Use WOFF2 to reduce font-file transfer size, then split a large Chinese typeface into character subsets and declare each file’s coverage with CSS unicode-range. The browser can request the subsets needed for the page’s text instead of downloading every glyph up front. Efficient results depend on accurate character coverage, requesting only the weights and styles you use, and testing the loading behavior against real Simplified or Traditional Chinese content.
What WOFF2 and unicode-range each do
WOFF2 compresses font data for web delivery. CSS unicode-range describes which Unicode characters a particular font file covers, allowing a browser to select the relevant subset when it renders text. They address different parts of the problem: compression reduces the size of a transferred file, while subsets can avoid transferring glyphs the page does not need.

Chinese fonts often cover extensive character sets, so a single complete font file can be costly to download. Splitting the font into useful subsets can reduce the amount needed for a given page, but the browser still needs every subset required by its content. A range declaration is only a selection hint; it cannot add glyphs that are absent from the file.

Google Fonts and Chrome teams reported historical deployment results in a 2015 post: WOFF2 responses were about 25 percent smaller than WOFF with Zopfli, and unicode-range responses averaged about 20 percent fewer bytes than responses without that optimization. The post also described reductions of more than 40 percent in average downloaded font size from optimizations deployed in 2014, and roughly 50 percent response-size reductions on some large sites using unicode-range. These are observations from Google’s historical deployments, not forecasts for a particular current site. Google Developers Blog: Smaller Fonts with WOFF 2.0 and unicode-range.
Choose hosted delivery or self-hosting
Self-host WOFF2 subsets for direct control
Self-hosting lets you control the font files, CSS declarations, and deployment. It also makes you responsible for choosing licensed assets, keeping the subset files and ranges aligned, and checking coverage when content or design changes. If the project does not need legacy-browser formats, web.dev says WOFF2 can be sufficient. web.dev: Optimize web font loading.
Use a hosted Google Fonts stylesheet for managed selection
The Google Fonts API returns CSS tailored to the browser, which then downloads font files. Its documentation describes browser selection among subsets when unicode-range is supported. This avoids manually serving subset files, though it means relying on the provider’s current family availability and generated CSS. Google Fonts: Getting Started with the Google Fonts API.

For a small, fixed string such as a logo or heading, the API’s text= parameter can request a character-optimized file. It is a poor fit for pages whose text changes frequently or must support arbitrary user content. The API documentation also says its older subset parameter is ignored for clients that support unicode-range; check current API behavior rather than relying on that older endpoint detail. - Choose licensed font assets. Obtain WOFF2 files from a trustworthy source and confirm the license permits web embedding and any redistribution your deployment requires. Inspect the files and their documented character coverage; there is no universally best Chinese font or guaranteed Simplified/Traditional coverage.
- Map each file to its actual characters. Use the subset’s character map or the font supplier’s coverage information to determine the code points it contains. Make ranges cover all required Chinese glyphs, punctuation, Latin text, numerals, and symbols. Do not assume that a broad range means every code point in it is present.
- Declare matching font faces. For each subset, define an
@font-facerule with the same family name, the intended weight and style, a WOFF2 source, a deliberatefont-displayvalue, and aunicode-rangematching that file. Keep the descriptors consistent across subsets so the browser treats them as parts of the same face. - Include only the styles the design uses. Request or serve only needed weights and styles. Extra font variants can add latency and bytes; Google’s CSS API guidance also supports variable-font axis ranges when those are appropriate. Google Fonts CSS API v2.
- Test representative content and browser requests. Check real pages containing Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese if supported, punctuation, Latin text, numbers, and symbols. In browser developer tools, verify which font files are requested, transferred bytes, whether fallback glyphs appear, and how the page renders in target browsers. Revise subsets when actual content exposes a coverage gap.
Example structure
The following illustrates the relationship between two subset files and their ranges; the filenames and ranges are placeholders, not usable coverage definitions. Replace them with the exact files and code points for the selected font.

Do not deploy the comments in place of valid ranges: each descriptor must be valid CSS and accurately correspond to its WOFF2 file. A mismatch can leave text using fallback fonts or prompt the wrong file selection.
Choose font-display and preload deliberately
font-display controls how text behaves while a web font is loading. A value such as swap prioritizes showing text with a fallback face and may later replace it with the web font; optional gives the browser more discretion to keep the fallback. Choose according to the importance of immediate text visibility and the visual cost of a later font change. Google’s CSS API guidance documents display options and their tradeoffs. Preload only a font file that is genuinely needed early, such as a critical face used in initial visible content. A preload can make that resource available sooner, but excessive preloads compete for bandwidth and can harm performance metrics. For a self-hosted cross-origin font preload, include crossorigin; measure the effect rather than assuming it helped. web.dev: Optimize web font loading.

Find the right subset size
Subset design balances request overhead against the bytes in each downloaded slice. A very fine split may save unused glyph data but create more files and requests; a broad split reduces file count but may transfer more unused characters. Language/script-aware groupings are more useful than arbitrary chopping because the characters people need vary across Chinese-language text. Google described constructing CJK subset groupings from language-specific web text patterns. Google Developers Blog: Smaller Fonts with WOFF 2.0 and unicode-range.

Test the design against the site’s actual pages and supported languages. If the site serves both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, confirm each is covered; do not infer full coverage from a font family name or one successful sample string. Browser network requests and visual checks help reveal missing subsets, unexpected downloads, and fallback behavior.
Quick Recap
Validate the final delivery
- Confirm the chosen font license covers the intended web use.
- Check that each WOFF2 file contains the glyphs claimed by its
unicode-range. - Use only the family weights, styles, and variable-font axes the design requires.
- Test text coverage, fallback, requests, and transferred bytes in target browsers with real site content.
- Retest after changing content, font files, CSS ranges, API parameters, or preload behavior.
