How to Live Stream a Prerecorded Video with AWS Elemental MediaLive

AWS’s walkthrough uses an MP4 in S3, a MediaLive pull input, and HLS output to MediaStore. Here’s the process, what to verify today, and when VOD is a better fit.

To broadcast a prerecorded video as a live-style stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive, the AWS walkthrough uses an MP4 stored in Amazon S3, a MediaLive MP4 pull input, and a MediaLive channel that sends HLS output to AWS Elemental MediaStore. CloudFront can deliver the stream to viewers. This is a specific architecture from an AWS blog post published July 27, 2021—not a guarantee that its console labels, templates, or destination options are unchanged today. Check the AWS walkthrough alongside the current console before implementing it.

What this setup does

Amazon S3 stores the prerecorded MP4. MediaLive reads it as an input and processes it for streaming. The channel sends HLS output to an origin—in the 2021 example, a MediaStore container—and CloudFront is shown as a delivery layer. The walkthrough also describes social-channel output as an option. The exact destination and delivery path depend on where viewers will watch.

This creates a live-style channel from a file; it is not the same as making the file available on demand. The cited walkthrough is a dated example, so confirm service availability and current configuration options for your region before building around it.

What you need before you start

  • A prerecorded MP4 uploaded to an Amazon S3 bucket.
  • An IAM role for the MediaLive channel, as required by the walkthrough’s setup.
  • A destination for the channel output. The example uses an AWS Elemental MediaStore container and shows CloudFront for delivery.
  • An intended viewing path: a live-style stream, a social destination, or a video viewers can start on demand. These are different delivery goals.

The walkthrough’s sample MediaLive input URL is s3ssl://YOUR_INPUT_BUCKET_NAME/CONTENT_OBJECT_KEY.mp4. It is an example format from the 2021 tutorial, not confirmation that every current account or console flow uses identical fields.

How to configure the prerecorded stream

  1. Upload the MP4 to S3

Create or choose an S3 bucket and upload the source video. Record the bucket and object key; you will use them when defining the MediaLive input.

  2. Prepare the output destination

In the AWS example, create an AWS Elemental MediaStore container and a CloudFront distribution. This is the tutorial’s HLS origin-and-delivery pattern; do not assume MediaStore or CloudFront is mandatory for every MediaLive design.

The 2021 article shows an input URL in the form s3ssl://YOUR_INPUT_BUCKET_NAME/CONTENT_OBJECT_KEY.mp4. Replace the sample bucket and key with your object’s values and verify current input requirements in AWS documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Create and configure the channel

The AWS blog illustrates using a “Live Event–HLS” template, a SINGLE_PIPELINE channel, and an HLS destination configured for its MediaStore output. Those are details of that historical example. Template names, available destinations, and console fields may have changed, so validate them against the current MediaLive interface and the architecture you intend to deploy.

Attach the MP4 pull input to the channel, review the input and output configuration, then start the channel using the current MediaLive controls. Confirm that the HLS output is appearing at the configured destination and test the viewer delivery path before announcing the stream.

When on-demand video is a better fit

If viewers should be able to start the video whenever they choose, use a video-on-demand workflow rather than a live-style channel. AWS’s MediaPackage VOD guide describes a separate flow: file-based content in S3, a packaging group and configuration, and an asset with playback endpoints. AWS describes an asset resource as how MediaPackage ingests, packages, and serves VOD content. See AWS’s MediaPackage VOD guide.

MediaPackage is not a required part of the MediaStore example above. AWS also documents a live-to-VOD workflow in which MediaPackage ingests live HLS from an encoder such as MediaLive and extracts a VOD asset; AWS says MediaPackage is not required to deliver the resulting asset. See AWS’s live-to-VOD guide.

MediaPackage v2’s supported-inputs page lists HLS and CMAF for MediaPackage live ingest. Those are MediaPackage input requirements; they should not be mistaken for requirements of the MediaLive MP4 pull input in the older walkthrough. Check the MediaPackage v2 supported-inputs page.

Costs and what to verify

The 2021 AWS article gives historical example costs of $1.63 per hour without its Twitch setup and $2.05 per hour with that setup, for the AWS Ireland Region. It excludes CloudFront data-transfer-out charges based on viewing. These figures are not current prices or a full cost estimate. Check current regional rates for channel runtime and the origin and viewer-delivery services you select; the available AWS guides do not establish a current comparative price for this workflow.

  • Confirm the current MediaLive input, channel, template, and output options in your AWS account and region.
  • Confirm the selected origin and delivery services are available and suitable for your audience.
  • Estimate both processing/runtime and delivery costs, including viewer data transfer where applicable.
  • For a VOD goal, compare the file-based MediaPackage workflow rather than assuming a live channel is necessary.

AWS’s broader MediaLive User Guide explains the roles of upstream sources and downstream systems in a live workflow, but does not establish exact current settings for this prerecorded-file example.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate, simpler cloud option; it is not an AWS MediaLive configuration and streams to YouTube only. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so no home computer or connection needs to stay on. It supports uploaded video as-is up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, then start the free day.
