How to Limit Backup Bandwidth Without Interrupting Backups

Set a bandwidth limit in the component moving backup data, then verify that jobs still finish on schedule. Available controls vary by gateway, appliance, agent, backup product, and database I/O tool.

You can usually reduce backup-related network congestion without stopping the job by setting a bandwidth or transfer-rate limit in the software, agent, gateway, or appliance that is sending the data. If busy and quiet periods differ, use a schedule with a lower cap during work hours and a higher one outside them. The right setting depends on whether the bottleneck is a cloud upload, appliance replication, endpoint transfer, or local storage I/O.

Choose the throttle for the resource causing the slowdown

First identify which part of the backup path is competing with other work. A cap on one stage does not necessarily control another.

Where contention occurs Control to look for What it limits
Gateway uploading to cloud backup A gateway upload bandwidth or rate-limit schedule Upload throughput from that gateway to the backup service
Replication between backup appliances An appliance replication bandwidth throttle or schedule Replication traffic for the documented appliance process
Endpoint sending data to a target An agent transfer or bandwidth-consumption limit Transfer from that agent computer to its target
Backup source-to-target network path A backup product’s network rule or traffic limit Transfer speed for tasks covered by that rule
Database host storage workload A backup I/O throttle Local backup read/write processing, not necessarily WAN traffic

Use the setting for the installed product and version, and verify its scope and direction. Multiple components or rules may apply caps at different points.

Set a limit that preserves the backup window

  1. Locate the bottleneck. Determine whether the concern is internet upload, appliance-to-appliance replication, endpoint-to-target transfer, or local disk I/O.
  2. Find the product’s throttle. Look for bandwidth, network traffic, upload rate, replication throttle, or backup I/O controls in the relevant console, agent, appliance, or command-line documentation.
  3. Choose constant or scheduled limits. If contention varies over the day, set a lower busy-period cap and a higher quiet-period cap. Check that the schedule covers the intended weekdays and weekends without accidental gaps or overlaps.
  4. Check units and timing. Mbps and MB/s are different units. Confirm whether the value controls network transfer or local processing, and whether schedule times use UTC or local time.
  5. Observe both the backup and competing workload. Check actual throughput, duration, retries, missed windows, and the performance of the service users are trying to protect from congestion.
  6. Adjust gradually. Lower the cap if contention remains troublesome; raise it if jobs no longer finish within the required window. Do not assume one rate suits every connection or workload.

A throttle makes a backup slower; it does not guarantee that the job will finish before the next run or within a recovery-point objective. The workable cap is the one that reduces contention while still allowing the scheduled backup to complete.

Platform-specific controls

AWS Backup Gateway: schedule the upload rate

AWS Backup Gateway’s bandwidth rate limit controls upload throughput from the gateway to AWS Backup. AWS says a gateway has no rate limit by default. Administrators can configure a schedule in the console or with PutBandwidthRateLimitSchedule; the documented schedule supports up to 20 intervals, and schedule times shown in the console are UTC. See AWS Backup Gateway bandwidth throttling and the PutBandwidthRateLimitSchedule API reference.

AWS describes the limiter this way: “Bandwidth rate limiting works by balancing the throughput of all data being uploaded, averaged over each second.” It is therefore an average, not an exact instantaneous ceiling; very brief microsecond- or millisecond-scale crossings can occur. The guide also specifies interval boundaries: an interval ends at the end of its ending minute. For adjacent intervals changing at an hour without a gap, use 59 as the previous interval’s ending minute and 00 as the next interval’s starting minute.

Google Cloud Backup and DR: throttle StreamSnap replication

Google Cloud Backup and DR documents a StreamSnap setting for limiting bandwidth between backup/recovery appliances. It supports a constant value or scheduled triggers for different days and times, including separate weekday and weekend schedules. This setting applies to the documented appliance replication process; it should not be treated as a universal limit for every backup transfer in Google Cloud. See Google Cloud’s replication bandwidth throttling documentation.

Azure backup: distinguish work and nonwork hours

Microsoft documents bandwidth throttling for backup operations, with configurable work days and hours and different work-hour and nonwork-hour limits. Its example uses Set-OBMachineSetting to define Monday and Tuesday as work days and set separate limits for those periods. Confirm that the instructions apply to the Azure backup agent or service you use before applying them. The Microsoft Learn page was last updated January 15, 2026: Manage and monitor Azure Backup.

Veeam: check whether the rule is for the server or agent

Veeam Backup & Replication network rules can cap transfer speed from source to target to reduce the impact of backup tasks on network performance. Veeam’s Windows agent guide separately documents a bandwidth-consumption limit for transfer from the agent computer to its target. These are product-specific controls, so check which product and transfer the rule covers and whether another rule or agent also imposes a limit. See Veeam network traffic rules and Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows bandwidth limit.

Percona XtraBackup: limit local backup I/O, not generic network traffic

Percona XtraBackup’s --throttle option limits backup read/write processing in chunks of 10 MB per second. Percona’s documented examples are approximately 10 MB/s with --throttle=1 and 100 MB/s with --throttle=10. These values describe that tool’s local backup processing, not a general WAN upload cap. Percona warns that on a write-heavy system, an overly strict limit can allow redo log generation to overtake the backup. Monitor database workload and redo-log behavior when using it. See Percona XtraBackup throttling.

Validate the result before relying on the schedule

  • Confirm the rate applies to the intended traffic direction and transfer stage.
  • Check whether the product uses a constant cap, scheduled intervals, or work/nonwork hours, and verify the time zone and interval boundaries.
  • Measure actual throughput and job duration after the change; an average limit may not behave like a moment-by-moment ceiling.
  • Watch for retries, incomplete jobs, or backups that overlap the next run.
  • For local database I/O throttling, assess storage and database-specific effects rather than assuming network performance has changed.

There is no universal Mbps value established for backup throttling. Start conservatively, then tune against the actual workload and the required backup completion window.
