To render one hour of a local nature video by repeating it, run ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -map 0 -c copy output.mp4. Replace the filenames and duration as needed. The loop option repeats the input indefinitely; the duration stops the output after one hour. Stream copying avoids re-encoding when the source streams and output container are compatible.
Make a finite looping video file
- Check the installed FFmpeg build. Run
ffmpeg -versionand, if needed,man ffmpeg. Ubuntu versions can ship different builds; Ubuntu Jammy’s manual documents package build7:4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1, which is a release-specific reference, not a version claim for every Ubuntu installation. FFmpeg notes that its regenerated online documentation corresponds to the newest revision and points users of older revisions to their installed documentation: FFmpeg command-line documentation and Ubuntu Jammy package information. - Open a terminal in the directory containing your video, or use full paths for the input and output files.
- Run the render command:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -map 0 -c copy output.mp4. Here,-stream_loop -1applies to the input that follows it, so it must appear before-i. FFmpeg defines-1as infinite repetition and0as no looping.-t 01:00:00limits the output to one hour; change it for a different duration.-map 0requests all input streams, and-c copyasks FFmpeg to copy streams rather than decode and re-encode them. See the option details in the FFmpeg command-line documentation. - Check the resulting file. Play
output.mp4, including the points where the source repeats, and confirm its duration and audio/video behavior are suitable for your use.
Choose streamcopy or re-encoding
Use streamcopy when the existing streams work
-c copy is generally the efficient choice when the input’s streams are compatible with the target container and do not need conversion. It avoids another lossy encode. But requesting every stream with -map 0 does not make every combination of video, audio, subtitles, metadata, and MP4 compatibility work automatically. The source file and installed FFmpeg build determine what can be copied into the output. FFmpeg explains streamcopy and stream selection in its command-line documentation.

Re-encode when compatibility requires it
If streamcopy fails or the output is unsuitable for the intended player, remove -c copy and select encoders and output settings that match the destination. The right codecs depend on the source, target container, player, and installed FFmpeg build; there is no universal encoder setting established for every nature video. Check available encoders and local documentation before choosing them.

Render until a chosen stopping point—or keep playback running
For a finite file, keep -t in the command and set the required duration. For playback that should continue until you stop it, omit -t and direct FFmpeg into a suitable player or output workflow. An ordinary file output without a stopping condition can keep growing, so do not use that approach as an unattended, unlimited recording unless you intend to manage the resulting storage. The exact command for live display depends on the player or output target; the loop option alone does not define a safe setup for every configuration.

Repeating a clip does not make its join seamless
-stream_loop -1 repeats the source; it does not crossfade the end into the beginning or repair a discontinuity. Watch and listen at the boundary. A hard visual jump, abrupt change in ambient sound, click, or mismatch in audio and video duration may remain every time the clip repeats. If the join is distracting, edit the source boundary or use an appropriate transition workflow. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes concatenation approaches, but joining files can require compatible stream properties or preparation; concatenation is not automatically a seamless-loop recipe.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The input plays only once: put
-stream_loop -1before the relevant-i. It is an input option, so placing it after the input may not apply to that file. - The render never finishes: an infinite input loop needs a stopping condition for a finite output. Add
-twith the desired duration. - FFmpeg reports an incompatible stream or container: the requested streams may not be suitable for streamcopy into the chosen output. Try a compatible container or remove
-c copyand select suitable encoders; check stream and codec support for your build. - Some tracks are missing or the output behaves unexpectedly:
-map 0requests all input streams. Multiple audio tracks, subtitles, metadata, and container support can affect the result. Inspect the source streams and choose an explicit mapping if you do not want every stream. - The loop is technically repeating but sounds or looks abrupt: the command does not smooth the boundary. Edit or transition the source and inspect the new join.
- An option or encoder name is unrecognized: Ubuntu package versions differ. Check
ffmpeg -versionand the installedman ffmpegrather than assuming an option in the newest online manual exists in your build.
