How to Loop an MP4 in VLC and Send It to YouTube Live

VLC’s VLM loop and stream output are useful building blocks, but a complete supported YouTube Live recipe is not documented. Learn how to test the setup safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use VLC’s stream-output and VLM features as building blocks for a repeating YouTube Live feed, but the official documentation reviewed does not provide a complete, verified VLC-to-YouTube setup. Treat a direct VLC configuration as version-dependent experimentation—not a guaranteed recipe—and test privately or unlisted before relying on it. YouTube’s documented workflow is to send an encoder feed using the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room.

What you need to know before setting it up

  • YouTube Live accepts a feed from encoder software. You enter the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes this workflow.
  • VLC’s stream output can process media it can read and send it to a file or network. Its documented output chain includes modules for standard output and transcoding. That establishes general streaming capability, not YouTube-compatible settings for every VLC build. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 stream-output guide covers the feature.
  • For a documented VLC loop, use VLM’s broadcast loop option: it restarts a broadcast’s input list after the last input ends. This is distinct from clicking the ordinary playback repeat control, which official documentation does not establish as a way to keep an outbound network stream alive. VideoLAN’s VLM guide describes the broadcast behavior.

The exact output protocol, mux, and codec combination that works with YouTube depends on the VLC build and configuration. The sources do not establish a complete supported end-to-end VLC recipe, so this guide separates documented YouTube steps from VLC capabilities rather than presenting unverified GUI clicks or commands as proven.

Check channel eligibility and prepare the video

Confirm that your channel can go live

YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. Check eligibility before troubleshooting VLC; a valid video output cannot bypass a channel restriction. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for current requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose and inspect the MP4

Use a file VLC can play, and watch it from beginning to end before configuring a long broadcast. Confirm that picture and sound are present, that the ending is suitable to repeat, and that no one-time intro or outro will be jarring on each pass. A loop repeats the same content; it does not create new material or make the video live from a camera.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Check that you have the right to stream the video and its audio. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether an encoder connects successfully; a technically working loop does not grant permission to use music, footage, or other protected material.

Set YouTube’s encoder details

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a new stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. The interface provides the ingest details for that stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the displayed stream URL and stream key into the matching server and key fields of the encoder you are using. Do not guess a URL or reuse details from a different event without checking Live Control Room.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as password-like; do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
  4. Where the encoder supports it, use the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; copy the exact URL rather than substituting one. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Choose encoder settings that match the video

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube operational recommendations; use them only if the selected VLC output path exposes compatible controls. Check YouTube’s encoder settings page for the current complete table.

1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended

These figures are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality or a VLC preset. Choose the row that matches your intended resolution and frame rate, and ensure your sustained upload capacity can carry the video and audio with room for network variation. If the source file is lower resolution or frame rate, a higher output target will not restore missing detail.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. A static or silent test can miss problems that appear in the actual video. Its guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Configure VLC looping without treating it as a verified YouTube recipe

Use VLM for the documented broadcast loop

VideoLAN’s VLM documentation describes broadcasts with media inputs, output, and options. Its loop option restarts the broadcast’s input list after the final input ends. That is the VLC looping behavior directly documented for a broadcast. The VLC 3.0 guide does not by itself establish which output protocol, mux, or encoder settings will be accepted by YouTube in your particular environment.

Consult the VLM documentation for your installed VLC version and operating system to build the broadcast and its network output. Do not assume that the ordinary repeat-one or repeat-all playback button is equivalent: ordinary player repeat and a VLM broadcast loop are different features, and the former is not documented as maintaining an outbound stream.

Verify the complete path with a private test

  1. Build the VLM broadcast loop using the instructions applicable to your VLC version. Confirm locally that the MP4 reaches its end and starts again.
  2. Configure VLC’s output using the exact YouTube stream URL, key, and protocol shown in Live Control Room. Use codec, bitrate, and keyframe controls that match YouTube’s guidance where VLC exposes them. This part is version-dependent and is not a verified official end-to-end configuration.
  3. Start VLC, then check Live Control Room for an incoming preview and stream-health information. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
  4. Watch through the end of the MP4 and into the next loop. Check that video and audio continue, the transition is acceptable, and the stream remains healthy. Do not switch to a public broadcast until this whole cycle has passed.

End the stream safely

Stop sending content from the encoder, then end the broadcast in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that archive behavior is not a substitute for ending the stream deliberately. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming feed Confirm channel eligibility, that VLC is actually sending output, and that the stream URL and key are copied from the correct Live Control Room stream. Use RTMPS only with the exact supplied URL and an encoder that supports it.
The stream connects but YouTube reports poor health Check the selected codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings guidance. Check sustained upload capacity and test with representative motion and sound.
The MP4 plays, but the network output stops at its end Confirm that the broadcast is configured with VLM’s loop behavior. Ordinary player repeat is not documented as restarting an outbound broadcast.
The picture repeats but audio is missing or intermittent Check the MP4’s audio during local playback and inspect the encoder’s audio codec/output settings. Retest the full cycle while monitoring Live Control Room.
The key no longer works or may have leaked Reset it in Live Control Room if you are a channel owner or manager, then replace the saved key in VLC. Treat the new key as a credential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an uploaded video to keep a YouTube channel live without depending on a VLC configuration or a computer at home, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
