If the page loops, rejects valid details, reports blocked cookies, or returns a 404, use the least-invasive fix that matches the symptom: verify the address and credentials, repair browser cookies, identify a deliberately hidden login URL, check HTTP/HTTPS and site-URL settings, then isolate plugins, themes, firewalls, or hosting rules.

Which WordPress login URL should you use?
The standard endpoint is the wp-login.php file in the root of the WordPress site. The official WordPress Developer Resources handbook describes it this way: “The WordPress login page is located at wp-login.php in your site’s root directory.” Replace your-domain.example with the domain visitors use for the site and use HTTPS when the site is configured for it.

Do not add a second domain, an old staging address, or a different protocol simply because it appears in a bookmark. A mismatch between the address you type and the address WordPress is configured to use can create redirects, cookie failures, or repeated login screens.

Sign in through the normal form
- Open the site’s login page. Enter the full
/wp-login.phpaddress in the browser, or open/wp-admin/and allow WordPress to redirect you. - Enter an account identifier. The username works, and WordPress also accepts the email address associated with that account.
- Enter the password exactly. Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive. Remove any spaces copied before or after either value; a password manager can sometimes paste an unintended trailing space.
- Submit the form once. If the dashboard opens, use its normal navigation rather than repeatedly refreshing the login endpoint.
- Use “Lost your password?” only when the mailbox is usable. The link starts WordPress’s standard email reset flow. It succeeds only if the account email is accessible and the site can deliver the reset message.
If the form reloads without a useful error, or the browser immediately displays the same form again, treat that as a cookie or URL-consistency problem rather than assuming the password is wrong.
Match the symptom to the least-invasive recovery path

Fix a rejected login before changing the site
Confirm the address
Read the domain letter by letter and check that the browser shows the expected HTTPS connection. A bookmark can preserve an obsolete domain, a staging hostname, or an old protocol. Type the standard endpoint manually once: /wp-login.php. If that works while your bookmark does not, replace the bookmark rather than changing WordPress settings.
Check the account identifier and password
Try the account username and then the email address attached to that account. Both fields are case-sensitive. Re-type the values instead of relying on copied text, and inspect for invisible spaces. If another administrator can sign in, ask them to confirm which email address is attached to your user account; do not create a second account merely to work around a mistyped identifier.
Use password recovery only when mail delivery is viable
Select “Lost your password?” and enter the username or account email. Check the mailbox’s spam and quarantine folders, but remember that a message will not arrive if the address is inaccessible or the site’s mail delivery is failing. In that situation, repeated reset requests do not repair the underlying problem; an administrator or hosting provider must restore access to the account or mail system.

Repair cookie and cache failures
WordPress authenticates a successful session with browser cookies. It also uses a test cookie while processing the login form. If the browser cannot write or return those cookies, the page may claim that cookies are blocked, or it may send you back to the login form immediately.
- Allow cookies for the site. In the browser’s privacy or site-permission panel, enable cookies for the WordPress domain. If a strict privacy mode, extension, or enterprise policy blocks them, temporarily permit the site and retry.
- Clear only the affected site first. Delete the domain’s cookies and cached files rather than wiping every saved session. Close the login tab after clearing them.
- Open a private window. Visit the same
/wp-login.phpaddress in a private or incognito window. This provides a quick test without old cookies and most extensions’ stored state. - Try a second browser. A successful login elsewhere points to a local browser setting, extension, or corrupted cache rather than a WordPress account failure.
- Retest after changing one thing. If the private window works, re-enable extensions or stricter privacy settings one at a time until the conflicting setting is identified.
Do not disable cookies globally as a permanent solution. WordPress needs authentication cookies to keep the session active, and allowing them only for the site limits the change.

What a 404 login page means
First rule out a wrong domain or path
Confirm that the request reaches the intended site and that you used the exact spelling wp-login.php. A 404 on one hostname but not another usually indicates a domain, DNS, proxy, or virtual-host issue rather than a missing WordPress feature.
Check for a deliberately hidden login slug
Security plugins can replace the public login path to reduce automated requests. When that feature is enabled, both /wp-login.php and a logged-out visit to /wp-admin/ may intentionally return 404. The absence of a login form in this case is expected behavior, not proof that WordPress files were deleted.

