You can live stream a wedding on YouTube with a phone, webcam, or encoder, but the reliable setup starts before the ceremony: activate the channel early, choose who can watch, test the actual venue connection, and assign someone to monitor the broadcast. YouTube’s current guidance says first-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to activate, so do not leave setup until the wedding day.
Can you livestream your wedding on YouTube?
Yes, if the channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and the person operating the stream is at least 16. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance, accessed in 2026, requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Activating live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours.

Choose the channel owner and operator early. Ideally, the person running the broadcast is a trusted helper rather than either member of the couple. Check channel verification and live access several days ahead; if YouTube requires activation, complete it before the rehearsal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExtra requirements for streaming from a phone
YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements include at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no recent live-streaming restrictions, and live streaming activated. Channels with 50 to 999 subscribers may have a mobile audience-size limit, and YouTube may set the stream archive to private by default. The help guidance does not specify a fixed viewer cap, so do not plan around a particular number.

Webcam and encoder streams do not use that mobile subscriber threshold, but the channel still needs live streaming enabled and must meet YouTube’s applicable requirements.
Choose the right way to stream the ceremony
YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary; choose based on the venue, the audio you need, the number of camera angles, and the operator’s experience.
| Method | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | A simple, single-phone viewpoint and a channel that meets mobile eligibility rules. | Schedule and set visibility in the YouTube app. Rehearse on the exact phone and connection you will use. |
| Webcam | A straightforward computer-based stream using a webcam and microphone. | Select the intended camera and microphone in YouTube, and test the computer’s connection and framing at the venue. |
| Encoder | External cameras or microphones, multiple angles, audio mixing, or more production control. | Requires an encoder workflow and a capable operator. YouTube recommends setting up well ahead of time and monitoring the broadcast. |
A phone and existing equipment may be enough for a fixed shot. A holder or tripod is optional, not a YouTube requirement; its practical benefit is steadier framing. If you want multiple angles, clean integration with venue sound, or someone dedicated to production, consider asking the venue or a local wedding AV operator what they can provide.

Schedule the stream and choose who can watch
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, then set its visibility before sending the link. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers can choose to receive a reminder.
| Visibility | What it means for guests | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Broadly viewable and discoverable. | Use when you want anyone to be able to find and watch the ceremony. |
| Unlisted | Viewers need the link, but anyone who gets that link can forward it. | Convenient for invited guests when a shareable link is an acceptable level of control. |
| Private | Access is restricted. | Consider this when a forwarded link should not be enough; confirm how each intended guest will be granted access. |
An unlisted link is not password-protected and is not a guest-by-guest invitation gate. You can edit privacy settings in YouTube, but decide the access approach before distributing invitations and test it with a guest who is not signed in to the operator’s account.
Protect the stream key when using an encoder
YouTube’s stream key tells the encoder where to send the video feed. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public messages or share it with guests. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update the encoder before the event.

Rehearse at the venue, not just at home
YouTube recommends an unlisted test stream. Use the intended camera position, phone or computer, microphone or venue audio feed, internet connection, and stream settings. Watch from a second device and check both the picture and sound; then test the guest link from outside the operator’s account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Set up the actual shot. Confirm that the ceremony area is in frame and that faces, officiant, and key moments will not be blocked.
- Check the audio path. Listen on another device for intelligible speech and suitable levels. If taking audio from a venue sound system, have the responsible operator confirm that the encoder receives the intended feed.
- Test the guest experience. Open the stream link on a phone and another device. Verify that the selected privacy setting allows the intended guests to view it.
- Check playback stability. Watch long enough to notice buffering, dropped connections, or audio interruptions. Repeat the test if you change location, equipment, or network.
- For an encoder, verify the preview. Confirm the Live Control Room preview before making the event live. If recording a local archive, check that the file is growing.
For encoder events, YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before the ceremony and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees against venue or equipment failure. YouTube also recommends continuously monitoring audio and video during the stream.
Check upload capacity and the equipment plan
The connection’s upload speed matters because it carries the live feed out of the venue. YouTube recommends outbound bandwidth equal to the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate plus 20%. For example, if the selected stream uses a primary bitrate of 4 Mbps and a backup bitrate of 4 Mbps, the recommendation works out to 9.6 Mbps of outbound capacity. That calculation is a planning example, not a promise that a venue connection will remain stable.

- Run an upload-speed test at the precise location where the camera or computer will be set up. Upload speed can be lower than download speed.
- For computer streams, YouTube recommends Ethernet. If you must use Wi-Fi or mobile data, rehearse on that same connection rather than relying on a venue’s general speed claim.
- Know the fallback: who can move the equipment, switch connections, or tell guests about a delay if the main connection fails?
- Keep the operator’s devices powered and positioned so they can monitor the stream without obstructing guests or the ceremony.
Plan for music and copyright interruptions
YouTube lists copyright strikes on an active stream and matches to another copyrighted live broadcast among reasons it may restrict live-streaming access. Wedding music can involve recorded tracks or performed compositions, and the YouTube guidance does not establish whether a particular couple has the required permissions in a given jurisdiction.
Before the event, ask the venue, DJ or band, and relevant rights holders whether the planned music is permitted in a livestream. Have a music-free fallback ready in case a stream is interrupted. This is practical caution, not legal advice.

Monitor the broadcast and check the replay
Assign a helper who is not getting married to watch the outgoing stream. They can catch a muted microphone, shifted camera, or connection issue while the couple and guests focus on the ceremony. YouTube offers DVR so viewers can pause or rewind during a stream. Its guidance notes that lower latency may increase buffering; for a ceremony, dependable playback may matter more than near-instant chat.

After the ceremony, confirm that the broadcast ended properly, inspect the archive, and check its privacy setting before sharing or leaving it available. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The mobile workflow also creates an archive and lets the creator change its privacy or delete it. Archive controls and availability can change, so check the current YouTube Studio view after the event.
Troubleshooting common wedding livestream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is not available when you try to set up | Channel verification or activation is incomplete, or the channel has a live-streaming restriction. | Check YouTube’s live eligibility and channel status well before the wedding. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
| The mobile app will not let the channel go live | The channel may not meet mobile requirements, including the 50-subscriber threshold. | Check mobile eligibility. If it does not fit, prepare a webcam or encoder workflow instead. |
| Guests cannot open the link | Privacy settings or account access do not match the way the guest is trying to view. | Test the link with an outside account during rehearsal. Recheck whether the event is public, unlisted, or private and adjust access as needed. |
| Guests can hear poorly or not at all | The selected microphone or sound-system feed may be wrong, too distant, or muted. | Listen on a second device during the venue test. Confirm the intended audio source with the venue operator and check levels before the ceremony. |
| Video buffers or disconnects | Upload capacity or wireless coverage may be insufficient or inconsistent. | Test at the camera location, prefer Ethernet for a computer where possible, and rehearse any Wi-Fi or mobile-data fallback on site. |
| The stream is interrupted when music plays | A copyright match or restriction may affect the broadcast. | Confirm livestream permissions in advance, prepare a music-free fallback, and follow any YouTube notice or restriction shown in the account. |
| The replay is missing or not visible to guests | Archive processing, privacy, or current archive controls may affect access. | Check the event in YouTube Studio after it ends, inspect the archive, and set the intended replay privacy before sharing its link. |
