Customers can create support tickets from live chat in different ways: a platform may create one automatically after a chat, create one when a customer asks for an agent, or let an agent convert the conversation or send a ticket form. The exact behavior depends on the product and channel version. In Intercom, an agent can convert an Inbox conversation or send a form; in Zendesk, legacy Chat and newer messaging follow different ticket-creation rules.
First identify the chat channel you use
Before changing settings, establish whether your team uses Zendesk legacy Chat, Zendesk messaging, Intercom Inbox, or another support inbox. “Live chat” can describe different channel implementations, and the event that creates a ticket is not the same in each one.

| Workflow | What starts ticket creation | Who supplies ticket details | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Inbox conversion | An agent converts an open conversation | The agent fills in ticket attributes and state | A Customer ticket type is configured; the resulting ticket is visible alongside conversation replies and internal notes |
| Intercom ticket form | The customer submits a form sent in the conversation | The customer provides the requested information | The form asks for the details needed to work the issue |
| Zendesk legacy Chat with Support | The chat session ends, subject to account setup and eligibility | The ticket is created from the chat; assignment depends on the Chat + Support setting | Ticket creation is enabled, the chat has ended, and the requester and ticket are eligible |
| Zendesk messaging | The customer requests a live agent | The conversation becomes a ticket handled through messaging routing | Ticket triggers and chat routing rules direct the work appropriately |
These distinctions matter operationally: a customer who expects every chat to become a ticket may be disappointed if the workflow only creates one after a request for an agent or an agent’s manual conversion. Zendesk’s documentation also distinguishes legacy Chat from messaging; its legacy Chat guidance should not be applied to a messaging conversation.

Intercom: convert an Inbox conversation into a ticket
Intercom supports an agent-led workflow in which an existing Inbox conversation is converted into a Customer ticket. Configure the relevant ticket type before using this workflow: only Customer ticket types appear in the described conversion process. Intercom also distinguishes Customer tickets from Back-office and Tracker tickets, so select the category that matches the work rather than treating all ticket types as interchangeable.

- Configure ticket types first. In Intercom, set up the Customer ticket type your team needs. Define the attributes agents should complete so the ticket contains useful information for whoever handles it.
- Open the customer’s conversation. Go to the relevant conversation in Inbox and confirm it is the interaction you intend to track as ticket work.
- Start the conversion. Select the ticket control in the conversation header, then choose the appropriate Customer ticket type.
- Complete the ticket details. Fill in the requested ticket attributes and choose the initial state. The details entered here provide structured information for follow-up.
- Confirm the result in the conversation. Check that the ticket is visible alongside the conversation’s replies and internal notes, so agents can continue working with the interaction context.
Conversion preserves the conversation context, but it has a reporting consequence: Intercom counts a converted item in both conversation reporting and ticket reporting. Account for that overlap when interpreting those totals.
Intercom: let the customer submit a ticket form
If customers should provide structured details themselves, send a ticket form in the conversation instead of relying on an agent to fill out all ticket attributes during conversion. This approach is useful when the team needs consistent information before it investigates an issue.
- Choose form fields that collect the details needed to route and investigate the request.
- Use the form workflow when the customer should supply those details, rather than asking an agent to infer or re-enter them.
- Intercom also documents workflows for sending forms and API-based ticket creation for embedded or system-generated use cases. The API is an implementation option for teams building an integration, not a step in the manual Inbox conversion flow.
Decide which experience fits the request: agent conversion gives the agent control over ticket attributes and initial state; a customer-completed form puts structured information gathering in the customer’s hands.

