How to Loop a Fireplace Video in FFmpeg Without Black Frames

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To repeat a fireplace clip for a fixed-length file, put FFmpeg’s input-level -stream_loop -1 before the input and limit the output with -t:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -c copy looped.mp4

This repeats the whole input for one hour without re-encoding. It does not remove a black frame already present at the start or end, or make mismatched images meet seamlessly. Those problems require inspecting and, if needed, editing the source.

First decide what “no black frames” means

A black flash at a loop boundary can have different causes, and repeating the clip does not fix all of them.

  • The source contains black at an endpoint. The loop repeats that frame. Inspect the first and last frames; trim or rebuild the source if either endpoint is unwanted.
  • The beginning and ending images do not match. This creates a visible jump even if neither frame is black. A seamless loop needs footage with compatible endpoints or an edited transition.
  • The picture freezes or there is a gap. Check the video and audio endpoints and durations, along with timestamps. If audio runs longer than video, the picture may hold on its final frame at the repeat boundary.

A black gap and a black image are not necessarily the same problem. Review the decoded video at the boundary before changing frame rate or adding timestamp flags.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Repeat the whole clip for a fixed-duration file

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -c copy looped.mp4
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. Because it is an input option, place it before the corresponding -i.
  • -t 01:00:00 limits the output to one hour; change that duration to suit your file.
  • -c copy copies the encoded streams rather than re-encoding them. It cannot alter or remove frames, and it works only when the input streams and output container are compatible.

Preview the output around a join before using it. The command repeats the source; it does not verify that your specific file has clean endpoints or that its streams and container are suitable.

Inspect and fix the loop boundary

If an endpoint is black

Inspect the source’s first and last frames. If either contains black that should not be there, trim or edit the source and produce a new file. A loop option cannot remove content already encoded in the input.

If the boundary jumps but is not black

Compare the last image with the first. A visual mismatch is a seam, not a black-frame problem. You can choose footage whose endpoints fit together, trim to a better boundary, or edit a transition. A crossfade is not automatically the right fix: it may soften a mismatch but can also produce a brightness dip or ghosted flame pattern. Preview any transition before keeping it.

If you need frame-level processing

FFmpeg’s video loop filter repeats decoded frames. Its size option controls how many frames are buffered, and start selects where the repeated section begins. Set them for the section you want to repeat; the filter is not an automatic black-frame detector. Since filtering requires decoded media and an encoded output, this is a processing and re-encoding workflow rather than a stream-copy shortcut. See the FFmpeg filter documentation for the filter’s options.

If the boundary needs an edit

Trimming or adding a transition changes the media, so use a filter workflow and re-encode the result. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends its concat filter when re-encoding is needed; that guidance concerns concatenating video, not automatic repair of a fireplace loop. Review the edited boundary in the encoded output. See the FFmpeg FAQ.

Check audio and timing

  • For a silent fireplace video: use -an to omit audio, so an unrelated or longer audio stream does not affect the output’s duration or apparent behavior.
  • For a clip with sound: inspect audio and video durations and decide how each should repeat or end. Map the streams deliberately if needed. FFmpeg’s separate-audio looping example uses -shortest to end when the shorter selected input ends; that may not match every desired loop.
  • For a freeze or gap: inspect the encoded video at the join and check timestamps and stream durations before changing frame-rate or timestamp settings. Avoid applying flags blindly.

A video loop and its audio loop may need different handling. Confirm the result by reviewing the actual output across a repeat boundary.

File loop or continuous live broadcast?

The command above creates a finite file. Broadcasting continuously is a different setup: the destination protocol, ingest settings, and target service determine the output command. FFmpeg can write to a file, pipe, or network stream, but there is no single live-stream command that is correct for every platform. Use the ingest settings supplied by your streaming service and verify the result there.

Common problems and fixes

What you see Likely cause What to check or change
A black flash at every repeat A black frame is already at the source’s beginning or end. Inspect both endpoint frames, then trim or rebuild the source if necessary.
A visible jump, but no black frame The first and last images do not match. Choose a better loop boundary or preview an edited transition.
The picture freezes at the join Video and audio durations or endpoints may differ. Inspect both streams and their durations; omit audio if the output should be silent.
The command fails with stream copy The copied streams may not be compatible with the output container. Confirm compatibility. If the boundary must be edited or filtered, use a re-encoding workflow.
A live destination does not accept the output The command may not match the service’s ingest protocol or settings. Use the destination’s specified ingest settings and verify the broadcast there.

Or let it run in the cloud
