need, then verify the resulting file and its duration. The FFmpeg command-line documentation describes loop counts, but the appropriate finite-output command depends on the use case; do not assume the continuous-output example above creates a finite MP4.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a pre-recorded video that stays live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping an FFmpeg process running on your own computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI works; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
