How to Limit Facebook Without Blocking the Whole Site

Blocking all of Facebook can also block the tasks that make it useful. Learn how to match a limit to the specific features you want to keep and the browsing you want to reduce.

The author behind the account “Why I Stopped Trying to Block Facebook Entirely” describes a familiar trap: blocking Facebook stops distracting feed browsing, but it can also cut off the specific task that brought someone there. Their solution was to focus on limiting the feed rather than shutting out the whole platform. That may suit people who still rely on Facebook features, but it is one person’s approach—not evidence that it works for everyone.

Why blocking all of Facebook became a dead end

In a first-person article published on DEV Community by WebsiteGeek on August 26, 2026, the author says they tried site blockers including StayFocusd, Cold Turkey, Freedom, and BlockSite, then stopped using them. The problem, as they describe it, was that a block meant losing access not only to the feed but also to practical features they still needed.

The author names Marketplace conversations, Groups, and Messenger as examples. In that situation, the block creates a choice between keeping the limit and getting a legitimate task done. If the task wins, the block is disabled—and the feed is available again. The author’s realization was to aim the limit at the part of Facebook they wanted to avoid, rather than treating every feature as equally unwanted.

Start by naming what you still need

Before choosing a blocking method, write down the specific reason you continue to open Facebook. “I need Facebook” is too broad to guide a useful limit. A more precise answer might be a conversation in Marketplace, a Group, or Messenger. Then ask whether the feed is necessary for that task.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • If the task can be completed without browsing the feed, a feed-specific limit may preserve useful access.
  • If Facebook itself is the distraction, a broader block may be a better fit—provided you have another way to handle the tasks you would otherwise do there.
  • If you are unsure, try a reversible, limited change first and notice whether it interferes with something important.

Choose a limit that matches the problem

Approach What it changes What to consider
Hide the feed Targets feed browsing while aiming to leave selected Facebook features accessible. Check which features the tool actually leaves available, which browsers and devices it supports, and whether its current behavior suits your needs.
Schedule focus periods Limits access during chosen times rather than all day. Useful if the unwanted browsing tends to happen at predictable times; make sure the schedule does not block a task you need to complete.
Block Facebook as a whole Prevents access to the site during the block period. Can be too disruptive if you depend on Facebook for a specific function. Plan an alternative or a deliberate exception before turning it on.
Reduce notifications Reduces prompts to open Facebook without necessarily blocking access. May help if notifications trigger visits; it does not prevent opening the feed directly.
Use Facebook only in a browser or remove the phone app Adds friction to casual mobile access while retaining some access through another route. Older users described these tactics in a 2017 Hacker News discussion. They are anecdotes, not current platform instructions or evidence of typical results.

The DEV Community article also describes FocusRamp, a Chrome extension that its author says can hide feeds on Facebook, Instagram, and X while leaving features such as Marketplace, Groups, and Messenger accessible. The article also describes site blocking, scheduled focus mode, and a Pomodoro timer. These are the creator’s claims; current availability, feature behavior, device support, privacy practices, and pricing are not independently established here. Check the extension’s current details before relying on it.

Make the rule sustainable, not merely strict

A limit that repeatedly blocks an essential task may be hard to keep. If that is happening, adjust the boundary rather than assuming you need a stronger block: narrow it to the feed, set a time window, or add friction to the device where browsing is most tempting. Conversely, if selective limits leave the unwanted behavior unchanged, a broader block may be worth trying after you have accounted for the Facebook tasks you still need.

Historical comments in the September 2017 Hacker News discussion describe Facebook as useful for messaging, Groups, events, activism, and keeping in touch with distant friends. Some commenters said browser-only access, fewer notifications, or removing the app felt helpful to them. Those accounts illustrate why a person might want to preserve certain functions, but they do not show how common those needs are or predict what will work for someone today.

A simple decision rule

  1. Name the Facebook task you want to keep.
  2. Identify whether the feed is required to do it.
  3. Choose the least disruptive limit that addresses the browsing you want to reduce.
  4. Check that the rule works on the devices and for the features you actually use.
  5. If the limit keeps blocking a necessary task, revise it; if it does not address the unwanted behavior, consider a stronger boundary.
