When Avast blocks something, first identify what was blocked: a website, an app’s internet connection, or access to browser data. The right fix depends on the Avast feature making the decision. Update Avast and your browser before changing a rule, and avoid switching off protection just to make an alert disappear.
What is Avast blocking?
Check the alert text and the Avast product you use. A website warning such as “Threat secured,” “Infected website,” or “Malicious URL blocked” points to web protection. A program that cannot connect may be governed by Firewall. Other browser features can block ads or trackers, or control access to saved passwords and cookies.

Names and availability vary by product, edition, operating system, and interface version. Avast Secure Browser, Avast One, Free Antivirus, and Premium Security do not necessarily expose identical controls. Find the feature named in your alert before following a procedure.

Update first
Update Avast and your browser, then try the site again. A detection can be a security decision rather than a connection fault. If Avast still flags a site you believe is safe, report it to Avast for false-positive review using its support process. Avast Support says confirmed false positives are typically addressed through automatic virus-definition updates within a few hours; that is its stated typical handling, not a guarantee for an individual report.

Use an exception only when justified
Avast lists adding a website URL to exceptions as an optional troubleshooting action. An exception bypasses scanning or blocking for the specified site. Familiarity alone does not prove a site is safe, so use this only when you have a sound reason to trust it, and keep the exception limited to the necessary URL rather than weakening broader protection.
Diagnose slow loading without an alert
If pages load slowly but Avast shows no malware warning, Avast’s website-access troubleshooting guidance suggests temporarily turning off Web Guard as a diagnostic check, then restarting the browser. This is a test, not a recommended permanent setting: turn Web Guard back on after the check unless the applicable Avast guidance for your specific issue says otherwise. If the slowdown continues, follow Avast’s further browser-repair troubleshooting rather than leaving protection disabled.

Allow a trusted app through Avast Firewall on Windows
Use this route only when an app cannot reach the internet and Firewall appears to be the blocking layer. The exact labels can differ by Avast edition and UI version.
- Open Avast and go to Protection > Firewall.
- Open Apps and locate the affected application. Inspect its status and rules before changing anything.
- If the app is blocked and you trust it, use its control to Unblock or allow the required connection. Avast Firewall also documents Ask me Mode, which prompts for a decision when an app tries to connect.
- Test the app, then review the rule if it still cannot connect. Allow only the access it needs; do not create broad network permissions as a workaround.
Avast says it normally creates optimal application rules without user input, so manual changes are usually unnecessary. Its Firewall guidance distinguishes trusted private networks from untrusted public networks: only mark a network trusted when you know and trust it. Avoid changing packet-level network rules unless you understand the effect; Avast cautions that manual rule changes are normally not needed.

If the block concerns browser data or ads
A password- or cookie-access prompt is not the same as a Firewall block. Browser Shield controls browser-data access in supported Premium Security configurations; ad blocking is a separate browser feature. Check the relevant browser or Avast feature settings rather than allowing an app through Firewall or adding a website exception. Feature names, settings, and availability vary by product and edition.

- Avast identifies a suspected malicious site and you cannot verify it is safe.
- You are unsure whether a Firewall prompt concerns a legitimate app or an unexpected process.
- The proposed fix would disable protection broadly when a narrow, documented rule or false-positive review is available.
When in doubt, keep the default protection enabled and consult Avast Support with the warning text, product name, operating system, and the app or site involved. Those details help distinguish a detection from a connectivity issue.
