To loop a recorded property tour on YouTube Live from Linux, run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file, encode the video to settings YouTube accepts, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The loop option repeats the file; it does not by itself connect to YouTube or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you start
- A Linux machine with an FFmpeg build that includes the encoder you plan to use. The example below uses
libx264; encoder availability can vary by build. - Your property-tour video, with its audio and video tracks checked before streaming.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available. Check Live Control Room for account availability; this workflow does not establish eligibility or channel-specific limits.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen stream bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity before going live.
- Permission to rebroadcast the footage and appropriate privacy protections for people, addresses, interiors, or other identifying details shown in the tour. The technical settings do not determine your legal rights or obligations.
FFmpeg’s documentation says, “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop.” Because -stream_loop is an input option, place it before the corresponding -i.

Get the RTMPS URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or open the live stream you intend to use.
- Find the stream URL and stream key in the stream’s settings. Use the RTMPS URL when available, and copy both values exactly.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository, or share a screenshot that exposes it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s controls before streaming again.
YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain how to find the URL and key. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, updated 2026-09-14 UTC, specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and TLS connection on port 443. Do not substitute a guessed server address for the endpoint shown in your account.

Choose YouTube-compatible encoding settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3.

Recommended video bitrate examples
The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations verified against the current guidance in 2026. They are video-bitrate recommendations, not universal requirements or independent measurements; choose a rate your connection can sustain.

The example command uses H.264 at 1080p30’s listed 5 Mbps recommendation. It does not force a 1080p30 output size or frame rate: it encodes using the input’s dimensions and frame rate unless you add explicit video filters. If your source or target differs, select a matching YouTube recommendation and make the output dimensions and frame rate deliberate. Confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected codec and that the output path supports RTMPS.

Run the looping FFmpeg stream
Replace tour.mp4 with your file, and replace the endpoint and key placeholders with the exact RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private.

-f flv "rtmps://INGESTION_URL/STREAM_KEY"-rerequests real-time pacing for file playout; it is not the loop switch.-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Put it before-i, and repeat the option before each input you want looped.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding, and-pix_fmt yuv420psets a widely used pixel format. The command is a pattern, not a verified recipe for every file, FFmpeg build, endpoint, or network.-b:v 5M -maxrate 5Msets a 5 Mbps video target and maximum in this example;-bufsize 10Msets the rate-control buffer. These values illustrate the 1080p30 H.264 recommendation and should be adjusted for the actual target.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a 2-second interval at 30 fps. If you stream at another frame rate, adjust the GOP so the keyframe interval remains within YouTube’s recommendation.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio. The source needs an audio track for audio to be present; the command does not create meaningful sound from a silent file.-f flvselects the output container used in this RTMP/RTMPS command pattern.
Do not assume that a property-tour file has an audio track or that every input matches the example’s intended bitrate and frame rate. Inspect the input’s streams and, when necessary, map the intended audio or video explicitly. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast.

Test and start the broadcast
- Start with a test stream or an unlisted/private setup appropriate to your channel. Confirm the intended destination and visibility in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
- Run the command and watch FFmpeg’s output for connection, encoding, or input errors. Keep the terminal open while this DIY stream is running.
- Check YouTube’s stream preview and health messages. Confirm that video moves, audio is present if expected, and the stream is arriving at the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Run an upload speed test and compare sustainable capacity with the stream’s total outgoing bitrate, including audio and protocol overhead. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Leave capacity for normal network variation rather than treating the encoder bitrate as the entire required connection speed.
- Only proceed with the intended broadcast after the test looks and sounds right. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Common problems and fixes
