To lock an exchange rate for multi-currency billing, first decide what you are promising: a fixed customer-facing price, a fixed amount in your own currency, or a conversion rate that stays fixed only for a limited quote or payment flow. Those are different policies. The customer’s presentment currency is the amount they see and pay; the merchant’s settlement currency is the currency the merchant receives. If they differ, a payment processor may convert between them, and the customer’s bank may separately charge a foreign-exchange fee.
What does “locking an exchange rate” mean?
The phrase can describe three approaches: setting a price in a particular currency, converting a price into local currency at checkout, or holding a quoted rate for a limited period. They do not provide the same protection. In particular, a conversion rate guaranteed through settlement does not necessarily mean a subscriber will see the same local-currency amount at every renewal.

Keep the three relevant currencies separate
- Payment-method currency: the currency a payment method can process.
- Presentment currency: the currency in which the customer is charged.
- Settlement currency: the currency in which the merchant receives funds.
When presentment and settlement currencies differ, the processor may convert the payment. That conversion is distinct from any exchange fee the customer’s bank may add. Stripe says it can process charges in more than 135 currencies; that figure describes Stripe’s documented capability, not a guarantee that every currency is available for every account, payment method, or flow. See Stripe’s currency documentation.
Which pricing approach fits your promise?
| Approach | Customer price behavior | Merchant FX exposure and fees | Validity and renewal behavior | Operational work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual currency-specific prices | The displayed amount can stay fixed in each currency while you leave the price unchanged. | The merchant is exposed to FX movement between the local price and the amount ultimately received unless prices are revised regularly. | No temporary quote window is described for the price itself; subscription renewals use the configured price. | Maintain and periodically review prices for each currency. |
| Dynamic local conversion | The local amount is calculated using an exchange rate and can move as rates change. | Conversion costs depend on the payment setup. For Stripe Adaptive Pricing, Stripe Support says a 2–4% conversion fee is charged to the customer. | Stripe Support says Adaptive Pricing guarantees a rate through settlement. Its subscription guidance says local prices can vary by billing cycle as rates move. | Explain conversion and recurring-price behavior to customers; confirm current eligibility and terms. |
| Rate-locked quote through the FX Quotes API | A quote can hold a rate for a limited period, rather than establishing a permanent local price. | Stripe’s pricing page lists a transaction fee and an additional rate-locking fee; amounts are localized and depend on merchant country and account. | Stripe’s pricing page states a maximum lock of up to 24 hours. This is not a universal guarantee for every payment flow. | Define quote expiry and what happens if payment is not completed in time; follow current API and account terms. |
Stripe distinguishes these options in its localization overview. Its pricing page provides the up-to-24-hour maximum and localized pricing information. Check the page for your country and account rather than assuming one fee applies everywhere.

Use manual prices when the amount itself is the promise
If a customer must see the same amount in their currency each time, setting a currency-specific price gives you direct control over that listed amount. The trade-off is on the merchant side: exchange rates can move while the listed price remains unchanged, so the amount’s value in your settlement currency may change. You need a process for reviewing and updating those prices.
Use dynamic conversion when local checkout matters more than a fixed amount
Dynamic conversion can show customers a local-currency amount without requiring you to maintain every price manually, but the amount may change as FX rates move. Stripe’s Adaptive Pricing is one specific implementation, not a generic property of all processors. Stripe Support says its rate is guaranteed through settlement and that it charges customers a 2–4% conversion fee. Confirm current eligibility, fee treatment, and product terms for your account before relying on those details. See Stripe’s Adaptive Pricing guidance.

Use a rate-locked quote when a customer needs time to complete a purchase
A quote lock is useful when the customer needs a defined period to accept an offer or finish payment at the quoted rate. Stripe’s pricing page states that FX Quotes API rate locking can last up to 24 hours. Treat that as the maximum shown on that page, not as an automatic promise for every integration or payment. The exact API lifecycle, settlement behavior, expiry handling, and retry semantics are not established by the overview; use the current endpoint reference and account-specific terms when implementing it.
How to design a rate-locked billing flow
Before enabling a quote lock, write down the commercial rules your software must enforce. This makes the displayed amount, payment attempt, and customer promise consistent even when a quote expires or a payment is delayed.

- Choose the quote currency. Decide whether the customer-facing quote is in the presentment currency or another currency, and identify the currency in which your business tracks its price.
- Identify the rate source and timestamp. Record which rate applies and when the quote was generated so your system can associate the displayed amount with the right quote.
- Set the expiry policy. Decide what the customer sees and what they must do if the quote expires before payment completes. Do not silently substitute a new amount if your stated promise was to honor the original quote.
- Define rounding and fee treatment. Specify how amounts are rounded and whether conversion-related costs are included in the displayed amount, charged separately, or borne by the merchant.
- Handle currency units correctly. Stripe documents that API amounts use each currency’s minor unit and that some currencies, including zero-decimal currencies, do not follow a two-decimal assumption. Use currency-aware amount conversion and formatting rather than multiplying every amount by 100. See Stripe’s currency reference.
- Test the expired-quote and incomplete-payment paths. Confirm that your integration’s behavior matches the commercial terms you show the customer, using the current endpoint documentation and your account’s terms.
What changes for subscriptions?
A one-time conversion guarantee should not be described as a promise that every recurring invoice will have an identical local-currency amount. Stripe Support says Adaptive Pricing for subscriptions uses real-time exchange rates for each billing cycle, which can make local prices vary as rates fluctuate. A stability-buffer option is described as gated, so do not assume it is available to every account. Stripe also says a failed-payment retry may use a later rate. Explain whether a subscription amount is fixed in the customer’s currency or recalculated from the integration currency each period, and say how customers will be informed of changes. See Stripe’s subscription Adaptive Pricing guidance.
Refunds and retries also need explicit treatment in your customer promise. For Stripe Adaptive Pricing, Stripe Support says refunds use the rate from the original transaction, while subscription retries can use a later rate. Those statements apply to those Stripe flows; they should not be generalized to other providers or payment products.

Changing a customer’s currency may require more than editing a price
Currency can be constrained by existing billing objects. Stripe says active subscriptions and other billing objects can lock a customer to a currency; changing a subscription’s currency can require canceling and recreating it. Check the customer’s existing billing state before designing a currency migration. See Stripe’s customer currency guidance and its invoice and customer currency guidance.
Decide who bears the conversion cost
Write down the answer separately for the customer and the merchant. A customer can be charged in a local presentment currency while the merchant settles in another currency; a processor’s conversion and the customer’s bank fee are separate potential costs. A fixed local price can shift FX movement onto the merchant, while a dynamic conversion product may charge a fee to the customer. A quote lock can carry a separate rate-locking fee in addition to transaction pricing. State what the customer will pay, what the merchant expects to receive, and which conversion costs could change the result.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every local price “locked.” A static currency-specific price, a temporary quote, and a settlement guarantee are different commitments.
- Promising a fixed subscription amount based on a settlement guarantee. For Stripe Adaptive Pricing subscriptions, local amounts can vary by billing cycle.
- Assuming a fee or duration is universal. Stripe’s rate-lock fee is localized, and the up-to-24-hour period is a stated maximum for the FX Quotes API, not a blanket rule for every payment flow.
- Assuming all currencies have two decimal places. Currency minor units differ; use currency-aware amount handling.
- Changing a subscription’s currency as though it were a simple price edit. Existing subscription and billing objects may constrain the change.
