To show a prerecorded vacation rental walkthrough on YouTube Live, create an encoder-based live stream and set the video or playlist to repeat in the encoder or playback source. YouTube’s general Live setup guides explain how to send the feed; the repeat setting depends on the software or hardware you choose.
Can you loop a video directly on YouTube Live?
No. YouTube’s Loop videos or playlists control repeats a video or playlist while someone watches it. A Live broadcast uses a separate workflow: an encoder sends a video feed to YouTube. As YouTube puts it, “When watching YouTube, you can play a video or playlist on repeat by looping it.” That watch-page feature does not make a prerecorded video into a Live broadcast.

For a walkthrough replay, the file must repeat at its source, and the encoder must keep sending that output to YouTube. YouTube’s general Live instructions do not specify how to configure looping in every encoder, so the exact controls depend on your chosen software or hardware.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube states that users must be at least 16 to livestream. If you are enabling Live for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A prerecorded walkthrough that you have the right to stream, plus an encoder or playback source that can repeat a file or playlist.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity for your selected stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and its stream URL and key.
For the basic workflow, you do not need a dedicated hardware encoder. YouTube lists software encoder options and says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Choose software or hardware based on your existing setup, automation needs, reliability requirements, production needs, and budget; YouTube does not make the third-party products listed in its guidance.

How to repeat the walkthrough in a YouTube Live broadcast
- Confirm that Live is available. Sign in to YouTube and check that your channel meets the verification, recent-restriction, and age requirements. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time Live activation.
- Create an encoder-based stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s Live streaming setup instructions cover creating the stream and connecting an encoder.
- Set up the repeat at the source. In your chosen encoder or playback source, select the walkthrough file or playlist and configure that application or device to repeat it. The setting is encoder-specific; YouTube does not provide one universal Studio toggle for looping a live feed. Check the encoder’s own instructions for the exact controls.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live setup into the corresponding encoder fields. The key works like a password for the stream; keep it private and do not share it in screenshots, documents, or messages.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder feed and confirm that Live Control Room receives it. Check the picture, audio, loop behavior, and watch-page playback before promoting the broadcast.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Use the Live Control Room workflow to take the stream live if required. Keep an eye on stream health and playback while it runs. When finished, end the broadcast through the YouTube and encoder workflow. YouTube automatically archives live streams shorter than 12 hours.
Encoder settings and connection checks
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion and supports H.264 video. Choose settings your encoder supports and your upload connection can sustain; a higher resolution is not automatically more reliable on a limited or unstable connection. YouTube transcodes incoming streams for playback on different devices.
| Setting or check | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Ingestion protocol | RTMPS recommended | Select RTMPS in the encoder if available, and use the server URL provided for the stream. |
| Video codec | H.264 is supported | Use a codec supported by both your encoder and the YouTube settings for the stream. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly if the control is available. |
| Upload bandwidth | Leave 20% headroom above total stream bitrate | Check your upload speed under realistic conditions, then monitor stream health for interruptions. |
See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its current supported settings and bitrate recommendations. Its network tips recommend testing bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom, rather than using your full measured upload capacity for the stream.

Clear rights and protect guest privacy
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it temporarily, or lead to termination. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: the rights holder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains these outcomes.
Recommended Free Tools
Before broadcasting, check the walkthrough’s music, artwork, and other third-party material. YouTube’s Livestream terms say that content providers represent and warrant that they have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including applicable music rights, and must follow applicable laws and Community Guidelines. Remove background music you cannot use or obtain the permissions needed for the stream.

Filming permissions for occupants, guests, neighboring properties, and private areas depend on the property and applicable local law. YouTube’s general Live guidance does not settle those questions; obtain the necessary permissions for your specific property and location before filming or broadcasting.
Troubleshooting a looping Live walkthrough
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video repeats for viewers but is not Live | The regular watch-page Loop control is being used. | Create an encoder-based stream in Live Control Room and repeat the file at the encoder or playback source. |
| Live Control Room receives no feed | The encoder is not connected or its stream details are incorrect. | Check that the encoder is running and that its server URL and private stream key match the current YouTube stream. |
| The stream drops or playback stutters | The upload connection may not sustain the total bitrate, or may lack bandwidth headroom. | Test upload speed, lower the encoder bitrate if needed, preserve 20% headroom, and monitor stream health. |
| The video plays once and stops | The source is not configured to repeat, or its repeat behavior differs from what you expect. | Check the loop or playlist settings in the specific encoder or playback source; YouTube Studio does not supply a universal source-loop control. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after a content match | YouTube detected third-party material, or a rights holder’s allowlist is needed. | Review the stream’s content and permissions, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting if you have a license. |
