Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To log out, open the app or website’s profile or account menu and choose Sign out or Log out. The exact steps depend on the service and where you’re using it: some mobile apps require you to remove an account from the device, while some providers let you end a session remotely.
Start by identifying where you’re signed in
Before choosing an option, identify both the service (such as Gmail, Apple Account, or Microsoft 365) and where it is open: a website, mobile app, desktop app, browser profile, or device settings. These can represent separate sessions. Signing out of a website, for example, does not necessarily sign you out of the browser profile used to access it.

- Website or desktop app: Look for your profile image, initials, or account menu, then choose Sign out or Log out.
- Mobile app: Check its account menu. If there is no sign-out control, the service may require removing the account from the device.
- Lost or unavailable device: Check the service provider’s security settings for a way to end that device’s sessions remotely.
How to log out of Gmail and Google
On a computer
- Open Gmail.
- Click your profile image.
- Click Sign out. Google’s instructions are at Sign out of Gmail.
In the Gmail mobile app
The Gmail app does not offer a separate sign-out action. Instead, remove the Google Account from the device. This removes it from Google apps on that device; on iOS, Google says this also signs you out of other Google apps on the device. Removing the account does not delete it, and you can still use it on another device. Follow Google’s platform-specific steps at Sign out of Gmail.

End a Google session remotely
- Open your Google Account and go to Security.
- Under your devices, select Manage all devices.
- Choose the device or session and select Sign out.
- Check the list for other sessions associated with that device. Google notes that a device can have more than one session; sign out of each one if you need to end access across all of them.
See Google’s guidance on managing devices with account access.

Signing out of a website is different from signing out of a browser
A website session and a browser profile are separate. For example, signing out of Gmail ends that Google service session; Chrome has its own sign-out control. If you need to end both, use the relevant account controls for each rather than assuming one action covers the other. Google documents how to sign out of Chrome separately.
Before signing out of an Apple Account
Signing out of an Apple Account on an Apple device also signs you out of iCloud and related services. Apple says your data remains in iCloud, but local data may be removed from the device unless you choose to keep a copy when prompted. Before proceeding, review which iCloud data and services are enabled, confirm recent changes have synced, and decide whether to keep a local copy. Apple explains the process in how to sign out of an Apple Account.

Sign out of Microsoft 365 or Office
The steps depend on whether you’re using Office on the web, a desktop app, or a mobile app. In Office on the web, select your profile image or initials and choose Sign Out. For desktop and mobile apps, use the account menu in the app and follow Microsoft’s instructions for that platform at signing out of Office.

What each sign-out option changes
| Action | What it affects | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Sign out in an app or website | Typically ends that service’s session on the current app or site. | Other sessions, a browser profile, or the device account may remain signed in. |
| Remove an account from a device | Removes the locally connected account from that device and may sign it out of related apps. | This is not the same as deleting the account. Check whether synced or local data is affected. |
| Sign out of a browser profile | Affects the browser’s account profile, separately from a website session. | Use this when you need to change or end the browser-level sign-in too. |
| End a session remotely | Revokes access for a selected device session through the provider’s security settings. | Check for multiple sessions. Completion timing varies; Microsoft’s Office remote process can take up to 72 hours to be detected. |
If you can’t find a sign-out option
- Open the profile, account, or settings menu and look for Sign out, Log out, or a device/account management option.
- Check the service’s instructions for your specific platform. A mobile app may handle sign-out differently from its website.
- If the device is unavailable, use the provider’s security or device-session settings if offered.
- For accounts connected to device services or syncing, check what will happen to local copies and linked services before removing the account.
There is no single procedure that works for every app, account, or device. For exact button-by-button steps, use the support instructions for the named service and platform.
