To get an even first layer, level or probe the bed using your printer’s own calibration routine, then set the Z offset so the nozzle lays down a continuous, slightly flattened line. Bed leveling compensates for the bed’s angle or surface variation; Z offset sets the nozzle’s first-layer height. One cannot substitute for the other, and the correct menu, adjustment direction, and procedure depend on the printer model.
Bed leveling and Z offset solve different problems
“Leveling” an FDM printer bed usually means tramming the bed or measuring its surface at several points. A printer may use manual adjustment, a probe-generated mesh, or another supported correction method to account for differences across the build plate. Mesh leveling compensates for surface variation during printing; it does not set the correct overall distance between nozzle and print surface.

The Z offset, also called first-layer calibration or Live Z on some printers, determines that nozzle-to-surface gap. A good mesh with an incorrect Z offset can still produce a first layer that will not stick—or a nozzle that presses too hard into the surface.
Before you calibrate
- Identify the exact printer model and build surface. Menu names, probe behavior, adjustment direction, and whether calibration is automatic vary by model.
- Clean the print surface before tuning. Dirt or grease can cause adhesion trouble even when nozzle height is right.
- Read the printer’s manual for its calibration command and any required warm-up or probing steps. There is no universal temperature or menu path.
- If the printer’s instructions call for mechanical tramming or bed probing, complete that routine before adjusting the first-layer height.
Level the bed, then set the Z offset
1. Run the printer’s bed calibration
Use the bed-tramming or probing procedure documented for your model. A probe-based mesh samples multiple points and lets the printer compensate for variation across the surface. It is not a reason to skip first-layer calibration.

For example, Prusa Research says the MK3/MK3S/MK3S+ XYZ calibration performs a “full 9 point mesh bed leveling.” That is a model-family procedure, not a universal FDM printer requirement. Prusa’s instructions also warn: “The paper is just an indicator, not protection!!!” During that calibration, do not treat paper as a shield against the nozzle or leave the process unattended; the heatbed can be scratched. Follow your own printer’s safety instructions.
2. Print the built-in first-layer test
Use the test or calibration flow specified in your printer’s manual. If it supports a single-layer pattern, watch the deposited lines as they print. In Prusa’s Live Adjust Z procedure, the adjustment is made while the test line is printing; other printers may calibrate automatically or use a different flow.

- 【Wide Application】This Creality cr touch auto-leveling kit is equipped with 3 mounting brackets and is only suitable for the following 3D printers with V4.4.2/V4.2.7 motherboards (Ender 3/Ender 3 Pro/Ender 3 V2/Ender 5/Ender 5 Pro/cr 10), other machines are not compatible. Please confirm your machine and motherboard version before purchasing.
- 【About Reflash the Firmware】1. Download the corresponding firmware from the Creality official website. 2. copy it to the SD card. 3. Rename it to 123.bin, 4. Insert the SD card into the printer, 5. When the power is on, the cr touch firmware will be updated. (Note: Check your motherboard version and download the correct CR touch firmware).
- 【Independent research and development Stable function】CR Touch is a Creality 3D research institute self-developed 3D printer platform leveling solution based on hundreds of millions of user data used by the creators. Compared with the traditional automatic leveling , it is compatible with more 3D printer platforms, more stable and cose-effective. With stable quality and long service life, it can be reused for more than 100,000 times.
- 【Multi-point detection Smart compensation】CR Touch performs multi-point detaction on the printing platform and records the heigh of each detaction point. The system builds a virtual plane based on the height of each point and calculates the tilt angle between the nozzle and the platform to automatically compensates for different points.
- 【Strong compatibility】Creality CR Touch auto leveling kit Compatible with PEI / sticker / glass / metal platform.
3. Adjust in small steps and judge the line
Use the direction shown by your printer’s interface or manual; do not copy another printer’s offset number. In the cited Prusa Live Adjust Z workflow, moving to a more-negative value brings the nozzle closer to the bed, while moving toward zero takes it farther away. Prusa notes that the exact position can vary and advises using the printer’s assembly manual to establish a rough distance.
Look at how the filament sits on the surface:
- Nozzle too far from the bed: Adjacent lines have gaps, or the filament looks rounded rather than gently flattened.
- Nozzle too close to the bed: The line is fully flattened, has ridges or curls at its edges, or the filament is spread extremely thin.
- Target: Lines join continuously and are slightly flattened, with no gaps or ridges.
Make small corrections until the line meets that target. Stop rather than continuing to lower the nozzle if the line is already evenly formed.

4. Check the result across the plate
If the line looks right in one area but changes across the plate, check that the sheet is seated correctly and clean. Re-run the printer’s supported mesh or side-to-side correction after establishing a sound baseline. Where the printer supports bed-level correction, use its small increments; a large global Z change cannot correct a bed that varies from side to side.
If the first layer is not sticking
Adhesion is not proof that the nozzle needs to move closer. If the line is continuous and evenly flattened but still lifts or fails to stick, check other likely causes before changing Z:

- Clean the build surface; grease or dirt can defeat adhesion.
- Review the print settings recommended for your printer, filament, and surface.
- Confirm bed or XYZ calibration was completed as required by the printer.
- Investigate possible under-extrusion if the deposited line is inconsistent or incomplete.
Driving the nozzle excessively close to solve an adhesion problem can interfere with extrusion and may cause a clog. Use the visible first-layer pattern, not adhesion alone, to decide whether the height is correct.

When to recalibrate
Recheck first-layer calibration after a change that can alter the nozzle-to-surface relationship. Prusa recommends recalibrating after a major assembly change, nozzle change, extruder or axis update, or moving the printer. If you use different build sheets, their thickness can change the required Live Z setting; supported Prusa models may let you keep separate Live Z profiles for different sheets.
