To set a daily TikTok limit, open Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Screen time > Daily screen time. Choose a suggested limit or set a custom limit for each day. When you reach it, TikTok says it sends a notification and lets you close the app or enter the on-screen passcode to return.
You can set a limit for your own account without Family Pairing. A parent or guardian can use Family Pairing to manage a teen’s limit, including applying one limit across the teen’s devices. The controls are software settings, so you do not need a separate timer, accessory or paid product.

Set a daily screen-time limit in the TikTok app
The main control is in TikTok’s Screen time area. The following path is the quickest way to reach it on a phone or tablet:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top of your profile.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Screen time.
- Tap Daily screen time.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to choose a suggested limit or configure a custom limit for each day.
The setting is a daily amount of TikTok use. A suggested option gives you a ready-made limit, while the custom option lets the amount differ from one day to another. For example, you might choose one amount for work or school days and another for a weekend. The important step is to save or confirm the choices shown in TikTok rather than leaving the setup partway through.

Preset or custom: which should you choose?
Use a suggested limit when you want a simple, consistent target and do not need separate schedules. It is the fewest decisions and is usually the fastest setup. Use a custom limit when your routine changes during the week or when you want to be more restrictive on some days and more flexible on others.
- Suggested limit: one ready-made daily choice with minimal setup.
- Custom limit: separate daily values, allowing different limits for different days.
- Either choice: TikTok says it notifies you when the applicable daily limit is reached.
Neither option should be described as a permanent lockout. The setting establishes a target and a reached-limit prompt; it does not remove the documented option to return by using the on-screen passcode.
Change or turn off the limit
To revise the amount later, return to Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Screen time > Daily screen time. Open the control and edit the suggested or custom schedule. If your routine changes, check each custom day rather than assuming that changing one value changes every day.
Recommended Free Tools
To disable the control, open Daily screen time again and turn the time limit off. Turning it off is different from increasing the limit: disabling removes the daily-limit setting, while editing keeps the feature active with a new target.
Set the limit in a browser
TikTok also documents a browser route. Open TikTok’s profile menu, go to Settings > Screen time > Daily screen time, turn the setting on, and choose a limit or configure a custom limit for each day.
The browser wording is slightly different from the app. In the app, the route begins with Settings and privacy; in the documented browser route, it begins with Settings. Once you reach Screen time, look for the same Daily screen time control and follow the prompts.
A browser setting is useful if you are already signed in on a computer or if the phone interface is inconvenient. It is still the TikTok account setting, not a separate computer-only timer. If you use TikTok in both the app and a browser, the dashboard guidance says usage can include app and web use, so reviewing the account-level setting and usage together gives a fuller picture.

That distinction matters. The documented behavior is a notification plus a choice, not an assertion that a self-managed limit permanently blocks access. If you close the app, you have followed the prompt. If you enter the passcode, TikTok lets you return. Therefore, treat a personal limit as a stopping cue and an accountability tool rather than as an unbreakable technical barrier.
The reached-limit message also explains why a limit may feel different from a device-level parental control. TikTok’s own setting operates inside TikTok and presents the return option described above. It does not claim to lock your entire phone, stop other apps, or make TikTok inaccessible for the rest of the day.
How to make the prompt useful
Choose a limit that reflects the amount of use you actually want, then decide in advance what you will do when the message appears. Closing TikTok immediately follows the documented option. If you choose to continue, recognize that entering the passcode returns you to the app rather than extending the setting invisibly. The limit remains a visible reminder of the target you selected.

Manage a teen’s limit with Family Pairing
Family Pairing is TikTok’s account-linking route for a parent or guardian to manage a teen’s screen-time settings. It is not required for an adult setting a limit on their own account.
- Use TikTok’s Family Pairing controls to link the parent or guardian account with the teen account.
- From the parent or guardian account, set the teen’s daily screen-time limit.
- Decide whether a passcode should be required after the teen reaches the limit before they can return to TikTok.
TikTok says a Family Pairing limit can apply across the teen’s devices. That means the parent-managed setting is not limited to only one phone or tablet used by the teen. The purpose of Family Pairing is centralized management through the linked parent or guardian account.
TikTok also says teens can increase restrictions but cannot lower restrictions set by a parent or guardian. In practical terms, a teen may choose a stricter setting, but the teen cannot reduce a parent-established restriction through their own account. Keep the parent or guardian controls separate from the self-managed workflow: an adult who wants a personal target can use Daily screen time directly, without linking another account.

