You can loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live without renting a VPS by running OBS Studio on a computer you already have. Add the video as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, and send OBS’s output to YouTube through Live Control Room. The computer, OBS, and a stable internet connection must stay running for the broadcast to continue; “no VPS” does not mean “no encoder.”
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to go live, with live streaming enabled.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that can remain on for the planned broadcast.
- The video file you want to loop, plus rights to use its video and all audio in the stream.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the settings you choose.
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; its guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature in advance: first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Set up the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup. Enter them in OBS when configuring its streaming output. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Choose the stream’s title, visibility, and other details in Live Control Room. Keep the control room open so you can check the incoming preview and stream health.
Make OBS repeat one video
- Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Name the source, then browse to and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties. This restarts the file when playback reaches its end. Check the source’s audio settings and make sure the video fits the scene canvas as intended.
- For several videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source to create a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that VLC must be installed for this source type to appear.
- Set OBS’s stream output to the YouTube stream URL and key you copied. Select a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your connection can sustain; there is no universal bitrate that is right for every combination of quality, motion, and upload capacity.
OBS documents its media playback controls in its Media Sources guide. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains stream configuration. YouTube transcodes the incoming encoder feed into multiple formats for viewers, so test the quality you send rather than assuming every viewer will receive the same playback resolution.

Start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Before launch, run the scene through a complete check: confirm the file plays, its audio is audible, the loop restarts as expected, and the content includes movement representative of the actual stream.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming. In Live Control Room, wait for the feed to appear in the preview and review stream health.
- When the preview and health indicators look ready, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Keep OBS running, the computer powered, and the internet connection stable. Check for interruptions while the broadcast is live.
- To finish, end the stream in Live Control Room, then stop sending from OBS.
What “loop” means—and what YouTube does not do
The loop happens in the encoder’s source: OBS repeatedly sends the video as a live feed. It is not a channel-level YouTube repeat switch. A viewer’s player repeat control only repeats playback for that individual viewer; it does not make your channel broadcast the file live.

Plan around the distinction between a looping source and a continuous YouTube session. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that one live session or replay will remain available indefinitely. Check YouTube’s current live and archive behavior before planning a longer broadcast.
Can this run without a VPS?
Yes. A local OBS setup avoids VPS rental and administration, but the computer running OBS, its power, and its network connection are still part of the broadcast. It can be a practical choice for a scheduled or limited-duration loop if you can leave that setup running.

If you need the stream to continue while your own equipment is off, a hosted playout service is a different option: the encoder runs in the cloud instead of on your local computer. Compare options based on unattended operation, expected duration, recovery after a disconnect, start/stop controls, playlist support, and total cost. Confirm any provider’s current capabilities and terms directly; they vary by service.

Troubleshooting common problems
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is streaming, the stream URL and key are correct, and the stream is set up in the intended channel’s Live Control Room. If the key was mistyped or exposed, correct or replace it in YouTube Studio.
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is enabled. For a playlist, verify Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- The VLC Video source is missing: OBS requires VLC to be installed for this source type to appear. For a single file, use Media Source instead.
- Viewers report buffering or the feed drops: Check OBS and Live Control Room stream health, then lower the bitrate or resolution if your upload connection cannot sustain the current output. Test again with representative movement and audio.
- The broadcast stops when you leave: The local encoder depends on the computer, OBS, power, and network staying available. For operation with local equipment off, use a hosted option rather than assuming OBS will keep running unattended.
- The replay is unavailable or shorter than expected: Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive guidance for streams under 12 hours as a promise of an indefinite replay or a single endlessly available live session. Check current YouTube live and archive rules for your intended duration.
Rights and presentation
Use video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. Make the prerecorded nature clear where appropriate, and do not assume that permission to use one part of a video also covers its soundtrack. Copyright questions and monetization outcomes depend on the content and applicable rules; the setup steps alone cannot establish either.
