How to Log In With a Non-Root User Using PuTTY

Connect to a Linux server in PuTTY with the correct non-root username, password or SSH key. This guide covers auto-login usernames, key permissions and troubleshooting.

To log in to Linux with PuTTY as a normal (non-root) user, connect to the server over SSH, then enter the remote account’s username and its password or SSH key. In PuTTY, you can type the username at the login as: prompt or prefill it at Connection > Data > Auto-login username. The username is the Linux account on the server—not your Windows username and not automatically root.

If you enter the wrong account name, close that PuTTY window and start a new session before trying again. For key-based access, place the public key in the target user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file and select the matching private key in PuTTY.

What “non-root login” means in PuTTY

PuTTY does not choose a Linux account for you. It opens an SSH connection to a host, and the SSH server asks which account should authenticate. A non-root login simply means you provide an ordinary server-side account such as alex, deploy or another name supplied by the administrator instead of root.

The account must already exist on the remote Linux or Unix system and be allowed to use SSH. PuTTY only presents the connection and authentication prompts; it cannot create the account, grant permissions or override the server’s SSH policy.

After a successful login, your shell runs with that account’s permissions. You can perform administrative work only through the privilege-escalation method approved on that server, commonly sudo. Whether a particular command is permitted depends on the operating system’s policy and the account’s configuration.

Information to have before opening PuTTY

Ask the server administrator for all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The server’s DNS hostname or IP address.
  • The SSH port. Port 22 is normal, but the administrator may use another port.
  • The exact non-root username, including capitalization where the server treats names as case-sensitive.
  • Either the password for that account or an approved private key and any passphrase protecting it.
  • The organization’s procedure for verifying a server host key the first time you connect.

A Windows login, email address or local computer account is not a substitute for the remote username. SSH authenticates the account on the server you entered in PuTTY.

Connect with a password

1. Start a new SSH session

  1. Open PuTTY.
  2. On the Session screen, enter the server hostname or IP address in Host Name (or IP address).
  3. Enter the supplied SSH port. Leave the connection type set to SSH.
  4. Choose Open to start the connection.

PuTTY may display a host-key warning the first time it sees that server. Verify the fingerprint using your organization’s approved record or administrator instructions before accepting it. Do not accept an unexpected key merely to make the prompt disappear; a changed key can indicate a rebuilt server, a legitimate infrastructure change or a security problem that needs investigation.

2. Supply the non-root username

When the terminal displays login as:, type the exact server-side account name and press Enter. For example, if the administrator created the account alex, enter alex, not root and not the name of your Windows account.

PuTTY’s official getting-started guidance warns that a mistyped SSH username may not be correctable in the same attempt. Many SSH servers do not allow a second login attempt using a different username after you press Return. The safest recovery is to close the PuTTY window, open a new session and enter the correct name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Enter the account password

At the password prompt, type the password belonging to the non-root account and press Enter. PuTTY does not display characters, asterisks or cursor movement while you type; that is normal. If authentication succeeds, the server presents the account’s shell prompt.

A root password will not authenticate you as another account, and a Windows password is unrelated unless the server is specifically integrated with an identity system that the administrator has described.

Prefill the username in PuTTY

If you regularly connect as the same account, PuTTY can send the username automatically:

  1. Open PuTTY and select the saved session, or configure the host and port on the Session screen.
  2. In the category tree, open Connection > Data.
  3. Enter the remote Linux username in Auto-login username.
  4. Return to Session and choose Save if you want this value stored with the session.
  5. Choose Open. PuTTY will submit that username instead of waiting at login as:.

Auto-login is a convenience setting, not a permission change. It does not create the account or make it root. Check the saved value when copying a session for another server: a stale username can send you to the wrong account, and a wrong value may require restarting the connection.

Password versus public-key authentication

Both methods authenticate the remote account. The practical differences are setup, daily use and recovery.

Aspect Password Public key
Initial setup The administrator enables the account and gives you its password. The administrator (or an authorized user) installs your public key in the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys; you keep the matching private key.
PuTTY action Enter the username, then type the account password at the prompt. Select the private key in PuTTY, or load it into Pageant, then enter the username. A key passphrase may be requested locally.
Operational security Protection depends on password strength, secrecy and the server’s password policy. The private key is not sent to the server. Protect it and its passphrase; anyone who obtains an unprotected private key may be able to authenticate.
Key or credential management Passwords can be rotated or reset by the server administrator. Keys must be tracked, replaced and removed per account. A key is valid only where its public counterpart is installed.
Recovery Use the administrator’s password-reset or account-recovery process. Use another authorized login or the administrator’s console access to install a replacement public key. Losing the only private key can lock you out.

Use the method required by the server. Do not convert a key into a password or copy a private key to the server. Keep private keys protected on the computer where PuTTY uses them.

Set up public-key login for a non-root account

1. Generate or obtain the key pair

PuTTY’s key utility, PuTTYgen, creates a public/private key pair. The private key stays with you. The public key is the text that the server stores for the account. If an administrator has already supplied a key pair, use the approved private key and obtain the corresponding public-key text through the administrator’s process.

2. Install the public key for the correct user

On the server, append the public-key text to the target user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. The file belongs to that user and is separate from root’s file. A key installed in /root/.ssh/authorized_keys does not authorize the same key for alex.

