To load dynamic JavaScript content reliably with Selenium in headless Chrome, configure ChromeOptions with --headless=new, navigate to the page, then use an explicit wait for the specific element or application state your next action needs. Headless mode hides the browser window; it does not mean asynchronous page scripts have finished running.
Run Chrome headlessly with Selenium in Java
This minimal example starts a headless Chrome session, opens a page, waits until a results element is visible, and always closes the browser. Replace the sample URL and selector with ones from your application.
import java.time.Duration;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.ExpectedConditions;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.WebDriverWait;
public class LoadDynamicContent {
public static void main(String[] args) {
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
options.addArguments("--headless=new");
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10));
wait.until(ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(
By.cssSelector("[data-test='results']")));
// Interact with or read the rendered results here.
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
Selenium’s Java wait pattern uses WebDriverWait with a Duration and a condition that is repeatedly evaluated until it succeeds or times out. The ten-second timeout and sample locator are illustrative, not requirements. Choose a stable locator and a timeout appropriate to the application. See Selenium’s Chrome-specific documentation for Chrome configuration and its waiting strategies for wait conditions.
Why page load completion does not mean JavaScript content is ready
With the normal page-load strategy, WebDriver waits for the document’s complete ready state. The eager strategy waits for interactive, while none does not block on a ready state. These settings govern document readiness and navigation behavior; they do not confirm that later JavaScript requests, single-page application updates, or a particular result have completed.

A common failure is calling get() and immediately locating an element that is added only after a client-side request. Selenium may report that the element does not exist yet. An element may also exist in the DOM but remain hidden or disabled. Wait for the condition required by the next operation, rather than treating navigation as proof that the application is ready. Selenium explains this distinction in its waiting-strategies documentation and browser-options documentation.
Choose a wait that matches the next operation
| Approach | What it waits for | When to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explicit wait | A named condition, such as presence, visibility, clickability, or a known value. | Dynamic content or a specific interaction; generally the clearest choice. | Local to the operation and can proceed as soon as the condition succeeds. |
| Implicit wait | Element lookups across the session, up to a configured global timeout; the default is zero. | Only when a global element-location policy is deliberately wanted. | Can make timing hard to reason about when combined with explicit waits. |
| Fixed sleep | Only the passage of a set amount of time. | Rare cases where a fixed pause is itself required, not as a readiness test. | May be too short on a slow response or waste time when the page is ready sooner. |
| Page-load strategy | How navigation blocks in relation to document readiness. | When navigation blocking behavior needs adjustment. | Does not establish that asynchronous application content is ready; pair earlier returns with an explicit wait. |
Use explicit waits for dynamic state
Put the wait immediately before the action or read that depends on the state. For example, wait for visibility before reading text or interacting with a visible result; use a condition for clickability when the next step is a click. Waiting for mere presence is not enough if the element must be visible to interact with.

Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits
Selenium warns: “Do not mix implicit and explicit waits.” A global lookup timeout can interact with condition polling and make total elapsed time unpredictable. Prefer explicit waits for state-specific synchronization and leave the implicit wait at its default of zero unless a deliberate global policy is needed. See Selenium’s guidance.
Do not use sleep as a substitute for readiness
A fixed delay cannot tell whether the needed state has arrived. A short sleep can fail on a slow run; a long one adds avoidable latency on a fast run. A condition-based wait adapts to the response time up to its timeout.

Set up Chrome and verify version compatibility
Selenium’s Chrome documentation shows creating a Java ChromeOptions instance and passing it to ChromeDriver. It identifies --headless=new as a commonly used Chrome argument. Chrome for Developers describes unified Headless and headful modes; from Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the older Headless implementation is available as a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. These details can change, so check the current Chrome Headless documentation if behavior depends on which implementation is running.
Selenium’s Chrome page says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome v75 and later and advises matching the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions. Treat that as compatibility guidance, not a guarantee for every installed combination: browser and driver releases change. If session creation fails, check the installed browser and driver versions against the current Selenium Chrome guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No such element immediately after navigation: The page may have reached document readiness before its JavaScript rendered the target. Add an explicit wait for the target’s presence or visibility, whichever the next step needs.
- Element found but interaction fails: Presence does not establish visibility or clickability. Wait for the corresponding condition before interacting.
- Wait times out: Check whether the locator matches the actual rendered DOM, whether the expected state can occur on that page, and whether a client-side request or application error is preventing it. Increase the timeout only if the state is valid but reasonably takes longer; a longer timeout cannot fix a wrong locator or failed application behavior.
- Timing becomes unexpectedly long or inconsistent: Remove the combination of implicit and explicit waits and use a condition-specific explicit wait.
- Headless session will not start: Verify that Chrome is installed and that ChromeDriver’s major version matches Chrome’s. Check current Selenium and Chrome documentation for compatibility and headless behavior.
- Content differs between headless and visible runs: Confirm the actual Chrome mode and version, and inspect whether the application renders the same state under those conditions. Headless mode alone does not guarantee identical application behavior or complete asynchronous loading.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than drive a browser interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each cleanup step configurable.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does headless Chrome wait for JavaScript automatically?
No. Headless mode controls browser presentation. Use a condition-specific explicit wait for the dynamic state your code needs.
What should I do if the element exists but Selenium cannot click it?
Wait for visibility or clickability rather than presence alone, and confirm the element is in the state your interaction requires.
