The server must already contain the matching public key in the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. A correct conversion cannot compensate for a missing, incomplete, or incorrectly permissioned server-side public key.

What a PPK file is—and why Linux may reject it
PPK means PuTTY Private Key. It is the private-key format used by PuTTY and related tools. OpenSSH, which is the standard SSH client on most Linux systems, can require the key in an OpenSSH-compatible format instead. If you pass a PPK directly to OpenSSH, errors such as Invalid format or cannot load key are possible.
SSH authentication uses a key pair:
- The private key stays with you. The PPK is one representation of that private key.
- The matching public key is installed on the server account that you intend to use.
Both halves must match. A key authorized for alice does not automatically authorize a login as bob. The hostname, port, username, and account containing the public key must all describe the same destination.

PuTTY’s documentation states in its SSH credentials guidance: “This key must be in PuTTY’s native format (*.PPK).” If your actual login is from Linux, use the OpenSSH procedure below. The PuTTY workflow is useful when a Windows administrator created or currently manages the key.
Before you connect: verify the server-side public key
Conversion only changes the private-key file format. The server still needs the corresponding public-key line in the target account’s authorized_keys file. You need an existing way to log in—another key, a password temporarily enabled by an administrator, a console, or a provider’s recovery channel—to perform this setup.
Extract the OpenSSH public-key line
From the machine where the PPK is available, run:
puttygen keyfile.ppk -LCopy the complete OpenSSH public-key line produced by the command. Do not copy a PuTTY proprietary display, a fingerprint-only line, or a partial line. The public key is normally one long line; preserve its key type, encoded key data, and optional comment.
Install it for the intended account
Log in by the existing method, then create or edit the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and paste the complete line. Ensure that the file belongs to that account and that the home directory, .ssh directory, and authorized_keys path are not writable by unrelated users. PuTTY documentation records this hardening command:

chmod go-w $HOME $HOME/.ssh $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keysRun it in the target account’s home-directory context, or apply the equivalent ownership and permission corrections with your system’s administrative procedure. A public key in the wrong account, a truncated line, or an SSH path that the account cannot safely access commonly produces Permission denied (publickey).
Convert the PPK for OpenSSH on Linux
1. Install the PuTTY tools
On Debian- and Ubuntu-based systems, install the package that supplies puttygen:
sudo apt install putty-toolsOther Linux distributions use their own package manager and package naming. Install the distribution’s PuTTY tools package, then verify that the puttygen command is available. You do not need to install the complete PuTTY graphical client merely to perform this conversion.
2. Convert the private key
Run the documented conversion command, replacing the input and output paths as needed:

puttygen keyfile.ppk -O private-openssh -o ~/.ssh/keyfile-O private-openssh selects the OpenSSH private-key output format. The output is a new private-key file; keep the original PPK as a protected backup if you still need it for PuTTY. If the PPK has a passphrase, puttygen may ask for it during conversion, and the resulting key can remain passphrase-protected.
3. Protect the converted private key
Restrict the output so other local users cannot read it:

chmod 600 ~/.ssh/keyfileKeep the private key secret. Never paste it into a public issue, chat, ticket, shell transcript, website, or server configuration file. The public key is the part intended for authorized_keys; the private key is not.
4. Connect with OpenSSH
Use the username and hostname for the account where you installed the matching public key:

ssh -i ~/.ssh/keyfile [email protected]If SSH listens on a non-default port, add -p followed by that port:
ssh -p PORT -i ~/.ssh/keyfile [email protected]On the first connection, follow your organization’s normal host-verification procedure. A successful key exchange still depends on selecting the correct endpoint, port, and account.

A passphrase-protected private key is expected to prompt when OpenSSH needs it. An agent can hold the unlocked key so you do not repeatedly select the file or enter its passphrase for every connection. On Linux, that agent is commonly ssh-agent; on Windows with PuTTY, Pageant can load the PPK and provide agent authentication.
Agent use changes where authentication is performed, not which key the server authorizes. The server still checks the public key corresponding to the private key held by the agent. If you use agent forwarding for a second SSH hop, enable it only when the workflow requires it and understand that the subsequent host can request authentication through the forwarded agent.

Use the PPK directly in PuTTY
PuTTY can use the PPK without conversion. In the PuTTY session configuration, open the SSH authentication credentials panel and select the private key file. The username, hostname, and port must still point to the Linux account and SSH service where the matching public key is installed.
Load the PPK into Pageant
Pageant is PuTTY’s agent. Load the PPK into Pageant, complete its passphrase prompt, and PuTTY can request agent authentication for sessions without requiring you to select the file each time. Keep the agent running only as long as necessary and avoid loading keys that should not be available to every session using that agent.

Agent forwarding can make the local agent available to a subsequent SSH connection, such as an administrative hop through an intermediate server. It is not a general speed or compatibility setting. Enable it only for a specific, trusted workflow, because a compromised intermediate host may be able to request signatures from the forwarded agent while the forwarding session is active.
Diagnose common login failures

Use verbose output without exposing the private key
For a client-side view of which identity files and authentication methods are being attempted, add the verbose flag:
ssh -v -i ~/.ssh/keyfile [email protected]Verbose output can contain usernames, hostnames, and configuration details. Share it only with people who need it, and never include the private-key contents. The output helps distinguish a key-format problem on the client from an authorization or permission problem on the server.
A repeatable checklist
- Confirm that the file is a PuTTY PPK and that you know which server account it is intended to access.
- Extract the matching public-key line with
puttygen keyfile.ppk -L. - Using an existing administrative login, place the complete line in the target account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys. - Check account ownership and restrictive permissions on the home directory,
.ssh, andauthorized_keys; PuTTY documentschmod go-w $HOME $HOME/.ssh $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keysas a hardening step. - Install
putty-toolson Debian- or Ubuntu-based Linux systems, or the equivalent PuTTY tools package for your distribution. - Convert the PPK with
puttygen keyfile.ppk -O private-openssh -o ~/.ssh/keyfile. - Set the private-key file mode to
600and keep the file confidential. - Connect with
ssh -i ~/.ssh/keyfile [email protected], adding-p PORTwhen required. - If authentication fails, verify the account and endpoint first, then inspect client behavior with
ssh -vand recheck the server-side key line and permissions.
The essential distinction
There are two separate problems that are often mistaken for one. A PPK/OpenSSH format problem prevents the Linux client from loading the private key at all. A server authorization problem occurs after the client can use the key but the server cannot find or accept its matching public key for that account. Convert the file for OpenSSH, authorize the corresponding public key on the correct account, protect both the private key and SSH paths, and select the right host and port.
