To loop a video without restarting your YouTube broadcast, enable Loop in the OBS Media Source properties and leave OBS’s outgoing stream running. The loop repeats the media file inside OBS; it does not require stopping and restarting the YouTube stream.
Loop one video in OBS
- In the OBS Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source. Sources are added to the scene in OBS. OBS Sources Guide
- Select the local video file in the Media Source properties.
- Check Loop. OBS documents this setting as replaying the file after playback completes. OBS Media Sources
- Make sure the Media Source is present and visible in the scene currently being sent to YouTube.
- Keep the OBS streaming session active. Do not click Stop Streaming to make the video play again; looping the source and ending the encoder stream are separate actions.
Loop a playlist of videos instead
For several clips played in order, use OBS’s VLC Video Source rather than creating a separate stream for each clip.

- Install VLC if it is not installed. OBS says VLC Video Source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add VLC Video Source to the scene and add the local video files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the playlist reaches the end.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit the scene. OBS offers options to continue, pause, or stop playback when the source is not visible. This controls source playback, not whether the OBS application window is visible. OBS Media Sources
Choose the right OBS source
| What you want | OBS source | Setting | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one clip | Media Source | Loop | Simple setup for a single file. |
| Play several clips in sequence and repeat them | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist | Requires VLC installation and playlist setup. |
| Keep a playlist playing while its source is hidden | VLC Video Source | Visibility Behaviour: continue | Playback can depend on whether the source is visible. |
These source behaviors are documented by OBS.
Keep the YouTube broadcast active
The media source’s loop setting controls local playback in the OBS scene. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe ending a broadcast by stopping content from the encoder, so leave OBS streaming rather than stopping the encoder when you only want the video to repeat. - 15 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly control your apps, tools and platforms.
- One-Touch Operation: trigger single or multiple actions, launch social posts, adjust audio, mute mic, turn on lights, and much more.

- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
Neither the OBS source documentation nor YouTube’s encoder guidance guarantees that every live scene or source edit will be visually seamless. Test the loop and any planned scene changes before relying on them for a live production; OBS recommends testing stream setups. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Troubleshooting
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked. For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video Source.
- The source is missing or unavailable: For VLC Video Source, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- Playback pauses when you switch scenes or hide the source: Review the VLC Video Source visibility behavior and select continue if playback should carry on while hidden.
- The YouTube broadcast ends: Check whether OBS’s outgoing stream was stopped or whether YouTube’s auto-stop setting is enabled. The source loop does not keep an encoder stream alive after it has been stopped.
- You need a transition to look seamless: OBS and YouTube do not guarantee seamlessness for every live edit. Test the particular source and scene change before using it on air.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