Ask the site administrator for the custom slug configured by the security plugin. If you administer the site but cannot recall it, use the host’s file manager or SFTP/FTP to inspect the installed security plugin’s documentation and settings. Preserve a backup and avoid deleting the plugin or editing its files blindly; an incorrect change can lock out every administrator.
Stop redirect loops by making the site URLs consistent
A login loop often occurs when different layers disagree about the site’s canonical address. WordPress stores a “home” URL and a “site URL” in the database, while wp-config.php, a reverse proxy, CDN, web server, or hosting control panel may impose additional redirects. Problems arise when one layer uses HTTP and another uses HTTPS, or when one uses www and another uses the bare domain.

- Choose the single hostname visitors should use, including whether it begins with
https://. - Compare that choice with the address in the browser, the hosting panel, and any proxy or CDN configuration.
- Look for a redirect that alternates between HTTP and HTTPS or between two hostnames. The browser’s developer tools or redirect history can reveal the two competing destinations.
Temporarily force the expected URLs in wp-config.php
When dashboard access is unavailable, the WordPress handbook documents forcing the expected values in the configuration file while troubleshooting. Place the following definitions above the line that says WordPress will stop editing, replacing the example with the site’s actual canonical HTTPS address:

define('WP_SITEURL', 'https://your-domain.example');Back up wp-config.php before editing it, preserve the existing quote and semicolon syntax, and do not add a second conflicting definition. These constants are a diagnostic measure: once the database and hosting configuration agree, remove temporary overrides if your maintenance plan requires the values to be managed elsewhere.

Correct database values carefully
If the stored home and siteurl values are wrong, an administrator may need to correct them in the WordPress settings or database. Back up the database first. A search-and-replace operation must account for serialized WordPress data; a blind text replacement can corrupt options and make the site harder to recover. If you cannot verify the procedure, ask the host or a WordPress specialist to perform it.
Test plugins and themes without dashboard access
A plugin or active theme can intercept login requests, set incompatible cookies, rewrite URLs, or produce a fatal error. Isolate the cause without deleting anything.
Temporarily disable all plugins
- Create or verify a current site and database backup.
- Open the host’s file manager or connect with SFTP/FTP.
- Open the WordPress
wp-contentdirectory. - Rename the
pluginsdirectory to a temporary name such asplugins.disabled. Renaming changes the path without removing plugin files. - Retry
/wp-login.php. If access returns, restore the directory name toplugins. - From the dashboard, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing the login after each activation. The plugin activated immediately before the failure is the leading suspect.
Do not leave the directory renamed longer than necessary: the site may lose expected functionality while plugins are unavailable. Never delete plugin files as a first diagnostic step.
Test the active theme
If disabling plugins does not change the symptom and the problem began after a theme change, use the same file access to rename the active theme’s directory temporarily. WordPress can fall back to an available default theme. If the login works with the fallback, restore the original directory name and repair or replace the active theme before reactivating it. Keep a backup and avoid changing several themes or files at once, or you will lose the ability to identify the cause.
Check firewalls, proxies, caches, and hosting controls
When the browser never receives a normal WordPress response, the request may be stopped before PHP runs. A web application firewall, CDN rule, server cache, host-level security control, or redirect rule can block login POST requests, challenge the browser repeatedly, serve a stale 404, or rewrite the destination.
- Review recent changes to firewall, WAF, CDN, caching, SSL, or redirect settings.
- Purge a stale cache only after recording the current configuration, then test the login in a private window.
- Check whether the block affects only
/wp-login.phpor all site requests. - Ask the host or security administrator to check request logs for the time of a failed attempt and to allow legitimate administrator traffic.
Do not weaken a firewall permanently just to make the form appear. The goal is a rule that permits the expected login request while retaining protection for the rest of the site.
When to involve hosting or WordPress support
Escalate after the browser, URL, and plugin checks when the remaining work requires server, database, or file access. Provide a concise incident record:
- The exact login URL and canonical domain you intended to use.
- The visible symptom: rejected credentials, cookie warning, repeated form, redirect loop, 404, timeout, or blocked request.
- The time and time zone of a failed attempt.
- WordPress, PHP, and database versions, plus the browser and operating system.
- Whether the problem affects every administrator, every browser, or only one network.
- Recent changes to plugins, themes, HTTPS certificates, domains, DNS, CDN, firewall, or hosting.
- Whether you have a current file and database backup and whether SFTP/FTP or control-panel access is available.
WordPress or hosting support can then inspect server logs, database URL values, file permissions, proxy headers, and security rules without asking you to guess at destructive changes.
