Hetzner’s traffic alerts are notifications, not a cap, and its Cloud Firewall is not documented as a bandwidth limiter.
What counts toward Hetzner Cloud traffic?
Hetzner bills Cloud traffic by outgoing volume: incoming and internal traffic are free, while outgoing traffic beyond the included allowance may be billed. Traffic is accounted for by calendar month. See Hetzner’s Cloud billing FAQ and traffic documentation for current account terms and details.

For a stream sent from your server to YouTube, the encoder feed is outgoing traffic. Count any other data the server sends out as well. YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer formats, so viewers watching on YouTube should not be counted as traffic served directly by your Hetzner server unless your setup separately redistributes the feed from that server.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
A useful estimate is:
traffic in bytes ≈ bitrate in bits/second × seconds streamed ÷ 8

For a closer estimate, use the actual number of days in the billing month, which varies from 28 to 31. Allow margin for protocol overhead, audio if it is not included in the bitrate you use, and other outgoing traffic.

Choose a bitrate for your codec and video quality
YouTube’s published settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The examples below are YouTube recommendations, not universal requirements; use the row matching the encoder settings you actually run. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current guidance.

The traffic column is calculated from each bitrate at a steady rate for 30 days, before overhead and other egress. Lowering resolution, frame rate, or bitrate can reduce traffic, but may reduce detail or motion smoothness. Test the result before relying on it for a continuous stream.

Check the allowance for your specific Hetzner server
The included monthly traffic depends on both the server family or plan and its location. Hetzner’s traffic page, last changed 2024-05-21, lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud servers, and 20–60 TB for EU CCX plans depending on plan. The page lists lower, plan-dependent ranges for US and Singapore products. These published allowances may change; verify the current figure for your server before estimating charges.
Hetzner says Cloud server bandwidth is not guaranteed and customers can expect about 300–500 Mbits, with the host connection shared among instances. That provider expectation is distinct from the monthly traffic allowance: a connection rate does not tell you how many bytes are included.

Step-by-step: reduce and monitor outgoing traffic
- Identify the server. Record its Cloud product family, exact plan, and location, then check the current included outgoing traffic for that combination on Hetzner’s traffic page.
- Choose a quality target. Decide the resolution and frame rate your channel needs, and identify the encoder codec. Use YouTube’s matching bitrate recommendation as a starting point rather than applying one bitrate to every format.
- Set and test the encoder. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Test before going live and monitor stream health. Use RTMPS for encrypted stream ingestion where supported by your setup.
- Estimate a full month. Multiply the sustained bitrate by the seconds in the actual billing month, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. Compare the estimate with the included allowance and leave room for overhead and all other server egress.
- Monitor account usage. Check Hetzner’s traffic statistics and configure notifications that will prompt you to investigate rising usage. Treat notifications as alerts, not enforcement.
Does Hetzner stop traffic at the limit?
No. Hetzner’s Cloud billing FAQ says it notifies project owners at 75% and again at 100% of included traffic, but these notifications do not cap or stop usage. Cost alerts likewise help track spending; they are not traffic controls. Check current account terms for any applicable overage billing.

Can you impose a hard outgoing bandwidth cap?
The cited Hetzner Cloud documentation does not describe traffic notifications as a hard stop. Nor does it document Cloud Firewalls as bandwidth shapers or monthly byte caps: firewall rules govern allowed destinations and connections. Do not rely on a firewall rule or a budget notification to enforce a traffic limit. If you require a strict cap, investigate a separately configured server-side traffic-control approach for your own system; a specific implementation is not established here as a Hetzner product feature or verified procedure.
