How to Loop a 10-Hour Rain Video in OBS for YouTube Live

Add the rain file as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, connect your YouTube stream key, test the feed, and make a local recording backup.

To loop a 10-hour rain video in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, open that source’s properties, and enable Loop. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then test the picture, audio, and stream health before going live. YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but keep a local recording as backup.

Set up the rain video as a looping Media Source

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, select or create the scene you want to use. In the Sources dock, click the + button and choose Media Source. Select the local 10-hour rain video file. OBS documents Media Source as its built-in source for media files (OBS Project: Media Sources).
  2. Turn on Loop. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. The option makes the file play again after playback completes; it restarts the video rather than extending or changing the file itself (OBS Project: Media Sources).
  3. Check the scene. Fit or position the source so it fills the canvas as intended. If the clip has rain audio, watch the OBS audio mixer while it plays and confirm the meter responds. Check that the intended audio is included in the scene and that no unwanted microphone or desktop audio is being captured. OBS recommends checking mixer meters and testing settings before streaming (OBS Quick Start Guide).

For one video, Media Source is the simplest choice because it has the relevant Loop setting. If you specifically want several clips to play as a playlist, OBS also documents VLC Video with a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; a playlist source is unnecessary for a single file (OBS Project: Media Sources).

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings, or select YouTube as the service if you are using OBS’s integrated option. YouTube’s stream key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it, so treat it as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the stream (YouTube Help: Set up your encoder).
  3. Start with a private or unlisted test where practical. Check the Live Control Room preview, audio, video, and stream-health messages before making the broadcast public. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes; YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health (OBS Quick Start Guide; YouTube Help: Use an encoder for live streaming).

Choose resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain

For a mostly static rain scene, 720p30 or 1080p30 can both be reasonable starting choices if they match the source quality and your available upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance for H.264 lists these recommended ranges: 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. They are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain a broadcast (YouTube Help: Use an encoder for live streaming; guidance checked October 3, 2026).

Output choice YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate When it may fit
720p, 30 fps 3–8 Mbps When lower upload demand is useful or the source does not benefit from 1080p.
1080p, 30 fps 5–14 Mbps When the source has enough detail and your connection can support the higher output reliably.

For the listed RTMP/RTMPS setup, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Run an upload speed test and leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the stream bitrate. A speed test is only a snapshot, so test the actual OBS feed and monitor stream health before relying on it for a long broadcast (YouTube Help: Use an encoder for live streaming; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues; guidance checked October 3, 2026).

Keep a local recording and check the video’s rights

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It also warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all, and recommends making a local archive. A planned 10-hour stream is below that stated threshold, but archive behavior is not a substitute for a backup: enable OBS local recording if the saved video matters and confirm the recording file is growing during the broadcast (YouTube Help: Archive live streams; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues; guidance checked October 3, 2026).

Make sure you have the rights or permission to use both the rain video and its audio in a YouTube livestream. A video that is freely available to watch or download is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast; OBS and YouTube setup instructions cannot establish your rights to a particular recording.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video plays once and stops: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked for that source. The loop behavior applies to the media file in the scene.
  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Check that OBS has the correct YouTube service or stream URL and the current stream key from the selected Live Control Room stream. Keep the key private. Review the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before restarting the broadcast.
  • The preview has no rain sound: Check that the file actually contains audio, then watch the OBS mixer meter during playback. Verify the desired source is routed to stream audio and that it is not muted.
  • The image is cropped, too small, or positioned incorrectly: Adjust the Media Source within the OBS scene and verify the framing in the YouTube preview before going live.
  • YouTube reports connection or stream-health issues: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level your connection can sustain, use the recommended CBR and keyframe settings, and retest. Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to your measured upload speed.
  • The local archive is missing or incomplete: Do not rely solely on YouTube’s automatic archive. Start OBS local recording and check during the stream that its file is being written and growing.
