Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse layered access controls—not voice recognition alone—to limit a smart-home assistant. Start by checking who has admin rights, which people and linked apps can reach each device, and whether high-risk actions require extra confirmation. Then review voice, guest, child, and history settings separately: those affect recognition, content, or records, but do not necessarily revoke device-control access.
Start by mapping every way a device can be controlled
Before changing settings, identify the assistant, home app, account, device, and region involved. A lock or camera may be available in more than one app, through a hub, or in an automation. Removing access in one place may leave another control path intact.

Make a list of the apps, household members, hubs, and automations that can reach the devices you want to protect. The steps below use Google Home as a documented example; other platforms use different menus and may offer different safeguards.
Give household members only the access they need
In Google Home, Admins have broad authority: they can add or remove people, devices, and services and manage wider home settings. Members cannot add or remove people or share devices and data with partner services. Admins can separately control Member access to Settings and Activity. Google’s household-role documentation explains the roles and permissions.

Settings permission lets a member access devices—including devices added later—manage device settings, and manage home settings. Activity permission lets them access histories. Without Settings permission, a member still has limited control of devices and services; removing that permission is not the same as making the member unable to control anything.
- Open the Google Home app and go to Settings > Household.
- Select the member whose access you want to change.
- Review the Settings and Activity permissions and change only what that person no longer needs.
Check the current permission description in your app before saving, since available labels and interfaces can change. Consider the effect on each person before removing access to home settings or histories.
Review linked apps and the device types they can reach
A third-party app connected to Google Home is a separate access path. A home manager can grant or revoke an app’s access to members and selected device types. Review which devices the app can reach, whether its access is still necessary, and its privacy policy. Google’s linked-app guidance describes these controls.

Google says third-party apps can request only device types for which they have approval, and sensitive devices such as locks require app certification before an app can request access. That is a Google-specific safeguard; it should not be assumed to apply to every platform or integration.
- In Google Home, open Settings and find the linked-app or partner-services access controls.
- Inspect each connected app’s granted device types and member or home access.
- Revoke grants that are no longer needed, then confirm the app no longer appears as authorized.
Require extra verification for actions that make a device less secure
Check how your assistant handles commands such as unlocking a door, turning off a camera, disabling a security system, or opening a device with a safety concern. Google’s partner policy states: “Google requires partners to enable a secondary user verification for any operation that may change the device state to a non-secure or disabled state, such as unlocking a door, turning off a camera, disabling a security system, or opening a device that may have a safety concern.” This is a requirement for Google partners, not proof that every assistant or integration uses the same safeguard.
Look for the platform’s documented confirmation or verification setting, and check whether it applies to the particular device and integration. Do not assume that a voice profile, phone lock, or confirmation prompt covers every route to the device.

Treat Voice Match and wake-word settings as separate safeguards
Voice Match can tailor experiences for recognized household members, and activation sensitivity can help manage when an assistant responds. These settings are about voice recognition and activation behavior; they do not, by themselves, establish that an unrecognized person is blocked from every device command. Google’s Assistant privacy information describes standby activation detection, activation sensitivity, Digital Wellbeing, and Voice Match.
Google’s current Gemini for Home documentation says people physically present, including unidentified guests, may interact with Gemini for Home devices. Do not treat voice recognition as a substitute for restricting account, app, or device permissions. Google’s Gemini for Home Privacy Hub covers guest interactions and household controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set child and guest filters for content, not as device locks
Google documents filters for sensitive topics that can apply to guests or everyone, and says voice-matched children under 18 receive filtered responses. These filters affect responses; they are not a universal guarantee that children cannot control devices. Check the controls available for your assistant and account, and use permissions or device-level safeguards for access limits.

Choose history settings with their limits in mind
Google says Home History can be turned off or adjusted and activity can be reviewed or deleted. Its Gemini for Home documentation also says activity may still be kept for up to 24 hours when Home History is off to provide the service, maintain safety and security, and process feedback. Turning off history is therefore not the same as disabling the assistant or revoking its device access. Google’s Privacy Hub describes the history and retention controls.
Check local, remote, and shared-platform control paths
With Matter, commands sent from within the home can be carried out locally over Wi-Fi or Thread. When controlling devices while away, Google says commands use cloud service and the Google Home hub to check authorization before the hub sends the command locally. Matter also supports multi-admin, which can make a device available through more than one certified platform. Google’s Matter documentation explains local and remote control and multi-admin.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Matter is an interoperability and control mechanism, not a feature that inherently prevents an assistant from accessing a device. If a device is shared with another certified app or platform, inspect its permissions and automations there too.
Verify each change without testing a risky command
- Reopen the relevant permission or integration screen and confirm the intended access is removed or narrowed.
- Use harmless actions, such as asking the assistant to turn a light on or off, to check the access you intend to keep.
- Review the device list and automations in every app or platform you identified, including any Matter-connected platform.
- For locks, cameras, and security systems, consult the platform’s documentation for its verification behavior rather than testing by issuing an unsafe command.
The exact result depends on your assistant, account, app, hub, region, and device setup. A restriction in one platform’s permission screen does not establish that every other app or automation has lost access.
