The exact menus vary by phone maker and Android version.
Choose the control that matches your goal
| Option | What it controls | Best fit | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-device parental controls | PIN-protected controls that restrict some device settings and can manage limits and filters | Setting boundaries for a child on an eligible device | Google’s current instructions require Android 17 or later; they restrict some settings, not necessarily the entire Settings app. The feature cannot be enabled on a device with multiple profiles. |
| Family Link | Parental management of a supervised child account across devices | Managing a child’s account and devices | It is not documented as a standalone Settings-app lock. |
| Screen lock | Access to the entire phone | Keeping others out when the device is locked | It does not lock Settings separately after the phone is unlocked. |
| App pinning | Keeps one selected app on screen until it is unpinned | A brief phone handoff for one task | It is temporary single-app access, not a persistent Settings lock. |
| Google Play content restrictions | Maturity-based limits on downloads or purchases | Restricting some Play content | They do not lock Settings or block all access to restricted content. |
Restrict settings for a child with on-device parental controls
On supported devices, Google’s on-device parental controls require Android 17 or later. Check the Android version first; if the menu is missing, your device may not meet the requirement or may organize settings differently. Google’s current guidance is available in Set up parental controls on an Android device.

- Open Settings > Parental controls.
- Set a parental-controls PIN of at least four digits. Google recommends adding a recovery account so the PIN can be reset.
- Choose and enable the controls available on your device.
While the controls are active, some device settings are restricted to help prevent a child from bypassing them. Google does not promise that all of Settings becomes inaccessible. The PIN applies to all users on the device, and the controls cannot be turned on when the device has multiple profiles, such as a work profile and private space. Available features can also include daily limits, downtime, app limits, blocked apps, web filters and app-store filters.
When Family Link is a better fit
For a child using a supervised Google Account, Google’s parental-controls guidance points to Family Link for managing parental controls across the child’s devices. It is an account- and device-management option, not a documented PIN lock for the Settings app itself.

Secure the whole phone with a screen lock
If your concern is someone opening the phone at all, set a screen lock. On many newer Android devices, the path is Settings > Security & privacy > Screen lock; wording can differ by manufacturer and version. Choose a PIN, pattern or password. Google recommends a six-digit PIN or longer for added security. See Create a screen lock for the official steps. This protects access to the device as a whole; after it is unlocked, it does not place a separate lock on Settings.
Use app pinning for a brief handoff
App pinning can keep someone in one chosen app while they borrow your phone. It is useful for a short task, not for permanently locking Settings.

Why Google Play content restrictions are not an app lock
Google Play content restrictions limit downloads or purchases according to maturity level. They do not lock Settings, and Google says restricted content may still appear in search results or be reached through a direct link. Use them for their narrower purpose, not as a general device lock. See How to set up content restrictions on Google Play.

Be cautious with third-party Settings-lock apps
Do not grant an unfamiliar app restricted settings or accessibility permissions just to try to lock Settings. Such permissions can expose sensitive information; Google recommends allowing restricted settings only when you trust the app’s developer. Read Learn about restricted settings before enabling them. A third-party app’s presence does not establish that it can securely prevent access to Android Settings.
Why your menu may look different
Android settings are organized differently across versions, and phone makers can change labels and paths. Google advises checking with the manufacturer when screen-lock or app-pinning options are missing. Its overview of these differences is Learn about Android security & privacy settings. For device-specific steps, identify the phone’s make, model and Android version.