Keep each key entry on one line. Do not insert line breaks in the middle of the key, add quotation marks or paste the private key. If an administrator performs the installation, provide only the public-key text through the approved channel.

3. Tell PuTTY which private key to use

  1. Open the PuTTY session configuration.
  2. In the category tree, go to Connection > SSH > Auth (the exact wording can vary slightly by PuTTY release).
  3. Use the private-key file selector to choose the matching private key.
  4. Return to Session, save the session if appropriate, and connect.

You can also load the key into Pageant, PuTTY’s authentication agent, so sessions can use it without repeatedly selecting the file. Command-line PuTTY tools support an identity-file option; use the private key that matches the public key installed for the account.

Fix key-permission problems

OpenSSH may ignore an otherwise correct key when the home directory, .ssh directory or key file is writable by other users. The PuTTY manual gives this typical adjustment:

chmod go-w $HOME $HOME/.ssh $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys

That command removes group and world write permission from the listed paths. Before changing permissions, confirm that the paths belong to the intended account and follow the server administrator’s policy. Ownership matters as well: an authorized_keys file owned by the wrong user can be rejected or create a security issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not blindly apply recursive permission changes to an entire home directory. Preserve any organization-specific access-control requirements and ask an administrator if you do not have a separate, authorized way to repair the account.

What to do after a successful non-root login

Confirm which account and host you reached before running commands. Common shell checks include:

  • whoami to display the effective username.
  • hostname to identify the server.
  • pwd to show the current directory.

These commands do not grant privileges; they help prevent work on the wrong account or machine. A non-root shell remains constrained by that account’s permissions. For an administrative task, use the server’s approved command, commonly sudo command, and provide any required authentication. If the account is not authorized, stop and ask the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

Troubleshooting PuTTY non-root logins

PuTTY shows the wrong account at login as:

Close the connection and start a fresh PuTTY session. Enter the exact remote username supplied by the administrator. If you saved an auto-login username, revisit Connection > Data and correct it before reconnecting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server rejects the password

Check that:

  • The account exists on this server and is spelled correctly.
  • The account is permitted to log in through SSH; some organizations disable SSH for selected users.
  • You are entering the non-root account’s password, not a root password or Windows password.
  • Caps Lock, keyboard layout and accidental leading or trailing spaces are not changing what you type.
  • You are connecting to the intended host and port.

Account existence, SSH access rules, lockout status and password policy are server-side matters. PuTTY cannot confirm or change them. Ask the administrator to inspect the server’s authentication logs if the credentials are known to be correct.

The message says “Server refused our key”

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that the private key selected in PuTTY corresponds to the public key in the target user’s authorized_keys.
  2. Make sure the public key is complete and remains on one line.
  3. Verify that it is installed under the target user’s home directory, not under root or another account.
  4. Check ownership and permissions on the home directory, .ssh directory and authorized_keys file.
  5. Confirm that the server permits public-key authentication for this account.
  6. Ask an administrator to review the SSH server log for the precise rejection reason.

A key can work for one account and fail for another because authorization is per user. Install the public key in each account that is intentionally allowed to use it, and connect with that account’s username.

The host-key warning appears again

A repeated warning can result from a changed server, a rebuilt instance, a different hostname or a changed network destination. Verify the new fingerprint with the administrator before replacing a stored host key. If nobody expects a change, do not proceed until the discrepancy is explained.

The connection times out or is refused

Recheck the hostname or IP address and SSH port. Confirm that the server is running, reachable from your network and accepting SSH connections through its firewall. A timeout occurs before username authentication, so changing the non-root username will not fix a blocked route or closed port. Have the administrator verify the service and network rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interactive username entry or saved username?

Choice Best when Trade-off
Type the username at login as: You use several accounts, share a workstation or want to verify the account every time. One extra prompt, with less risk of silently reusing a stale account name.
Save Auto-login username A dedicated session always connects to the same host and account. Faster connections, but a copied or outdated session can submit the wrong username automatically.

Regardless of the choice, the server decides whether that account may authenticate. A saved username does not store or reveal a password and does not elevate privileges.

Safe operating habits

  • Use the least-privileged account that can complete the task.
  • Verify the host key through a trusted administrative record before accepting a new key.
  • Keep private key files private and protect them with a passphrase where policy permits.
  • Do not paste private-key material into authorized_keys; only the public-key text belongs there.
  • Use separate PuTTY saved sessions for different hosts or accounts, with clear names.
  • Review the auto-login username before connecting to a copied session.
  • Close the session when finished, especially on a shared computer.
  • Use approved sudo rules for administration instead of logging in as root when the organization has provided a non-root workflow.

Quick procedure checklist

  1. Obtain the host, SSH port, non-root username and approved password or private key.
  2. Open PuTTY, enter the host and port, select SSH and choose Open.
  3. Verify the host key according to your organization’s procedure.
  4. Enter the remote account name at login as:, or prefill it at Connection > Data > Auto-login username.
  5. Authenticate with that account’s password or its matching private key.
  6. If the username was wrong, close PuTTY and reconnect rather than trying a second name in the same attempt.
  7. After login, verify the account and host, then use approved privilege escalation for administrative commands.
