How to Limit What an AI Agent Can Access When Ordering Food

A safer AI-assisted food order starts with narrow site and account access, human approval before payment and submission, and a check of the final order.

Give the agent access only to the ordering site and account information needed for this meal, and require your approval before it enters sensitive details or submits the order. Limiting which websites it can reach is not the same as limiting what it can do after it gets there: use separate access, action, and run boundaries, then check the order yourself.

What to limit: access, actions, and the run

OpenAI’s computer-use safety guidance puts the access principle plainly: “Keep access limited to what the task needs.” It recommends using an isolated browser or virtual machine and allowing only necessary sites and actions. These controls narrow the agent’s reach; they do not make an order risk-free or replace your approval of consequential steps. OpenAI’s computer-use safety guidance

  • Access boundary: Which sites, apps, and account data can the agent reach?
  • Action boundary: Which steps require you, especially providing sensitive information or placing the order?
  • Run boundary: How long or how many steps may the agent take, how can you stop it, and how will you verify the outcome?

Keep menu descriptions, reviews, and other page content in the right role: they are information to assess, not instructions that can change your request or grant the agent broader authority. OpenAI’s computer-use safety guidance

Set up a narrowly scoped order

  1. State the task and its limits. Name the permitted ordering site, the meal or items you want, and relevant constraints such as dietary needs, delivery location, or a maximum total. Avoid instructions such as “order whatever looks good,” which leave the agent to make broad choices.
  2. Remove access the task does not need. Disable unused apps and connectors, and avoid exposing unrelated accounts or personal information. ChatGPT agent guidance advises enabling only needed apps and taking care when granting access to sensitive accounts. ChatGPT agent guidance
  3. Constrain the environment, if you configure the runtime. Use an isolated browser or VM where possible, and allowlist the ordering site and necessary actions rather than giving the agent general browsing access. The exact controls depend on the agent and ordering service you use. OpenAI’s computer-use safety guidance
  4. Keep consequential steps behind your approval. Review sensitive information before it is transmitted, and personally approve payment entry and final order submission. A website-origin access approval is not a confirmation requirement for every consequential action; treat those as separate controls. OpenAI computer-use permissions guidance OpenAI’s computer-use safety guidance
  5. Bound the run and make stopping possible. Set an appropriate step, time, or cost limit where the agent supports it. Know how to cancel a run before it starts; do not assume every agent or ordering app provides the same controls. OpenAI’s computer-use safety guidance
  6. Verify the result in the ordering service. Check the restaurant, selected items and options, total, delivery details, and order status yourself. Do not treat the agent’s completion message as proof that the order is correct or that it was placed only once.

What a card spending limit can—and cannot—do

A payment control can be an additional boundary, but it does not restrict what the agent can see or do in a browser or account. A merchant lock or spend limit, where available, is not a substitute for limiting site access and requiring approval before submission.

Check the controls for your specific ordering service

No particular ordering app or AI agent is assumed here. Their permission switches, account integrations, cancellation options, and order-confirmation flows differ. Before a run, check the service’s current settings and make sure you can review and approve the final purchase; if it cannot provide the boundary you need, do not delegate that step.