A parent or guardian can manage the teen’s limit through Family Pairing. If the family wants a different amount, the parent can use the Family Pairing controls to set it. Because the parent-managed limit can apply across the teen’s devices, families should think of it as an account-linked setting rather than configuring each device separately.
Other screen-time tools you can use alongside a limit
TikTok’s Screen time area also lists scheduled screen-time breaks, bedtime reminders, weekly screen-time updates and a screen-time dashboard. They answer different questions from the daily cap:
- Daily screen time: sets a daily target and provides a notification when the target is reached.
- Screen-time breaks: provide scheduled prompts to pause. TikTok’s description presents them as reminders, not as a guaranteed block on opening the app.
- Bedtime reminders: support a chosen bedtime routine with a prompt. The documented description does not say that a bedtime reminder prevents further access.
- Weekly screen-time updates: provide a summary so you can review use over time.
- Screen-time dashboard: shows daily time and the number of TikTok opens. TikTok says the displayed usage includes app and web use.
The standard dashboard described by TikTok allows date filtering for the prior three weeks. That makes it useful for checking whether a new limit is changing your pattern instead of relying on memory. Review the dashboard before adjusting a custom schedule: if one day consistently runs higher, you can decide whether to set a different daily value or keep a uniform target.
Limit versus reminder versus report
A daily limit is the right control when you want a stated amount of use and a notification at the threshold. A break or bedtime reminder is better when you want a prompt at a particular point in your routine. The dashboard and weekly update are for reviewing behavior after it happens. You can use all of them together, but do not treat a report or reminder as proof that TikTok has blocked access.
Common choices and trade-offs
One limit every day or a custom schedule?
A single suggested limit is easier to understand and maintain. A custom schedule takes longer to configure because each day can have its own value, but it reflects routines that are not identical every day. The custom option is the practical choice when you want different weekday and weekend targets.
Self-management or Family Pairing?
Self-management is for the account holder who wants to choose and change their own setting. Family Pairing is for a parent or guardian managing a teen account through a linked account. Family Pairing adds a parent-managed restriction and can apply it across the teen’s devices; it is unnecessary overhead for an adult who is simply setting a personal limit.
Daily limit alone or a group of tools?
The daily limit gives you a clear threshold. Break and bedtime reminders add prompts at other points, and the dashboard shows what happened. If you need a target, start with Daily screen time. Add reminders when the target alone is not enough to interrupt a routine, and use the dashboard when you need to compare actual use with the target.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Assuming the limit is a permanent lock: TikTok documents a notification and an option to close the app or enter the on-screen passcode to return.
- Confusing a custom schedule with one universal value: check each day when you edit a custom limit.
- Using Family Pairing for your own adult account: adults can set their own Daily screen time directly; Family Pairing is the parent-and-teen route.
- Configuring only one teen device: TikTok says a Family Pairing limit can apply across the teen’s devices, so manage the linked account rather than treating each device as an isolated setting.
- Calling reminders enforcement tools: breaks and bedtime reminders are prompts, while the dashboard is a report. The documented descriptions do not establish a hard block.
- Expecting identical menu wording: the app and browser paths use different labels, and wording can vary by language, region or app version.
If the menu labels do not match
TikTok’s official help guidance describes these controls, but the Screen time page surfaced in Spanish and the Family Pairing page in Bulgarian. Menu wording can differ in English and may vary by app version or region.

In the app, look for Screen time inside Settings and privacy, then look for Daily screen time. In a browser, the documented path begins under Settings. If you see a slightly different label, use the setting that clearly identifies Screen time and then Daily screen time rather than assuming a missing word means the feature is unavailable.
If the labels or available controls differ from these paths, check the current settings in your TikTok app or browser. The official descriptions are guidance for the documented interface, not a promise that every account will display identical wording at every moment.

They are described as prompts. TikTok’s guidance does not establish that these reminders prevent you from opening or continuing to use TikTok.
Why do the menu names look different on my device?
TikTok’s app and browser paths use slightly different labels, and wording may vary by language, region or app version. Look for Screen time and then Daily screen time in the current settings interface.
Do I need to buy a timer or another app?
No. The documented TikTok setting is built into the app and browser experience, and no separate physical product is needed.
The Bottom Line
Use Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Screen time > Daily screen time to choose a suggested TikTok limit or create a custom limit for each day. TikTok notifies you at the limit and offers a choice to close the app or enter the on-screen passcode to return. Parents and guardians can manage a teen’s limit through Family Pairing, including across the teen’s devices. Break reminders, bedtime reminders and the dashboard are useful additions, but they are prompts and reporting tools rather than documented permanent blocks.
