FFmpeg writes diagnostic messages to stderr by default. For a VPS stream that should run continuously, capture that output through the service or process manager, or use FFmpeg’s report options when diagnosing a problem. Then check YouTube Live Control Room separately: a clean-looking FFmpeg log does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Choose how to capture FFmpeg output
There are two practical approaches. Use a service-managed log destination for routine operation, and create a more detailed FFmpeg report when you need to investigate a fault.
| Method | Best use | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
Capture the process’s stderr through your service or supervisor |
Routine logs for a long-running VPS process | Retrieval, persistence, rotation and retention depend on your VPS distribution and service manager. Verify where logs go, including after a restart. |
-report |
Detailed, one-off troubleshooting | Creates a timestamped report in the current directory and implies debug verbosity, so output can be much noisier and larger than routine logs. |
FFREPORT |
A report with a chosen filename and log level | Set an appropriate destination and retention plan. Confirm the report was created; report-configuration parsing errors are not fatal and do not appear in the report. |
Capture logs for a long-running VPS service
FFmpeg’s default logging destination is stderr. Configure the supervisor or service manager that launches FFmpeg to retain its standard error, or redirect it to a managed file. After deployment, check the actual destination and confirm that output is still captured after restarting the service.
The right commands for persistent service logs and log rotation vary by host, Linux distribution and service setup. Do not assume a particular systemd or journald configuration applies to your VPS; use the documentation for the environment you actually run. Whatever destination you choose, set and verify a retention policy so a continuous process does not fill the VPS disk.

Write an FFmpeg report file
Detailed report for a troubleshooting session
Add -report to the FFmpeg command:
ffmpeg -report -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
This illustrative command writes a timestamped report in the current directory, includes the full command line and log output, and enables debug-level verbosity. Replace the input, encoding options and destination with your actual configuration. Make sure the directory is writable and that report files have appropriate access controls and retention. Avoid sharing the report without checking it for sensitive connection details.
Choose a report filename and level with FFREPORT
To configure the report filename and set the documented numeric alias for info level, prefix the command with:

FFREPORT='file=ffreport.log:level=32' ffmpeg -i INPUT [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
FFmpeg’s report options use colon-separated key/value pairs. If a filename or another value contains special characters or delimiters, escape them according to the FFmpeg manual. The example uses a fixed filename for clarity; arrange suitable rotation or retention for recurring production use rather than assuming a report file will manage its own growth.
Set useful log verbosity and progress output
FFmpeg’s default log level is info. Its levels range from quiet through panic, fatal, error, warning, info, verbose, debug and trace. For example, the manual documents this form for adding level and time information:

-loglevel level+datetime+info
Keep routine logs readable, then increase verbosity or use -report during diagnosis. Because -report implies debug verbosity, leaving detailed reports running indefinitely can produce unnecessary output and disk use.
FFmpeg also provides progress signals. -stats logs encoding progress at info level and is enabled by default. -progress URL emits program-friendly progress information for a monitoring setup. These indicate activity inside FFmpeg; they do not confirm that YouTube has accepted, processed or distributed the stream.

Check YouTube’s stream health separately
- Get the ingest details from YouTube. In the YouTube encoder setup workflow, obtain the stream URL and key, then enter them in your encoder command or configuration. Treat the key as a secret: YouTube describes stream keys as both a stream’s password and address. Do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, support requests or shell history unnecessarily.
- Verify the encoder setup. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the ingest codec, resolution and frame rate you use; there is no single appropriate bitrate for every stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Test before relying on the stream. Match stream quality to the upload connection, run a speed test, and do a preflight with representative movement and audio. Monitor the stream’s health and messages while live. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers these checks.
- Read both sides when something goes wrong. Inspect the VPS-side FFmpeg output for input, encoding or connection problems. In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream health and its specific error messages and instructions. Use the two views together: local progress is not proof of healthy ingest. YouTube explains stream metrics in Live Control Room and stream health and error messages.
Common logging and stream problems
- No log file appears: FFmpeg normally writes to
stderr, not to a file automatically. Check that your service captures standard error, or that a report is enabled and its destination directory is writable. WithFFREPORT, verify that the intended report was actually created. - The report is unexpectedly huge or noisy:
-reportimplies debug verbosity. Use it for a diagnostic session, or configure an appropriate report level withFFREPORT; use managed retention for files that remain in use. - FFmpeg shows progress, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: Progress describes FFmpeg’s activity, not YouTube’s ingest health. Check the stream key and destination configuration, then follow the error message shown in Live Control Room.
- YouTube reports a quality or configuration problem: Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance for your specific protocol, codec, resolution and frame rate. Check CBR and the keyframe interval, and ensure the upload connection can sustain the selected quality.
- Logs stop being available after a restart: Check the service manager’s configured destination and persistence behavior for your actual host. Confirm capture after restarting instead of assuming that a previous log path is persistent.
- Disk usage keeps growing: Review report verbosity, file naming and the host’s rotation and retention settings. A continuous process needs a deliberate log lifecycle; FFmpeg’s report options do not replace host-specific file management.
Plan for a 24/7 broadcast and its archive
Logging the process does not determine how YouTube archives the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that statement guarantees one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived under the same condition. Plan the broadcast and any archive workflow with that limit in mind. Check YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of prerecorded video rather than managing FFmpeg on a VPS, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
