Short answer: VLC can play a nature playlist locally, and VideoLAN documents a way to broadcast several files in sequence over a local HTTP stream. But the official VLC material reviewed does not show that desktop VLC alone can loop a playlist indefinitely and send it directly to YouTube Live. For YouTube, you need an encoder configured with the stream’s server URL and stream key. Treat local looping and YouTube delivery as separate jobs, and verify that your installed VLC version and chosen encoder support the workflow you plan to use.
What “loop forever” means for a YouTube stream
There are two different tasks here: repeating media in a player, and transmitting a live feed to YouTube. A playlist that repeats on your computer is not automatically a YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s setup instructions call for entering its Live server URL and stream key in an encoder, which sends the feed for YouTube to accept. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes that handoff.
VideoLAN’s desktop documentation is for VLC playback and playlist broadcasting. Its VLM example plays multiple files successively and uses sout-keep to prevent the stream from breaking when one file ends. The example is a local HTTP broadcast; it does not document an endlessly repeating playlist or a YouTube Live encoder destination. VideoLAN’s VLM documentation is useful for understanding that supported example, but it is not a complete recipe for the title’s full workflow.
Set up the YouTube side first
- Create or select a stream: In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open the stream you intend to use in Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details: Get the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube says to enter both in the encoder.
- Protect the stream key: Treat it like a credential. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it as part of a playlist or configuration file.
- Configure and start the encoder: Enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder you have selected, then start sending the feed.
- Go live when ready: For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and select Go live. When finished, stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in the control room.
These are YouTube’s general encoder steps, not VLC-specific menu instructions. The exact labels and capabilities depend on the encoder and its version; the reviewed official documentation does not establish a particular VLC-to-YouTube configuration.

What the documented VLC playlist broadcast does—and does not do
VideoLAN’s VLM example defines multiple media items and plays them successively. Its sout-keep option keeps the stream from breaking between files. The documented destination is a local HTTP stream, not YouTube Live. It therefore demonstrates sequential playback and stream continuity between those files, not an endless loop or a direct YouTube connection.
Do not assume that VLC’s ordinary playback repeat controls will also repeat a broadcast sent through a separate encoder. Likewise, do not assume that a local VLM stream can be pasted into YouTube as the encoder feed without an additional, verified handoff. The official material cited here does not confirm either behavior for desktop VLC.

A safe way to validate your setup
- Check your exact software: Record your operating system, installed VLC version, and the encoder you intend to use. The cited VideoLAN page is desktop documentation labeled version 3.0; it may not match the interface or behavior of a different release.
- Test local playback first: Confirm that every nature clip plays correctly and in the intended order. Check file paths and whether the playlist behaves as expected after the last clip.
- Test the encoder handoff separately: Confirm that your encoder can send a preview to the YouTube stream using its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
- Verify continuity before relying on it: Observe what happens at the end of a clip and at the end of the playlist. Confirm that the encoder continues sending a feed and that YouTube remains connected. Do not infer indefinite operation from a successful short test.
- End the test cleanly: Stop the encoder feed, then end the stream in Live Control Room if you are finished.
This validates the pieces without claiming a menu sequence or VLC capability not established by the official documentation. YouTube says streams that end under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive rule, not a promise that a stream will stay connected forever or that a particular setup will run indefinitely.
Check rights before broadcasting nature footage or sound
Make sure you have permission to use every video and audio track for a YouTube livestream. The official VLC and YouTube setup pages cited above do not establish the licensing status of nature clips, ambient recordings, music, or other media. A file that plays locally is not necessarily cleared for public broadcasting.
