The method works most cleanly when the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; test an unlisted stream before making it public.
What you need before you start
- A computer that can run an FFmpeg build with the encoders and protocols used by your command.
- The MP4 files stored locally, with enough free disk space and a stable upload connection capable of sustaining the selected bitrate.
- A YouTube Live stream configured for encoder input, including its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to create a stream and obtain these details.
- Permission to stream every video and audio track in the playlist. A live broadcast is not exempt from copyright rules; use material you own or are licensed to stream and review YouTube’s applicable policies before broadcasting.
Keep the stream key private: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.

Prepare the playlist in the order viewers should see it
Create a UTF-8 text file named playlist.txt in the folder containing the MP4 files. Put one file directive on each line, in the exact playback order:

file 'video-03.mp4'The ffconcat version 1.0 header must be the first line, exactly as shown, for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Use paths relative to the list file or provide full paths. Filenames with apostrophes, backslashes, or other special characters need escaping according to FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer syntax; see the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation. Do not rely on the order returned by a file browser or directory listing—review the list yourself.

Check whether the MP4 files can be concatenated directly
The concat demuxer joins encoded packets rather than decoding and rebuilding every video. It expects the files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in stream layout, codec, time base, or duration metadata can lead to errors, gaps, or artifacts at file boundaries. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps between files; unequal audio and video stream durations can also produce gaps.

If the files are unlike one another, normalize them to consistent streams or use a decoding-and-encoding workflow rather than assuming the concat command will repair them. Check a short test across every file boundary before relying on the playlist.

Get the YouTube ingest destination
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream configured for encoder input.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder connection instructions and live-stream management guidance.
- Use the exact ingest address and key format YouTube provides. Do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, or shared log; reset the key if it is compromised.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and supported video and audio codec options. Confirm the account’s current ingest settings and that your FFmpeg build supports your selected protocol and encoders.
Run FFmpeg and loop the playlist
From the directory containing playlist.txt, use this command shape, replacing the destination with the exact YouTube server URL and key:

It is commonly used when sending file input to a live output.-stream_loop -1repeats the next input indefinitely. It must appear before-i playlist.txt, because it applies to that input.-f concat -i playlist.txttells FFmpeg to read the ordered concat-demuxer list.-safe 0allows paths that FFmpeg’s safe-path checks might otherwise reject; use it only with a playlist you trust.-c:v libx264and the audio options encode H.264 video and AAC audio. Confirm the protocol/container combination against YouTube’s current ingest workflow.
This is an illustrative command, not a tested universal preset. The example does not set a video bitrate, so choose one that matches the output resolution and frame rate and that your upload can sustain. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are mode-specific recommendations, not universal values. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Check its current encoder settings table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use.
For example, if you choose the 1080p 30 fps H.264 recommendation, add -b:v 10M -minrate 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M before the output destination to configure a constant-rate target in an FFmpeg/libx264 workflow. Verify the resulting output and YouTube’s current guidance; bitrate controls and encoder behavior can vary. Do not use that example unchanged for a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

Test the feed before going public
- Start with a private or unlisted event, or another test setup suitable for your channel.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and check that the picture and audio are present.
- Watch transitions between files, including the end of the last file and the restart at the first. Look for pauses, black frames, missing audio, or audio and video drifting apart.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings, then adjust the source compatibility or output settings before starting the public event.
- Monitor the process and the upload connection during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
Keep a long-running FFmpeg stream reliable
The command loops media, but it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. For an unattended stream, plan for the computer and network to remain available, the source files and playlist to stay on disk, and the process to be monitored or restarted if it exits. Reconnect behavior depends on the FFmpeg build, command, network, and YouTube settings; YouTube’s live settings include latency and auto-start/stop options, so check what is enabled for your stream in its management settings.
YouTube’s encoder setup article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check current platform behavior for longer events and any archive requirement you have; do not assume an indefinitely running stream will produce one complete archive.

Troubleshooting common problems
