How to Loop a Local YouTube Live Playlist with FFmpeg on Raspberry Pi

Use FFmpeg’s input loop option to send local prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube Live stream from a Raspberry Pi. Learn the setup, output considerations, and common fixes.

To loop prerecorded videos into a continuous YouTube Live broadcast from a Raspberry Pi, put the files in a local playlist, tell FFmpeg to loop that input with -stream_loop -1, and send the output to the event’s YouTube RTMP or RTMPS address using its stream key. The playlist in this workflow is on the Pi—not a YouTube watch-page playlist. Test the stream before relying on it: the required encoding work and stable upload rate depend on your files, Pi model, FFmpeg build, and connection.

What “YouTube Live playlist” means here

This method sends prerecorded local media files from the Raspberry Pi as one live feed. YouTube receives an encoder stream; it does not play the files as separate videos in a watch-page playlist. Official FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not establish that a YouTube watch-page playlist URL can be used directly as a local FFmpeg media playlist.

The overall sequence is: prepare compatible local files, create or schedule a YouTube Live event, obtain its server URL and stream key, run FFmpeg with the playlist as a looping input, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health.

Before you begin

  • A Raspberry Pi with FFmpeg installed and enough storage for the media files. The documentation cited here does not specify a Pi model, OS image, or installation method.
  • Prerecorded video and audio files you have the rights to stream. Check that the files have compatible video and audio streams and timestamps if you plan to concatenate or stream-copy them.
  • A YouTube account with access to Live Control Room and a created or scheduled live event. Availability and account requirements can vary; check your account’s current interface.
  • A stable upload connection with spare capacity above the chosen stream bitrate. Measure the connection and test the actual stream rather than assuming the Pi or network will sustain a particular setting.

Set up the YouTube Live event and credentials

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the event’s server URL and stream key. Use the URL and key YouTube displays for the event; do not assume a remembered ingest address or another event’s key is correct.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as password-like: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, article, or shared shell history. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your encoder configuration.
  4. Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can verify the preview and stream health after FFmpeg connects.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the connection flow and state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a longer looping broadcast being saved as one uninterrupted archive.

Prepare a local playlist

FFmpeg can read a playlist-like input, but the exact format and command depend on the installed build and the files. One common approach is a concat demuxer list: create a plain text file such as playlist.txt with one entry for each local file, using paths that the Pi can read.

file '/home/pi/videos/part1.mp4'
file '/home/pi/videos/part2.mp4'
file '/home/pi/videos/part3.mp4'

Use paths appropriate to your own system. Paths containing quotes or unusual characters need appropriate escaping for the concat file format. Check FFmpeg’s formats documentation and demuxer documentation for the precise syntax supported by your version.

Before choosing stream copy, inspect the source files. Copying can reduce CPU work when their codecs, stream layouts, and timing already match the output YouTube will accept. If they differ, or the output settings need to change, transcoding may be required. A single copy command is not safe to prescribe without knowing the files and FFmpeg build.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

YouTube’s current live encoder settings guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC and MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.

Rank #3
CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit (4GB RAM)
  • CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit

For ordinary SDR H.264, YouTube currently recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not Raspberry Pi performance measurements or guarantees of delivery on your connection. The same guide provides recommendations for other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations; select the row for your intended output rather than treating these two examples as universal values.

  • Pick a resolution and frame rate that suit the source and that your specific Pi can handle in real time if encoding is needed.
  • Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where your chosen FFmpeg output configuration supports those settings.
  • Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain with headroom. YouTube recommends testing connection speed and stream health; real motion and audio are more revealing than a static menu or short idle segment.
  • Do not infer that a Pi can encode a given resolution or frame rate just because YouTube accepts it. The cited platform guidance contains no Pi-specific benchmark.

Run FFmpeg as a continuous live output

FFmpeg command-line option order matters: -stream_loop is an input option and belongs before the -i it configures. In current FFmpeg documentation, -1 means loop indefinitely. The playlist input and output options below are a structure, not a copy-and-run command: the required video/audio mapping, codec choices, CBR settings, keyframe configuration, and RTMP/RTMPS destination depend on your installed build, source files, and YouTube event details.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i playlist.txt [output options] -f flv "<YouTube server URL>/<stream key>"

Use the server URL and stream key exactly as provided for the event, and follow the current FFmpeg documentation for the relevant input demuxer, output muxer, and options. Do not paste a real key into a public command example or shared script. Depending on the URL format YouTube supplies, the key may be appended as part of the destination; keep the complete destination private. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and verify options with the FFmpeg version installed on the Pi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the command while watching its console output for input errors, timestamp problems, encoding overload, or connection failures.
  2. Wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview to appear and confirm stream health before making the event public or relying on it.
  3. Watch a representative passage with motion and audio. Confirm that video, sound, and the intended loop transition are present.
  4. For a long run, monitor the Pi, network, FFmpeg process, and YouTube stream health. A loop setting does not itself restart FFmpeg after a crash or restore a connection YouTube drops.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg does not recognize the loop option or playlist input The installed FFmpeg version/build or input demuxer differs from the command’s assumptions. Check ffmpeg -version and the installed build’s help and documentation. Confirm the playlist format and place input options before the input they configure.
YouTube does not receive a stream Wrong event URL or key, incorrect destination formatting, unavailable ingest protocol, or a network problem. Copy the current server URL and key from the event in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and check that the selected RTMP/RTMPS destination and network are available.
Video or audio is missing, or the playlist stops at a file boundary Files may have incompatible streams, timestamps, paths, or playlist syntax. Check each entry and file independently, verify the concat/demuxer syntax for the installed FFmpeg build, and inspect stream layouts. Transcode if stream copying cannot produce a compatible continuous output.
Frames drop, output stutters, or the Pi falls behind The workload may exceed the specific Pi’s real-time encoding capacity, or the connection may not sustain the bitrate. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube stream health. Test with a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that still suits the source, and determine whether encoding load or upload stability is the bottleneck.
YouTube reports poor stream health Bitrate may be too high for the connection or output settings may not follow YouTube’s current recommendations. Compare the chosen codec/resolution/frame-rate combination with YouTube’s encoder guide, test upload capacity with headroom, and run another private or test broadcast before depending on the setup.
The broadcast ends after a disconnect or process failure -stream_loop -1 loops the input; it is not process supervision or automatic reconnection. Check whether FFmpeg is still running and whether YouTube still accepts the event connection. Restart or supervise the process using an approach suitable for your system, and verify recovery in Live Control Room.
The key appears in logs, shell history, or a shared file The event credential has been exposed. Reset the stream key in Live Control Room, replace it in the protected encoder configuration, and avoid publishing it again.

Copyright, reused content, and archive planning

Only stream media you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music and other material embedded in a video. A live format does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube’s platform checks and monetization decisions can depend on the material and channel; looping the same files is not a guarantee of monetization or uninterrupted availability. Review YouTube’s current rules for your use case before scheduling a long broadcast.

For archive expectations, YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer session will become one complete archive, so save or record source files separately if you need a dependable copy.

DIY costs and practical limits

The Pi route requires hardware, storage, power, and a reliable network connection, but the cited sources do not establish a required model or a particular cost. It can be useful if the Pi and media are already available and you can validate the workload. It also leaves you responsible for keeping the device, FFmpeg process, and home connection operating; no cited Pi-specific benchmark guarantees a resolution or frame rate.
