How to Lock, Sign Out, or Open Task Manager on a Chromebook

There is no all-purpose Ctrl + Alt + Delete command on Chromebook. Use the shortcut that matches your goal: lock the screen, sign out, or inspect Chrome tasks.

Chromebooks do not have a documented all-purpose Ctrl + Alt + Delete command. Choose the shortcut for the action you need: Search + L or Launcher + L locks the screen, Shift + Ctrl + Q twice signs out, and Shift + Esc opens Chrome Task Manager. These shortcuts do different things.

Which Chromebook shortcut do you need?

Goal Shortcut or route What it does
Lock the screen Search + L or Launcher + L Locks the screen while leaving your account signed in.
Sign out Shift + Ctrl + Q, then press the same combination again Signs out of your Google Account; it does not open Task Manager.
Inspect browser tasks Shift + Esc Opens Chrome Task Manager, where you can inspect browser tasks.
See Chromebook shortcuts Ctrl + Search + S, or Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs > View keyboard shortcuts Opens the Chromebook’s shortcut reference.

How do I lock my Chromebook with the keyboard?

Press Search + L or Launcher + L. This locks the screen, which is useful when you step away but want to remain signed in. You can also select the Lock command in the status area. Google lists the keyboard shortcut and lock option in its screen-lock instructions.

Using a Windows or Mac keyboard

For applicable Chromebook shortcuts, Google says a Windows keyboard’s Windows key or a Mac keyboard’s Command key can substitute for Search. To lock with an external keyboard, try Windows + L or Command + L. This substitution does not make Ctrl + Alt + Delete a Chromebook system command. See Google’s Chromebook keyboard shortcut list for the supported substitutions.

How do I sign out of a Chromebook?

Press Shift + Ctrl + Q, then press the same combination a second time. This signs you out; it is not a way to lock the screen or open a task manager. Google lists the sequence in its Chromebook keyboard shortcuts.

How do I open Task Manager on a Chromebook?

Press Shift + Esc to open Chrome Task Manager. It is a Chrome browser feature for inspecting browser tasks, not a ChromeOS security or system-management screen equivalent to Windows Ctrl + Alt + Delete. Google documents the shortcut in its Chrome keyboard shortcuts.

If one tab or browser task is stuck

Try Shift + Esc to inspect Chrome tasks. This is the relevant shortcut when the problem appears limited to the browser. A whole-device freeze is a different problem; the browser task manager is not a general Chromebook recovery command.

What if the Delete key is the problem?

Finding or remapping the Delete action is separate from opening a task manager. Chromebook keyboard settings allow users to remap certain keys and configure the “6-pack” navigation actions, including Delete. Check Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs for the available controls on your device. Google explains keyboard customization in Use your Chromebook keyboard.

Where can I check shortcuts for my keyboard layout?

Google’s online shortcut instructions specify US customers using a standard English QWERTY keyboard. For an international layout or a key label that differs from the instructions, open the on-device shortcut viewer through Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs > View keyboard shortcuts. Google notes that Search and Launcher labels can vary, and that both work for some shortcuts. The on-device viewer is also available with Ctrl + Search + S. See the scope notes in Google’s shortcut guide.

What should I do if the whole Chromebook is frozen?

Do not treat Powerwash as a Ctrl + Alt + Delete replacement. Google’s factory-reset guidance recommends trying troubleshooting steps first, including disabling extensions one at a time and resetting Chromebook hardware. Powerwash is a factory reset that erases local information.

If other troubleshooting has not resolved the problem and you decide a factory reset is appropriate, Google’s documented sequence is:
