How to Live Stream 4K HDR Video to YouTube with AWS Elemental Live

A practical Elemental Live guide to YouTube 4K HDR: HLS setup, HEVC Main10 example settings, accurate HDR signaling, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a 4K HDR live stream from AWS Elemental Live to YouTube, configure an Apple HLS output group for YouTube, encode HEVC at 10-bit with HDR signaling that matches your source, and use a YouTube HLS stream key with manual settings turned off. AWS’s worked example uses 3840×2160 at 59.94 fps, 20 Mbps and a two-second GOP; those are example values, not universal YouTube recommendations.

Before configuring Elemental Live

Confirm that the source is genuinely HDR and that your Elemental Live appliance, software version and licenses support the output you need. A 4K picture is not automatically HDR: the video must be 10-bit and carry accurate color metadata. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HEVC, BT.2020 primaries and matrix, and transfer characteristics matching the content—PQ (ST 2084) or HLG. Do not force HDR labels onto SDR footage. See YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Use a camera or other HDR source that records PQ or HLG, then ensure the encoder’s color conversion and metadata describe that source correctly.
  • Check the installed Elemental Live version’s documentation and appliance capabilities. AWS says HDR10 output needs HEVC and a Main10 profile. A 4K appliance-series restriction on AWS’s cited page applies to Dolby Vision output; it should not be assumed to apply to HDR10. See AWS Elemental Live HDR documentation.
  • In YouTube Studio, obtain the current HLS ingest instructions and stream key for the channel. Treat the key as a secret: never publish it, share it, or include it in screenshots.

Configure YouTube HLS ingest

AWS’s 2021 tutorial uses an Apple HLS output group directed to YouTube’s HLS upload endpoint, with the channel’s stream key. Its example destination has a trailing ampersand; use the current endpoint and exact syntax shown by YouTube for your stream rather than relying on an older copied URL. The AWS walkthrough is at AWS Elemental Live: live stream 4K HDR video to YouTube.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create an event and configure its input. In the Elemental Live interface, create a new event and select the HDR-capable input you intend to stream.
  2. Add an Apple HLS output group. Set the destination to YouTube’s current HLS upload endpoint and supply the stream key in the location expected by the installed Elemental Live version. Do not expose the key in logs or public configuration examples.
  3. Set HLS segment behavior. AWS’s example uses a two-second segment length and Basic PUT. YouTube’s HDR HLS requirements specify MPEG-2 transport stream segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, no byte ranges, and no encryption other than HTTPS. Follow the current YouTube requirements if the older AWS tutorial’s labels or syntax differ.
  4. Choose the YouTube stream key configuration. For HDR over HLS, YouTube says to use an HLS stream key and leave “Turn on manual settings” unchecked (the default). Verify the selected key and ingest protocol before starting the event.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current ingest guidance. YouTube’s HLS HDR requirements are documented in its HDR streaming help.

Set the video encoder and HDR color

AWS’s worked 4K60-class example

The AWS tutorial, published April 14, 2021, specifies the following Elemental Live video settings. It is a concrete starting point, not a guarantee that these values suit every source or event.

Setting AWS example
Resolution 3840×2160
Codec and profile HEVC, Main10/main profile
Frame rate 59.940 fps
Bitrate 20,000,000 bits/s (20 Mbps)
GOP duration 2 seconds
B-frames 2
GOP structure Closed GOP; cadence 1
Reference frames 1
Scene changes Scene-change detection enabled as specified in the AWS example
Color correction Enabled; AWS example selects Force HDR10

In Elemental Live, set the video stream’s resolution, codec, frame rate, bitrate and GOP parameters to the values above if they match your source and delivery needs. Enable the color corrector and choose an HDR conversion only when the input’s actual color format and metadata warrant it. The AWS example’s “Force HDR10” step must not be used to make SDR material appear to be valid HDR; preserve or correctly convert the source’s HDR characteristics.

Bitrate and keyframes

The tutorial’s 20 Mbps is AWS’s value for its example, not a universal YouTube target. YouTube publishes bitrate guidance by resolution, frame rate and codec, and the applicable figures can vary with those choices and the localized guidance page. Check YouTube’s current table for HEVC at your exact frame rate before going live. YouTube’s general encoder advice calls for a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; align the encoder’s GOP/keyframe behavior accordingly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the signal and confirm the stream

Start the event, then use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream and that the event is healthy. A successful ingest does not by itself prove that viewers are seeing HDR correctly. YouTube notes that the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so it is not a reliable visual check of HDR appearance. Viewers on supported HDR devices can receive HDR; viewers on non-HDR devices receive an SDR version. See YouTube HDR viewing and streaming information.

  • Check that the encoder is sending HEVC at 10-bit and signaling BT.2020 primaries and matrix plus PQ or HLG consistent with the actual source.
  • Check the stream on an HDR-capable playback device and display, not solely in the Live Control Room preview.
  • Keep the source, encoder output and YouTube stream-key protocol consistent; a 3840×2160 resolution alone does not establish HDR.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not receive the HLS stream Wrong endpoint, stream key, protocol, or outdated URL syntax Copy the current HLS endpoint and key from YouTube Studio. Confirm the HLS output group and POST/PUT behavior; do not rely on an old example URL without checking current instructions.
HLS ingest is rejected or unstable Segments or playlist behavior do not meet YouTube’s HLS rules Use MPEG-2 TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no byte ranges or encryption beyond HTTPS.
Stream arrives but is not identified or displayed as HDR SDR source, incorrect bit depth, incompatible codec, or inaccurate color metadata Verify HEVC, 10-bit, BT.2020 primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG matching the source. Do not force HDR metadata onto SDR material.
Preview colors look like SDR The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors Verify playback on a supported HDR device and display; do not use the preview as the sole HDR check.
Quality is poor or the encoder cannot sustain output Bitrate or frame rate is unsuitable for the source, available bandwidth, or current YouTube guidance Recheck YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. AWS’s 20 Mbps figure is only its documented example.
HDR10 configuration is unavailable or behaves differently Elemental Live version, appliance capability, or license constraints Consult the documentation for the installed version and confirm HDR10/HEVC Main10 capability. Do not infer HDR10 restrictions from AWS’s separate Dolby Vision appliance guidance.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Use footage, music and other material that you own or have permission to stream. A technically valid HDR signal does not grant rights to its content. YouTube’s enforcement and monetization policies can also apply to repeated or reused material; check the current channel and live-stream rules before scheduling a long-running broadcast. For a pre-publication rights review, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a one-time broadcast, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating the Elemental Live workflow continuously. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