Zendesk legacy Chat: create and assign Support tickets
Zendesk’s legacy Chat guidance describes Support tickets being created after a Chat session. This is distinct from Zendesk messaging, where the documented trigger is a customer asking for a live agent. In a Chat + Support account, an administrator can configure a Support agent as the assignee for tickets created from chats. Without that setting, those tickets are unassigned.
- Confirm that the account uses legacy Chat with Support. Do not use this procedure as a description of messaging behavior.
- Check that ticket creation is enabled. If creation is disabled, ending a chat will not produce the expected Support ticket.
- Set an assignee for chat-created tickets if needed. In Chat + Support, configure a Support agent as the assignee so new chat tickets have an owner. If no assignee is set, expect tickets to be unassigned.
- End the chat session. Zendesk’s legacy Chat workflow creates the Support ticket after the chat session, rather than at the messaging “request a live agent” event.
- Check the resulting Support ticket. Confirm that it exists and has the intended ownership before relying on it for follow-up.
If a customer should not need to wait for a session to end before a request becomes trackable, determine whether the account’s messaging workflow or another supported process better matches that requirement. Do not assume the legacy Chat trigger applies to all Zendesk channels.
Zendesk messaging: route tickets created when a customer requests an agent
Zendesk’s messaging documentation describes ticket creation when the customer requests a live agent. After creation, ticket triggers and chat routing rules can be used to route the work. Configure and validate those controls as part of the customer-to-agent handoff; creating a ticket without a routing plan can leave ownership unclear.

- Confirm the messaging setup. Make sure the customer channel is Zendesk messaging, rather than legacy Chat, before applying messaging-specific behavior.
- Define the handoff expectation. Tell customers how to request a live agent if that action is what creates the ticket in your messaging workflow.
- Configure ticket triggers and chat routing rules. Use the relevant Zendesk controls to direct messaging tickets and conversations to the intended team or agent.
- Validate the handoff. In a representative customer interaction, confirm that requesting an agent creates the ticket and that routing sends it to the intended destination.
Zendesk has described migration from legacy Chat to messaging for legacy Chat users. Because the two modes have different ticket behavior, verify the account’s channel version and follow the corresponding Zendesk setup guidance before changing a production workflow.
Troubleshoot a missing Zendesk legacy Chat ticket
For legacy Chat, Zendesk identifies several reasons a Support ticket may not appear. Check them in this order:
- Ticket creation is disabled. Confirm the account’s Chat ticket-creation setting is enabled.
- The end user has not ended the chat. The documented legacy workflow creates the ticket after the chat session; an ongoing session may not yet have produced one.
- The end user is suspended in Support. Zendesk lists a suspended requester as a reason a Support ticket may not be created.
- The ticket is already closed. Closed tickets cannot receive additional chat transcripts, so do not expect a later transcript to be added to a closed ticket.
Zendesk’s legacy guidance also describes exporting a transcript from Chat History and entering the support address to create a Support ticket from the chat. Treat this as a legacy Chat recovery path, not as instructions for Zendesk messaging, and confirm the account version before using it.

Choose the customer-to-ticket workflow that fits
Use the creation trigger and the person responsible for supplying details to decide how tickets should enter your support process. The setup should also make ownership and visibility clear.
- Use agent conversion when an agent should decide which conversation merits ticket tracking and complete the ticket attributes and initial state.
- Use a customer form when the customer should provide structured issue details in the conversation.
- Use legacy Chat’s session-based flow when the Zendesk account is on legacy Chat and the team wants the documented post-session Support ticket behavior.
- Use messaging’s agent-request flow when the Zendesk workflow is messaging and ticket creation should follow the customer’s request for a live agent.
- Set routing or assignment deliberately. A ticket is only operationally useful when the right team can find and own it.
Before you launch the workflow
- Identify the actual product and channel mode: Intercom Inbox, Zendesk legacy Chat, or Zendesk messaging.
- Choose the creation event: agent conversion, customer form submission, session completion, or a request for a live agent.
- Specify the information required on the ticket and who supplies it.
- Configure assignment or routing so ticket work reaches an owner.
- Verify that the created ticket is visible where agents expect it and, for Intercom conversion, account for its inclusion in both conversation and ticket reporting.
These platform behaviors reflect the vendor guidance available on October 4, 2026; account interfaces and channel availability can change, so use the current instructions for the specific account and channel when implementing the workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every live chat automatically become a support ticket?
