You can reduce how social-media activity is used to personalize ads, but no single switch stops every service from collecting or retaining data. Review ad-personalization settings, activity and history controls, and device-level tracking permissions separately; each controls a different part of the picture.
Know what each privacy control changes
Ad targeting involves several distinct data paths. A service may use activity inside its own app, information businesses share with it, or signals from a device. Settings can limit how some of those signals are used without stopping the underlying collection or deleting information already saved.

- Ad personalization: Changes whether eligible activity is used to tailor ads. It generally does not mean ads disappear.
- Activity and history: Controls may affect whether account activity is saved, retained, or used for ads. A setting that excludes history from ad personalization may leave that history stored or available for recommendations.
- Device tracking: An operating-system permission can limit whether one app’s activity is linked with activity from other companies’ apps and websites. Its scope may not include activity within the same company’s services.
Before changing a setting, check which data source it covers, which use it limits, and whether it applies to your account, device, browser, or region. Do not assume an advertising opt-out also deletes data or prevents recommendations.

Reduce Google and YouTube ad personalization
Review Google’s ad controls
While signed in, open Google My Ad Center and review personalized ads. Google also provides separate controls for whether activity on sites and apps, YouTube History, and areas where you have used Google can be used to personalize ads. Turning off the use of activity on sites and apps for ads does not turn off personalized recommendations. Likewise, excluding YouTube History from ad personalization does not necessarily stop that history from being saved to your account or used for recommendations.

If your goal includes reducing stored activity, review your Google account history and deletion controls separately. Changing ad personalization is not the same as deleting account history.
Understand what YouTube ad settings cover
YouTube says ad selection may depend on your Google ad settings, watched content, and account status. Signals can include app and website use, device identifiers, location, age range, gender, and interactions with YouTube ads or videos. YouTube’s advertising help also explains how to manage ad settings and view, pause, or delete watch history. Personalized-ad controls do not remove ads; YouTube describes paid memberships as its ad-free option.

On an Apple device, decide whether YouTube may track across other companies’ apps
If YouTube displays Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt, choosing Ask App Not to Track means activity from that YouTube app will not be linked with activity from non-Google apps and websites for personalized ads and ad measurement. This is not a blanket switch for Google: it does not change how activity from other Google apps and websites may be linked, or how Google uses YouTube and other Google activity under your Google ad-personalization choice. Review Facebook and Instagram controls in Accounts Center
Meta changed its off-Meta activity controls on June 9, 2026. It announced that it is discontinuing the setting called “Your activity off Meta technologies” and expanding “Activity from other businesses,” which governs activity businesses already share with Meta for personalized ads and, going forward, other content. Older guides that direct you to disconnect future activity through the discontinued setting may no longer match the current interface. Open Accounts Center and Ad Preferences, then inspect the control wording shown for your account. Meta’s announcement explains the change.

For U.S. account holders, Meta’s regional privacy notice points to Activity information from ad partners in Ad Preferences and Accounts Center for managing how that information is combined and used for ads. The same notice describes device-maker advertising settings and opt-out platforms from the Digital Advertising Alliance and Network Advertising Initiative for people without Meta accounts. Applicable U.S. laws may also recognize Global Privacy Control (GPC) as a targeted-advertising opt-out signal. Meta says its handling of logged-out GPC signals is limited to the browser in which the signal is received and that it does not recognize other “do not track” signals. These are U.S.-specific details, not a worldwide guarantee; consult the Meta U.S. Regional Privacy Notice for scope.
Check connected accounts and privacy tools
Accounts in the same Accounts Center may use information across those accounts for personalized ads and other experiences. Review the accounts and connected-experience settings there; Meta’s Accounts Center help describes the service. Meta also lists Privacy Checkup, information access, download and deletion, Off-Facebook Activity, and Ads Interests & Preferences among its privacy tools. Because the off-Meta activity control is changing, confirm the current availability and wording in your own account rather than relying on a legacy tool description. What these changes do—and do not—promise
These controls are useful for narrowing how particular activity informs ads, but they differ in scope and are not proof that a platform has stopped all collection. An ad-personalization choice can leave data stored; a history control can affect storage or recommendations differently; and a device permission may cover only links between one app and non-affiliated apps or websites. Availability and behavior can vary by platform, region, sign-in status, and device. There is no established comparative measurement here for the percentage of tracking any one control prevents.
