If Hulu looks too dark, the fix almost always lives in your TV’s or streaming device’s picture settings, not inside the Hulu app. Hulu’s help material does not describe a universal in-app brightness slider, so start with the display itself. The steps below use Roku TV as the worked example, because it is the platform with the most documented detail. Menu names differ across brands and models, so treat the Roku path as a model for where to look rather than a universal set of labels.
Start with the picture controls on your device
Hulu plays video through whatever screen you are using, so the brightness of the image is set by that screen. On most smart TVs and streaming boxes, the controls sit in a picture or display menu that you can usually reach while a show is playing. Exact paths vary by manufacturer, and some devices (including Apple TV, phones, tablets, and Samsung or LG sets) are not covered by the Roku instructions below. For those, check your device maker’s manual for its picture settings.

Lighten a Hulu picture on Roku TV
Roku’s official picture-mode guidance, updated February 24, 2026 for Roku Support Australia, documents the following route. Your menu may look slightly different depending on your Roku TV model and the source you are watching.
- Start playing a Hulu show or movie.
- Press the Star button on your Roku remote to open the TV settings menu.
- Select Picture Settings.
- Choose Picture Mode and pick a preset. Roku describes Standard for everyday viewing in moderate-to-bright rooms, Vivid for rooms with a lot of light, and Movie for darker rooms.
- If the preset is still not bright enough, select Customize picture and adjust Backlight.
- Reassess the image before changing anything else.
Roku’s TV guide notes that some streaming channels may assign the Star button a different function. If Star does not open the menu while Hulu is playing, open the settings from another channel or from the Roku home screen, then return to Hulu.

Backlight and Brightness do different jobs
Roku’s two most useful controls are easy to confuse, and changing the wrong one makes the picture look worse rather than brighter. The table summarizes what each control changes according to Roku’s definitions.

Roku states that the TV brightness setting applies across all inputs, while changes to picture mode can be saved per input and mode. Make small adjustments, because a large jump in Backlight can wash out colors or make the picture harder to watch in a dim room.

HDR content and other advanced controls
Some Roku TVs have separate HDR picture modes for HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. Roku lists Dark, Normal, and Bright for these formats. When HDR10 or Dolby Vision content is no longer detected, your HDR-enabled TV automatically switches back to the previously selected picture mode (Roku Support Australia, official support article updated February 24, 2026). If a Hulu title looks darker than others, check whether it is HDR and whether the HDR mode you chose is the one you want. HDR is not, by itself, a diagnosis of a dark picture.

If the controls are missing or Hulu behaves oddly
If you cannot find the picture controls, or the Hulu app behaves unexpectedly, Hulu recommends checking for updates to the Hulu app and to your device’s software. Update steps differ by device, and Hulu’s guidance is general. An update may resolve an app or compatibility issue, but Hulu’s material does not present it as a fix for dim picture.
- Confirm the Hulu app is current in your device’s app store.
- Check the device’s system software for an update.
- Restart the device after updating, then reopen Hulu and check the picture mode again.
- If the controls are still unavailable, consult your TV or device manual, since model support varies.
Other things worth checking
A picture that looks dim is not always a settings problem. Glare from windows, a light-colored wall behind the screen, and content that is intentionally dark can all make a show look darker than expected. Adjusting the room lighting or moving the TV away from direct sun can have more effect than any setting change. Brightness controls can also be set differently for each input, so confirm you are changing the setting for the input you are actually using.

Recommended approach
Begin with the picture mode that fits your room, raise Backlight in small steps if the image still needs more light, and use Brightness only to restore shadow detail in dark scenes. Keep these controls apart and check each change on a dark scene and a bright one before moving on.
