You can loop a prerecorded nature video into YouTube Live by running FFmpeg on a computer or server, repeating the local file as its input, and sending the encoded stream to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The computer running FFmpeg and its internet connection must stay available for the broadcast. Set up and test the stream before relying on it: YouTube can interrupt live content over detected third-party material, and streams lasting 12 hours or more are not covered by its automatic-archive guarantee.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can access the video file and maintain a reliable internet connection.
- A nature video and audio you own or have rights to use in a public livestream. Confirm that the license covers livestreaming, territory, duration, and monetization if relevant.
- The stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password; do not share it in screenshots, public scripts, or logs.
FFmpeg’s command-line options apply in order to the next input or output, so where an option appears matters. The command below is a practical starting point, not a guarantee for every FFmpeg build, file, or account. Check the installed FFmpeg version and verify the result in YouTube’s preview before sharing the stream publicly. See the FFmpeg documentation for command syntax and option behavior.
Set up the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live. In Live Control Room, create or select a stream configured for encoder software.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use RTMPS when YouTube provides it; YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Do not paste your key into a public webpage or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- For an initial test, choose a private or unlisted broadcast if those visibility choices are available to your channel. Confirm that the stream appears in the preview and that Live Control Room reports a healthy signal before making it public.

Prepare a continuous-loop FFmpeg command
Replace the example file path, stream URL, and key with your own values. This example uses a two-second keyframe interval, H.264 video, AAC audio, and a constant target bitrate for a conventional SDR stream. It re-encodes the file so FFmpeg can apply the chosen output settings; re-encoding uses CPU resources, and the appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, source quality, and available upload bandwidth.

The options after -i configure the output. The server URL and key format may differ in how YouTube presents them; copy the exact connection details from Live Control Room and follow its current instructions. Do not treat this illustrative command as tested for every build or URL format.
Choose a suitable bitrate and frame rate
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the following recommended H.264 bitrates. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of quality or universal minimums. Choose settings that your source supports and your sustained upload connection can handle; leave headroom for network variation.

The example command targets 30 fps and 4 Mbps, which aligns with YouTube’s listed recommendation for 240p–720p at 30 fps. If you use 720p at 60 fps, set the output frame rate and keyframe settings accordingly and ensure the connection can sustain the higher target bitrate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder recommendations include H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate; H.264 and AAC are used here as a conventional example. See YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance before choosing a different resolution or codec.
Nature footage does not have a special YouTube bitrate rule in the cited guidance. A largely static scene may encode differently from fast-moving footage, but do not assume that low motion removes the need for a stable connection or compatible settings.

Stream-copy versus re-encoding
The example re-encodes video and audio, which gives you control over output settings but consumes processing resources and may reduce quality relative to the source. Stream-copying can avoid that extra encoding work, but only makes sense when the source codecs and stream format are compatible with the output and YouTube accepts them. The right choice depends on the actual file; inspect its codecs and test the feed in Live Control Room rather than assuming a particular nature-video file will work unchanged.
Start, check, and stop the broadcast
- Run the command from a terminal on the machine that holds the video file. If the file is elsewhere, use an accessible local path or mount it first.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for connection errors, encoder errors, or repeated reconnects. Keep the terminal and machine running while you want the stream to continue.
- In Live Control Room, check the preview, audio, and stream health. Verify that the video actually repeats at the end of the file and that there are no black frames, missing audio, or visible encoding problems.
- Monitor the machine and network during the broadcast. A process crash, power loss, or internet outage can stop the feed; this basic command does not add an automatic restart or failover system.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg deliberately with
qin its terminal or the appropriate interrupt for your environment, then end the broadcast in Live Control Room. Confirm the stream has ended there.
Copyright, Content ID, and Indian rights context
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects material that conflicts with its rules or a rights holder’s settings, it may replace the live video with a placeholder, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. YouTube specifically warns that a license alone may not prevent interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Use footage and sound you created, or verify that the license permits public livestreaming and covers every included element, including music, ambient recordings, and stock clips. YouTube identifies permission, applicable Creative Commons terms, copyright exceptions, and YouTube Audio Library or Creator Music as possible routes for using material, while warning that none guarantees avoiding a claim or strike. See YouTube’s copyright guidance. Do not assume a video labelled “nature,” “royalty-free,” or “public domain” is safe without checking its actual rights and license terms.

Will YouTube keep the stream live and archive it?
The stream can remain live while FFmpeg, the host computer or server, and the network connection keep sending a valid feed, and while YouTube accepts it. The loop in the command repeats the file; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that automatic archive for an indefinite stream or one lasting 12 hours or longer; plan to stop within the stated window if an automatic archive matters, and check the finished stream in YouTube Studio.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, the stream URL and key are copied exactly, and the selected Live Control Room stream is configured for an encoder. Reset the key if it may have been exposed, then replace it in the command.
- The stream connects but playback is unstable: Lower the resolution or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, check for competing uploads, and inspect Live Control Room’s stream-health status. A brief speed test is not proof that the connection can sustain a continuous broadcast.
- Video or audio is missing: Confirm the source file contains the track you expect and that FFmpeg can decode it. Try a short test with the example H.264/AAC output settings and inspect the preview before going public.
- The loop does not repeat or FFmpeg exits: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant-iinput and that the file can be read through to its end. FFmpeg option order matters; consult the documentation for the installed version. - The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Stop and review the notice in YouTube Studio. Remove or replace disputed material, obtain the required rights, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. A claimed license does not by itself ensure the live feed will remain uninterrupted.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration and the finished broadcast in Studio. YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not indefinite broadcasts.
